CIJ Geddy Lee sig for me please! I stupidly sold one and have been trying to find another bass as good for a while now... I think J basses are very personal. They may all look (and too a certain degree sound) the same, but they feel so different. Or they do to me, anyway. I've played loads and owned quite a few now - but the only one that didn't have an issue of some description was the Jap GL.

To be fair, although SC is an awesome player, a lot of his music is very ordinary. I can quite understand how someone (even a bass player!) could have avoided him for many years.... At his best, he is an incredible composer as well as being a monster player. But his back catalogue contains some absolute dross too (IMO of course!)

Not me. I am quite heavy-handed so I need to give the strings room to breathe... That's not to say that I set my action deliberately [b][i]high[/i][/b], just not so low that the strings rattle and buzz against the frets.

On the other hand, I think that good bands usually have a genuine rapport between the members. That usually aids meaningful communication. Did you have good comms with your band mates before this situation arose, or was it always a bit crap?

Sourcing some IMS (Industrial Methylated Spirit or "alcohol") can be a pain, but once you have it all you need to do is coil the strings up according to the size of your vessel (I use an old "Vitalite" margarine tub), pop them in and pour the liquid over them. Leave them for a few hours, giving them the odd swirl, then take them out and drain the alcohol off. No need to even dry them!
