1. I was thinking the same but using one of those metal brushes that look like a big tooth brush. You're right not to use steel wool - that stuff goes everywhere.
2. I'm in the exactly the same boat right now so I'm looking forward to the replies. I have a Korg pedal tuner, Boss OC-2, a DI box and may get another pedal in the future like a flanger or similar. The main reason I would like a powered board if possible is simply to have everything permanently connected and neat & tidy. It's just a mass of cables at present
3.
recently picked up an original (76 I think) Gibson Grabber for £180.
I bought a copy of one of these for £60 & sold it to a guy in the US for £150 I went through a phase of finding bargains & selling them on quickly: Rickenbacker 4003 - bought for £600 - sold week later for £970 Squier JV Precision - bought for £200 - sold for £400 Left handed stingray 5 - bought from Denmark, including shipping for £550 - sold for £850 plus shipping Thumb NT5 - bought for £600, sold week later for £1000 cash. I still have a weekly look in my local Crack Generator but have yet to find something
4.
I heard the rest of the story about the strings on the bass. Apparently when Bernard died, his stingray was passed onto John Taylor from Duran Duran, including the original strings. During one Duran Duran recording session a guitar tech swapped all the strings on it and chucked them out as"they looked old"
Not only did he take then off, he apparently cut them to get them off.
5. I love precisions and more specifically, single coil ones although I like the 'normal' ones too. Conversely, jazz basses are the antichrist. I don't know why, it could be all the Jaco or Marcus Miller worship (especially on Talkbss), I just really hate the way they look.
6. The Sister Sledge story goes something like - Nile & Bernard went to their record company and asked who was the act that was performing the worst. They figured that they could make Sister Sledge sucessful. The sugarhill gang incident was particularly funny - as everyone knows, the sugarhill gang ripped off 'good times' without getting permission to use it in their song 'rappers delight'. NIle & Bernard threatened legal action so a couple of the Gang's entourage came round with guns and advised them against it. They didn't know that Chic's lawyers were friendly with the Mafia and the end result was the same 2 guys coming back with a suitcase full of money
7. I've just had the neck off and it ain't any clearer. The code on both neck and body is "PB 562". I can't see an actual date code. It has the large 'F' on the neck plate, the serial number is on the headstock and one rally weird thing is that the cap looks like nothing I've ever seen before - a slim plastic rectangle about 10mmx15mm. Anyway, we'll see what its like then when I gig it in a couple of weeks time
8. Yes, they normally give you a 2 prong one which is ideal if you plan a European tour but you willl need to buy a 3 pin plug for it to work. I've bought a couple of amps from them and that's all I had to change
9. I tried that website and it just gives me the generic info rather than a close date of manufacture.
Guitar Info Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in the Year(s): 1984 - 1987 Fuji String Instrument Production Corporation Fuji String Instrument Production Corporation was opened in may 1960, they initially started manufacturing violins and quickly switched to classical guitar production. In 1962 electric guitar construction was started. Fujigen has a reputation for excellent quality and craftsmanship so the guitars they produce are highly regarded. They produce guitars via OEM for famous brands such as Ibanez, Epiphone, Yamaha and Fender (the import Special Interest Group nature model), G&L and others.
As a former multiple Musicman owner I think its pretty strange that there isn't a similar site to the one that you can access through the EB forums that gives all the information about the different models, changes etc given the popularity and simply the name 'Fender'.
10. How does the 4 balance compared to the 5? I loved the sound of my NT5 but the neckdive was too much
11. Glad I spotted this thread - I've just received a bass that I bought on Ebay and was a bit curious of the colour. It looks like mine is a '57 RI E series in CAR but my one has the rosewood fretboard. I'm not sure if you can date the pots like on the US models but when I'm changing the strings I'll probably whip the neck off and check the date on it - the previous owner reckoned 1985. If I like it I could be back in touch to see about getting the matching maple one :brow:
12. I think there was only the 1524 2x15" and 1084 (H) 8x10" cabs that were 4 ohms. There could be anomolies and one offs or others that i've never seen before Somewhere is a 1153 300w 4 ohm cab that used to be mine but I changed the driver in it.
13. Yes, t'was I Really looking forward to getting this - probably be looking to get myself a 1153 cab or similar to go with it for larger gigs.
14. I've found the dimensions and weight - PMd
15. one of the less common, non-mustard ones like I used to have. I'm not sure if you can actually but this colour model in this colour in the UK - I bought mine from an Ebay seller in Japan. Fantastic basses - but i would say that It is a good price considering the way exchange rates are just now but I got an absolute bargain at £330 for a brand new one delivered and customs charges included
16. Whoops, forgot to add the 'PMd' post yesterday. Just waiting for dimensions to see if its feasible to post or not. Definitely a contender to replace my now sold Shuttle and Schroeder
17. Is the Schroeder brand new? Mine took quite a few gigs before it really opened up and produce more bottom end. Its never going to be a deep cab - The Schroeder's party piece is being able to go rediculously loud without distorting I missed the rumbling bottom end of a larger cab and that's why I eventually sold mine after having it for 2 years
18. I think I've managed to narrow it down to something by Trace Elliot. I would like a 7210H combo like I used to have or similar but would love one of the valve jobbies such as the Twin or 1225V.
19. First song I ever played on my first ever 5 string was Righteous & the Wicked by the Chilis off BSSM
20. Didn't Mark King have a pink Jaydee? I had a pink Precision with maple board from the same period roughly and regret selling it.
21. Its also quite a bit far away from me as well, which is the other thing I thought about. I can't imagine postage would be very cheap - I posted a trace TVT9 guitar combo to someone and it cost about £70
22. you've o idea how long it took me to find the correct size allen screws for the Shuttle - 10/32" if I remember corectly
23. I've had a look at the V-type combo but didn't know if it'd be loud enough. The main reason for a combo is that I like simple - I have my cab on my cab stand at an angle and would like to have everything sitting together. With the GK & Schroeder, I had the cab on the stand and the amp in its rack on a keyboard stand and it took up a lot of room - space is another consideration as well for getting a combo.
24. Unhappy at my sound and looking for a change I have sold both my Shuttle and my Schroeder 1212L. When I first began playing seriously I had a Trace 7210H and a 1048H cab and it put out plenty of power and I quite liked the sound. A couple of years later and I enter my 'Flea' period where I sell the lot and buy myself a GK 800RB, using a Trace 1153 with a Celestion 300w driver replacing the original - I also bought myself an all black Stingray 5 string as well. This setup was smaller as I was now just using it as a backline since we now had a PA. After a particularly loud gig and being unable to hear myself, I sell everything and start from scratch with firstly: Ashdown EVO500 something or other head and 2 ABM115 cabs - the most indistinct muddy sound I've ever heard - possibly only fish at the bottom of the sea could hear the notes produced. Hartke HA5500 & one of the Ashdown cabs - rubbish. GK700RBII & Schroeder1212L - great sound, bags of power Shuttle & Schroeder 1212L - reasonable sound, bags of power. My predicament is this: I want to buy myself preferrably a combo, weight is unimportant, that i can use primarily as a monitor using my cab stand. I have this pointing up directly at me as I don't plan on doing pub gigs without a PA anymore. I'm not sure if I want something that I can add an extra cab to if such a scenario comes up and I don't want to have to spend a fortune for something that I 'might' add onto for the occasional gig. I have absolutely no idea how much power I need - I like to be able to hear myself and generally point my cab away from the rest of the band so that i can have it at a volume I like without upsetting them. My guitarist is very quiet, the vocal monitors are nowhere near me but I do have a loud drummer. My original trace was 200w as far as I remember and I've managed to get up to 600w over the last 15 years. The extra power was to cope with being in a band with no PA support so I have no idea how much power I actually need. I don't want to buy more than I need either. My preferred makes are Trace & Gallien as I have had good results in the past, most other makes are an unknown entity to me. I don't want anything by Markbass or Genz. I don't mind buying new or second hand, obviously I'll get more second hand. I could spend up to £1200 if I needed to but if a 10 year old Trace combo for £200 will suffice then I'd rather get that and bank the rest. I want something with a bit of meat as that was what I found lacking in the Schroeder. BTW, what is the life expectancy of a transistor amp before they start getting unreliable? So far on my list have been: GK1001 Neo 2x12" GK2001 GK Neo1x12" GK NEo 2x12" GK1001RB II GK700RB II Trace 715 Trace 7215 - old model from the late 90s that I've spotted - 300w Trace 1528 2x15" cab Trace 1048H Trace 1153 Trace 2103H Trace 1518 Various new Trace combos I'm going demented as I have ebsolutely no idea what I need.
