1. As long as the open string is in tune with the same string at the 12th fret (and you get them both in tune with each other by moving the saddles at the bridge back and forward until they are) then you'll be in tune. If you aren't in tune all the way up and down the fretboard then the frets must be in the wrong place. My bridge saddles aren't in a pleasing diagonal line, in fact they're all over the place, but my bass is in tune. Check out this video it makes setting intonation nice and simple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC30nJgIAJM
2. Your combo won't be putting out the full 575 watts into one speaker (15 inch I assume). You'd only get the full wattage with two 8 ohm cabs connected to the amp giving a combined impedence of 4 ohms. The old speaker will, more than likely, have been 8 ohms which means the amp would only have been putting out about 350 watts. A 400 watt 8 ohm Celestion or emminence speaker would be more than capable of replacing the old Ashdown speaker.
3. I'm in 3 bands. Two are blues bands and one is an acoustic rootsy kind of band playing original music. I can see the two blues bands stepping on each others toes as they play most weekends but the original band's gigs are few and far between. I want to get back to playing professionally so if I'm going to be a bass for hire I'll have to get used to letting people down gently when I can't do the gig.
4. If I'd known I would have gone too! Bollocks!
5. Just got an email from Ebay to say it's been removed probably because the whole thing was dodgy as a £3 note. We're writing to let you know that the listing for the following item you bid on has been removed: 220898188442 - 1960 Fender Jazz Bass Guitar Stacked Pot Knobs If you haven't yet paid for this item, we strongly recommend that you do not complete this purchase. If the seller asks you to continue with the sale after the item has been ended by eBay, the item won't be covered by eBay buyer protection. Purchases completed outside of eBay are extremely risky and highly susceptible to fraud.
6. I always thought the 70's jazzes had a neck tilt function operated by an small screw on the neck plate. Have you tried this? It might help you get the action lower.
7. I once had to learn 35 songs in an afternoon for a dep gig. I then drove 100 miles to the gig to find out I'd left all my notes in the rehearsal room DUH!!!. The singer Neil, amazingly, managed to write out all the chords plus lyrics, in the 15 mins before the gig for about 30 songs from memory. And thankfully the gig went ok with no major fluffs. So my brain capacity is miniscule..............but his must be like a small planet!
8.
ill go pick it up for you
NO PICK ME!!!! ME!!! ME!!!
9. What were you saying? Eh something about bass? I was a bit distracted. By the way those backing singers can't sing for peanuts.................I wonder how they ever got the job?
10. I've just bid £20 for it.................wish me luck!
11. Edinburgh eh? I live in Edinburgh...............but I don't own this bass. Although I do know some silly collector/investor types in Edinburgh who may be the culprits.
12.
Allparts necks are the dog's spuds though, and are second only to Fender. In fact they can be superior in some cases, in my humble opinion.
Oh well you missed out on my allparts neck with rosewood fretboard I was selling on basschat a few weeks ago. I ended up putting it on ebay and it went for next to nothing.
13.
The differences: Too much foam under the strings in a live situation. At 1.45 the bass player tries to play a line which he screws up because the notes die instantly. It doesn't work and sounds awful to me. This is the original, with foam. The same line at 1.56 sounds pretty good to me but this is in the studio where it works well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPJ-KnveLh8
I just love the sound but I do agree that it works better in the studio or at quieter gigs. I also love both of these versions, probably because I don't know the song that well so didn't notice that the bassist in the 1st clip had actually made a mistake.
14. One word........................PHIL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4nNv8K3vhk&feature=related
15. This is a work of art.............and the tuning's a bit funny (because he chopped off to much body and the bridge can't go back any further). 16. Fiat money is the type of money the western world uses these days. Fiat money is a method of exchange which has no intrinsic value......only the value we project onto it. They could make it out of recycled plastic. 95% of money circulating in the world is not in the form of paper or coins but bits & bytes on a computer these days. In reality money only has any value if people accept it as having value. Ever heard of quantative easing? It's a method of making money out of thin air. It's all a big con and part of the reason we're in the economic misery we're in now.
17. I have a TC electronic classic and it's VERY loud! And thats through just a 2x12.

19. Yes he was a contender back in the day but went a bit off the deep end. I got his last album 'Vibrator' which was pretty naff really. Wonder what happened to him? Edit : I did a bit of research and although he has gone a bit 'funny' he's still touring around Italy, where he now lives, with a band called nudge nudge and he's changed his name to Sananda Maitreya. I had a quick listen to his 2001 album Wildcard and it sounds pretty good ( I downloaded it tonight). There's various videos on youtube of him playing with his band and although his voice is as good as ever his electric guitar playing leaves a lot to be desired. With adecent band (and a decent guitar player) he could rip the charts apart he's that talented. But I think he's happy doing what he's doing and returning to the charts probably isn't his number one priority just now
20. I have a 30 year old bass made of mighty mite parts which I bought in 1984. The neck is a bit of a bassball bat but the frets have hardly any wear and I must have played about a thousand gigs with it. It has a brass nut.
21. I once forgot to a bring a lead to the gig and ended up having to use the keyboard players patch lead. It was about 3 inches long. I felt very silly.
22. Well my tc electronic amp sounds surprisingly good with a strat and a pod when it's going through my 2x12.
23. Hmmmm, I've had a problem getting a sound I like with my TC classic 450 and BC 212. So much so that I've considered going back to an Ashdown rig. Maybe I should try a gramma pad?
