1. I think it's pretty good but (may the lord strike me down for saying this) I think the bass is too loud in the mix on the non solo bit. Other than than that it's great.
2. I can remember listening to Elvis Presley do a version of 'Old MacDonald Had A Farm' on some album or other from the 60s or 70s. At the time I thought it was absurd but in retrospect I realised it was just a filler track he whacked on the LP to fulfill his contractual obligation to his record company to record so many tracks per year. I've a feeling this is something similar. And here it is..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1ZfjrvKgcU
3. C) is the answer. A lot of Japanese Fender basses have smaller tuner hole sizes. My Silver series Squier Jazz and MIJ 57 reissue Precision both had smaller tuner holes. There should be tuners available to buy for smaller sizes. Measure them and do a search online. Alterntivly you can file them to a larger size as it's only a matter of mm.
4. Try practicing the 'one finger per fret' technique. Eventually you'll train your pinky to obey your commands.
5. I have a Silver Series MIJ Squier from 1994. The MIJ Squiers were based on 62 Jazz basses, so have the metal grounding strip going from the bridge to the pickup (instead of a wire going from under the bridge to the control cavity) and I notice yours doesn't. I also notice that the bridge pickup is in line with the tone control like a 70s Jazz Bass. The Japanese Squiers I've seen have the bridge pickup in the normal, further forward, position. The neck on my Squier is also 40 mm at the nut, unlike a normal Jazz bass which would be 38mm. edit: One last thing - my 94 Squier fits a normal sized scratchplate.
6.
In my previous band (in fact most of my previous bands) it was doubly difficult in that I'd written all the material, and was often singing too (lead or backing). I know that no-one notices your mistakes, but it's not about that. Nowadays as soon as I step in front of an audience it's like I'm almost paralysed. Although I haven't vomited yet so I'm one up on Ozzy and Kate Bush!
The way I have got rid of anxiety or fear is by asking myself 'what's the worst that could happen?'. When I answer that question I realise how absurd my anxiety is. Because the answer is..............eff all! Try it.
7. Well I have a MiBass 500 and it a great little amp. It's loud and light and the EQ is pretty good too. I assume the 220 is the same but a bit quieter.
8.
OK, the story is as follow. I hook up with a group of musicians and for couple of weeks we tried to put a date in the calendar to audition me. After a few attempts, we locked a slot. The evening before I confirmed I would be attending the audition on the next day. Then, I got a call from my pregnant wife who told me she was going early into to labor. I spent a sleepless night at the hospital and witnessed the birth of my baby girl in the early hours of the morning. While my looking after my wife, I called the guy I arranged the audition with to cancel, explaining the Force Majeure. Now, it's been a week and they are ignoring my attempts to reconnect and put a new date in the calendar. I think I've been marked as unreliable... come on! Anyone with similar experiences?
In a miraculous burst of fertility, the singer/keyboard player, the drummer, the accordian player, and the guitarist, in my band (or their partners), all had babies within 2 months of one another this spring/summer). The band haven't had a rehearsal or a band practice since the births. I have the feeling that the band you want to audition with will be under the impression that you will have other more important priorities than band practice now that your baby has arrived.
9.
Frank, you need to get out more. Trust me!
I second that emotion.
10. Whoo Hoo. Hurrah for predictable junkie burglars!
11.
Speaker arrived yesterday! Talk about service! I was told 20th October and it arrives 3 weeks early - fantastic. Im going to fit it today without any alterations apart from the cab being lined with acoustic foam. We "headline" a bike rally tonight so im going to run it today with the 25 Hz sine downloaded from barefaced and try it out tonnight, can't wait!
How did things go?
12. Geddy Lee Jazz necks are very shallow. Certainly less than 23mm deep.
13. It's what that guy from muse was playing on Jools Holland's show the other day isn't it?
14.
I suspect a lot of the guitar forums out there are strewn with many members who are not on a progressive vibe with regard to helping each other out. Cheers in advance
I suspect you're probably right there (going by the guitarists I know).
15. Great doing business with Will. He bought my j-retro and the whole deal was easy from start to finish.
16.
The Ashdown MAG 115 deep cab is well built and very solid IME, the only reason I got rid of mine was the weight. I found it better tone wise than quite a few much more expensive, so called boutique cabs and I couldn't get it to rattle or buzz even at high volumes. But then, I don't go in for any upper mid or treble in my sound, so I can't comment on it's performance in that regard. Edited to point out that I didn't do anything to the ports when I fitted the Eminence 3015LF and there were no unwanted noises even at high volume.
I recently fitted an emminence Kappa 15 into an Ashdown cab and found it sounded excellent without any alteration. I suggest you fit the speaker and test it at volume before you even attempt any DIY. You may find you're very happy with the way it sounds and any further alteration is unnecessary.
17.
a good lightweight cab i should say
I've played mine through a barefaced compact and it sounded great. But that'll cost you £540 and it will be a two month wait before you receive it. If I were you I'd go for a hartke hydrive 1x12 for a real lightweight rig. You can use two if you're playing a stadium.
18. I believe you can ground the paint by attaching a wire from the ground loop circuit to a screw in the bottom of the control cavity and painting over it. My jazz had brass grounding plates under each pickup which I assumed connected to the earth loop that way. I have to say it did help to get rid of the hum considerably. Lots of good reviews here http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Supplies:_Shielding/Conductive_Shielding_Paint.html?offset=10&read=reviews
19. The Ray 34 should be able to get a pretty decent range of sounds. I've had two Musicman SUB Stingray basses and I really liked the sound but I've also own a standard Squier Jazz bass which I love the lightness, thin neck, feel and sound of. None of the 4 other Jazzes I've owned felt as nice to play as my Squier even though they cost 5 times as much. I recommend you don't sell your Squier to pay for an American Jazz because you'll probably regret it (I've moved on my other Jazzes but I still have my Squier).
20.
Thanks for tips everyone. This looks like a good idea for a first step: is it just a case of coating the surfaces of internal cavities, or does the tape need to connect electrically with the pickups and controls somehow? Sorry if this is a dumb question, this is the most advanced guitar maintenance I've ever considered
You can also use conductive, carbon based, shielding paint (which is the same type of stuff Fender use) which is easier to apply and was very effective when I used it on my bass. This is the stuff I used http://www.tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk/guitar-paint-and-lacquer/conductive-paint/conductive-shielding-paint.html
21.
It's a free bump and a compliment, so no I don't find it in the least bit annoying. Quite the opposite in fact!
Wot he says.
