Interesting to see this as a former shop owner. There was a recent thread on here where several BC'ers stated they would not buy an instrument (at least not without it being sold cheaply as ex-demo) if it had been hanging up in a shop and the shop had the temerity to allow other people to play it. Yes, sounds like you had a bad experience, I was like Pete and always let people try stuff, but it seems either way the shop can't win!

I use and like them as they give an extra bit of grunt which I was missing with flats and they don't chew up your fingers like roundwounds. They have started to mark my ebony board after 6 months or so but only surface scratches.

My old Aria cut into my shoulder so badly that I sold it for a pathetic amount on Ebay. Its replacement Cort is exactly the same weight according to the bathroom scales and yet I can gig it for a couple of hours with no problems at all.

Gigging last night was a bit of a squeeze and ended up setting up with the keys directly behind me. Very little room so he put his amp (a small but very pokey Alesis) on top of my Peavey Classic 120 valve power amp (clear of the vents). Half way through the first set, the Peavey coughed and spluttered to a halt. Thought a valve had gone but plugged it all in this afternoon, and ok, nowhere near gig volume, but ran the amp for over an hour with no problem at all. Could the other amp have caused mine to pack up - vibrations, magnetic fields etc? Thanks, Mike

Yep, sure there would be a big market for all those lovely old colours but perhaps this may reduce their custom shop sales.

Don't know what your idea of reasonable is, but I'd agree with OBBM, look around in the UK first, as once you add in freight and taxes you will be looking at a significant bump in price. I've just ordered from Jon Shuker, and thought his price was great.

Got to gig this for the first time last night and really loved the sound. Hard to describe, but I got a very bassy tone, far more so than I would have attempted with previous amps as the definition wouldn't have been there. This set up was exceptionally articulate, plenty of punch and provided a much fuller bottom end to the band without increasing the volume levels. Very pleased to have made the conversion to valves and pleased to say this is not a heavy option either!

Get to try out the new rig - Peavey 120 watt all valve power amp and Digitech BP8 valve pre-amp. Sounds great at home but the acid test tomorrow night. Fingers crossed!

Slightly OT but it is amazing how much difference individuals can make to the set up and break down. I was working as manager/tour manager for a fairly well. known Texan blues guitarist/singer and we had the breakdown down to a fine art on the first tour - 15 minutes and we were all down at the merch stall selling CD's. Next tour, different drummer who liked to "wind down" straight after the gig, all of a sudden we were up to 11/2 hours. Had a chat and agreed the wind down would be after all the gear was in the van and evrything wernt smoothly from there on. Talk to the guys, tell them it is part of the job and don't let it happen again!

Just added my vote to what turned out to be the most popular. You can buy excellent gigging/recording basses from Ibanez, Cort, Aria,Tanglewood etc, within that price bracket - it's just that we don't choose to

Might get quicker results looking for Ray Charles What'd I Say - I know Jerry Lee was the original but Ray's version seems to offer more results.

You listed most of the gear you're using but didn't say which cables!!!! Great news and will look out in the gig section if you ever venture towards the Sussex border.

We're doing "Serve Somebody" along with a lot of Dylan stuff. Just don't listen to (oh, alright, go on then for a laugh) Desolation Row - got to be the worst harmonica solo EVER (and that's saying something from someone who listens to Paul Jones' Radio 2 show)!!
