1. Is it worth speaking to the guys at Purple Chili?
 2. Get a fretless 5 - mine is the only bass I use and love it!
 3. Ah, set off nicely by the formica table
 4. This one may be a little over-indulgent for some tastes but hey, let's celebrate some amazing writing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp8gr05o-co

 6.
Keep the playing simple. You also won't get as much sustain out of your strings as usual. It's usually less of a problem than you might think. I've done gigs at skiing events where, even under lights, the stage temperaure was barely above freezing. Just keep your hands warmed up between songs. I did try one of those little metal boxes that hunters use. They're lined with something fireproof and you leave a slow-burning piece of charcoal in them. They fit in your pocket. To be honest, I didn't really need it in the end though.
The gel type versions of these available in Millets and other camping/outdoor shops.
 7.
How is it that songs with chord sequences such as I, V, IV and I, V, VI, IV continue to be written and recorded? Surely any songwriter or artist with any integrity or artistic worth would avoid such overused, over-familiar changes in favour of something less cliched.

A great songwriter can make the simplest, off the shelf, chord structure, into a great song.

Completely true, however, some songwriters take the most overused, off the shelf chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the masses.
Which is somewhat different to your initial post. Artists with integrity and artistic worth will continue to make great songs from the simplest of chord structures.
 8.
Or even better... listen to The Little Willies' version. Norah Jones on lead vocals and a sleazy, greasy, downbeat feel... stunning!
Like that a lot!!
 9. I love the irony of this post being in off topic "But you don't really care for music, do you?" I'd like to think he'd see the funny side too!
 10. Country music probably epitomises the ideal of "playing for the song", which, as you've probably gathered by now means nno embellishment from the bass. Would love to work out the ratio of bass to guitar notes on this clip!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwws6XPZ1JM
 11.
Bass guitar has been being used as an upfront melodic & solo instrument in folk rock music for decades. Check out some of the superb playing by Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span) & Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention) back in the 70s,
And on some of their later stuff - here's a lovely bit right at the top of this Fairport track - lots more nice playing through the rest of the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN-Z5H7TJQE
 12.
Yes I know, many of us think that this is impossible. I also realise that many people do not like folk or traditional music. But... have a listen to this from 1 minute in. It just might change your mind (or at least give some food for thought)
Like it a lot, and the bass playing is fantastic and used to great effect, but is it lead/melodic? To me it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective without the vocal being there.
 13. I am a fan but I much prefer this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJEZWsnIECo
 14. But I still can't help being an over-physical player
 15. There was some great science on this somewhere before - I'll see if I can find it. Edit - found it - scroll down beneath the pictures: http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/theramp.html
 16.
I've got a Behringer octave pedal that works fine. PM me your address and you can have it for free if you want it.
Does the Behringer do the octave up? Great if it does, but shows how poor my research was a couple of years ago :0
 17. Unless Joyo or Mooer have come up with something in the last couple of years I'm pretty sure you will struggle with a cheap Pog clone. Loads of octave pedals but very few that do the octave up. Plenty of cheap distortions though.
 18. Then of course, the humour in all the vintage "Rude Blues" like Robert Johnson's You Can Squeeze my Lemon til the Juice Runs Down my Leg" But we've de-railed a bit...
 19. Gave you seven children, and now you want to give them back. BB again, How Blue Can You Get.
 20.
Your workmate was of course completely correct in his observation. Nobody could seriously think that BB King was joking when he sang Nobody Loves Me But My Mama (and she could be jivin' too).
Or - I've got a good mind to give up living, and go shopping instead. Gonna buy myself a tombstone and pronounce myself dead!
 21.
Fame studios is in the middle of a shopping plaza - seems quite surreal. And Muscle Shoals Sound Studios is in a trading estate - dunno what I expected to see, but...
Is the big Muscle Shoals water tank still there with the town name painted on? They say never meet your heroes. I think the same probably goes for these iconic places Michael.
 22.
He's out at the Tickled Trout that day.
23.
I'd be very interested to see that.
Here you go - lots in Swedish, but looks like there is some cool old footage in there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9iuOXQaKo8
 24.
Bryn Terfel is for the Cheltenham music festival, not the Cheltenham jazz festival.
But what about his brother Bryan?
 25.
Very unsung!! He was even airbrushed out of the FAME studios documentary that they made a couple of years ago! Not even mentioned once. He was on many of the hits that came out of FAME studios in the 60's. I believe he was the band leader in the studio on many of the old soul hits. He wrote the bass line for Memphis Soul Stew.
Yes, was a poor representation. There is a 70's Swedish documentary on Youtube - will post when I'm on a computer.
