1.
I love this album
Sorry but then there a quite a few getting mentioned that I really like!
2. Cracking guitar solo and guitar/bass interplay at the end of Rapture (about 15 mins in to video).
3. Compositions was (must dig it out so it becomes is) a favourite of mine.
4. Derek & the Dominos, Layla & Other Assorted Lovesongs - Layla has got to be one of the worst "classics" of them all!
5.
Certainly a nicer bass. My first thought was Ibanez SR or SRX - modern ones use the same bridge and the control cover's the right shape, but other things don't match up. So not that, but something related - a different Ibby, or something from the same factory - a Cort, maybe. Edit - pups & bridge would match a Cort GB74.
Hopefully a GB34, bad enough, but the 74 is a decent slab of wood!
6. I think Planet Rock were on to this this afternoon - Final Countdown AND Eye of the Tiger in one show 😒
7. Equipment & transport (or is that not an issue in US - amazing how many potential band members over here think they can get away with not having one or both of these)?
8. Just discovered my first signs of OCD - stop it, put it away
9. Thread resurrection - just been looking for some stuff and stumbled across this one that we all somehow missed earlier (either that or the search function isn't working ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B85dYk77V-o
10. They are (were?) members on here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/258769-bass-japan-direct-the-best-in-new-and-used-mij-basses/
11.
Fascinated to know who your 200 are! Have you got a notional list already or is it building up as it goes along? Like how you covered a genre with the reggae selection and that's a nice way to make it into a series of more bite sized blogs (also less daunting/soul destroying for you as you won't have one long never quite finished blog hanging over you). So curious to see what's coming up next... a metal edition with, say, Harris, Burton, Trujillo, Kilminster etc, a pop edition with Gunnarsson and others, a folk blog with Glascock, Thompson, Pegg, Noyes etc, UK Session dudes blog with Foster, Flowers, Cottle... and so on and so forth? Nice format. Will watch with interest...
Thanks Trevor. No, I don't have a list, I look for little sparks of inspiration, and unknowingly, you've just given me one - thanks!
12. Tedeschi Trucks Band have been talking to me a lot lately. Love there own stuff but they also pick some great covers, so we've nicked this one in my band (including the Grateful Dead bit towards the end): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrSK-0-MQ8s
13.
Norwegian viking jazz rockers, Jaga Jazzist. The tendency in these threads is for loads of people to put up videos that nobody watches, but please have a listen to this and tell me I'm not off my rocker...
You're not off your rocker. Not my thing, but yes, can appreciate that it is quite special (and no, not using special in that silly teenage ironic sense)!
14. Fill the chambers with helium - nice and light and handy for any falsetto work
15.
Or should this be moved to JapCrap?
If you read the listing then no
16.
i do own a Uke bass from a Portuguese builder that is pretty good and sounds great.
That's more like it
17.
walnut body (various discussions have lead me to believe walnut is around the best for fretless), but I'm now onto pickups. I know this is really subjective and all about personal taste, but I'm looking for some suggestions around pickups that will give me good rich sound with a little bit of growl. I like the sound of the Delano Hybrids, but I'd be really interested to get smoother people thoughts or recommendations.
First quote is possibly one of the most contentious issues in the bass playing world (along with is Adam Clayton a good bass player), so stand by for fireworks!! Secondly, I'm presuming smoother was a typo or auto-correct? Thirdly, for growl have a look at Nordstrand Big Splits or Big Singles. Can't find the clip I wanted, or anything with fretless, but here's something from the forum: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/185313-nordstrand-big-singles-clip/page__p__1785207__hl__ibanez%20premium__fromsearch__1#entry1785207
18.
Basses - Japanese, excelent QC and detail, not mentioning sound as its subjective. Amps - British/German/USA, there's a lot of quality gear from these countries, there are also lots of unreliable amps that overheat and/or go into flames...
Nothing Portuguese?
19. I've set myself the task of writing an antidote to all the "best bass player" polls, and aim to do introductory pieces on 200 players. It has stalled a bit, but just finished a piece on Oteil Burbidge. http://www.modlock.co.uk Also have a look at Flat Eric on here. His is well worth a delve http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk
20.
Bingo! IMO at least... it had been bugging me too!
Just Buggin' - that was Whistle. Same time as Jazzy Jeff though!
21.
I love you Mike , I dream of Jeannie perfect , I got a few of the pictures in my head about right , pretty girls well 1 at least , early colour about right , set in florida 'Cocoa Beach' which fits the coast idea . I was reasonably good with the visualisation , many thanks
Glad of be of help Kev
22. I Dream of Jeannie - as borrowed by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince in Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOaFh-yJk_k
23.
I also have a fondness for the amps of H|H Electronics,
I think there are quite a few of us who have a nostalgic soft spot for HH - my first school band, bass and two guitars through a 100 watt PA head, into some sort of home built 15" cab. I'm sure they were nowhere near as good as we like to think
24. No, not for me, but so many Bacharach & David songs where I can pick out all the string, horn and backing vocal arrangements. Odd one I know!
25. Personally I do try and have something that looks appropriate, but would have thought the Ibanez really wouldn't look badly out of place in a classic rock band. So sorry, can't tick either option.
