Nabbed one and now I’ve had some time with it I really like it. Never tried the DLX which I was very keen to try but did dig my OG Beta. The MkV does all the things I’d want this type of preamp/drive to do. I was joking earlier it’s like a cross between the original Beta/Bass Soul Food/Spark booster only with better components and dialled in for the bassist. I’m not sure what else is out there but my low gain drive box is well and truly ticked! No need for a clean blend and having the ability for do 9, 12 or 18v just opens up the headroom while retaining that great tone. Top job SGFX!

I use dual Lock and if you’re sneaky with it and don’t plan to move pedals about you can double up so you get extra clearance. One piece stuck to the board, one to the pedal and then two pieces back to back and boom. Easy to do and as it happens I’m selling a board with a dual lock already in place 😀

I’m very keen to play one and see how it feels but if it’s comfy, hangs well on the strap and the scale feels good (looks like a regular scale but with the bridge closer into the centre of the body rather than towards the edge of the body) I’ll have one. The lobster unboxing showed off some sounds and I like them… even the bridge sound. My instinct was to think about Creamery Bisonic or DarkStar type swaps but I think I like it from that demo as is. GuitarGuitar say October due date but if Andertons get some sooner that could be the ticket.

I have a wee cheat sheet for frequencies/notes that was very handy for quickly helping mitigate those boomy rooms or feedback The idea being if you play an A and you get boom you can work on the frequency of the note or the 5th as I believe they’re most likely the culprit notes/frequencies. To get the higher frequencies just double the numbers up for the respective range of the instrument causing the issue. If it’s an A note causing feedback the issue is likely gonna be a higher freq than what’s listed here usually but be either 440Hz 880Hz 1.7kHz 3.4kHz 6.8kHz or up and up approximately and if it’s a boomy resonance thing it could be worth checking 220Hz 110Hz 55Hz you get the idea. If that’s not working try the same simple process/equation for ‘the 5th’ which in this case is E. It helps if you can identity the offending note as that speeds up the problem solving rather than just twisting knobs mindlessly like our singer used to do before I gave him this chart! Its a simplistic formula but handy. To fix and issues you’ll obviously need an eq pedal so something with easy to grab sliders is useful as they tell you the frequency! The Genzler pedal on the for sales would be a great tool for this kinda thing. Ignore the missing # for the B-F#😖

Yeah I’d thought about that option just for fun but was happy with how it sounded as was. The beauty of the Dingwall was the pick ups are all the same size. Also the NG models I think still have the 3 pick up route so you could move the pick ups about too and experiment with their position.

Yeah I’d agree it’s a specific sound and it does sound good but I was thinking it would have Ben a good match (and it was) in my 80’s band. The look and sound being able to cop a solid p bass style sound. The bridge pick up has that same p bass quality but just a bit more brighter. The beauty of the same pick up in three positions is if you like the core sound then you get variations on that. I think they’re gray basses but just not as comfy for a wee shortie like me 😀

Just an overall feel for me. Although comfortable it just didn’t feel as natural as a F style guitar but I’ve always struggled with TB shape basses.

I moved mine on as it just wasn’t as comfortable as the Super P. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t a match for me. I’ve been spoilt😀

The Simone on here strikes me as the perfect combination of tube/transformer DI but with added eq and just a really solid pedigree. Noble meets Monique kinda thing.

Same basic set up me. Great wee combo the Rumble. I have a Beta but think I’ll get the MkV. Did you try any of the original versions

Any further thoughts and did you have. An earlier version to compare it to? I had my beta (not a MkV) on last nights gig and did enjoy it but it was more as an always on unit for the last set. Sounds great but the added versatility of the MkV is drawing me in!

Check out my for sale ad I’ve a few pedals the Basswitch drive in particular could be great in your trio. Fills in the midrange nicely. Back on topic my revised board might be getting pimped soon… more updates as and when!

If it’s any help the sound engineer at last nights gig approached me at the end of the second set and told me I had the best bass sound she’s heard in that venue. I was playing a Flea jazz! I’m sure there were other factors but like I said above the ‘64 CS pick ups are a big part of the oomph. She simply described the bass as “just sounding right!” And she had basically nothing to do to the sound she was getting from my board. 🤷

The flea jazz is a great example of the jazz bass. Neck is slim and it’s real strong point ore the pick ups. Custom shop ‘64’s - you could probably retro fit some high end boutique pick ups into another nitro jazz but I’d say grab a flea or a road worn and make mods if needed from there
