That's a good idea!
Thanks. It's my first.

Why not get some cheap bodies off Ebay, paint them some nice subtle(?) colours and stick them back on the bay? Hey presto...custom paint Ebay business!

How much influence do your band mates have on your bass playing?
paul h replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Well it's been many, many years since I have played in a band but I would have to say that the other people in a band influence my bass lines 100%. I mean that in the sense that my bass lines support/drive/follow (whichever is required) whatever else is being played. However, on the whole, their actual opinions mean very little to me! -
You clearly have no idea what a double negative is.
I know what a double negative is. I just don't know how to describe a phrase that is so painfully convoluted because you are so desperate to argue with someone that you contradict yourself in the space of two sentences.
The cab IS "colouring your sound. Whatever that means".
Sounds to me like you are very definitely stating that everybody else is wrong...but you don't quite know how. But they are wrong. You just don't what "that" means. But it does do "that". Whatever that is. Seriously fella, I have seen you tell people they are wrong and that their opinions are nonsense. You are blunt, rude, overly opinionated and aggressive. You jump into every single controversial thread. You are never very far away from trouble. It's just lucky that we have an ignore option because every time I am stupid enough to allow you back into my consciousness I have to put you back on ignore. I have zero respect for you and your opinions. Back on ignore you go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not at all. Ultimately you're going to have to wear it, and when you wear it crowds of people will be staring at you, so what it looks like is going to be important.
Or in my case it has to look good in the full length mirror in the bedroom. I'm 39 you know.

For me the single most important thing in a bass is....looks. I know that makes me shallow but let's face it, I am not going to even pick up an ugly bass to try it out. However I am reasonably semi confidant in doing my own set ups and although never perfect, I have bought many a dog and made it at least playable. So no actual horror story...but sympathy. I am sure one day I will buy something that can't be fixed! P.
To be honest guys, it's that sort of incitement that is causing the problems round here.
Fair enough...but where were you for this...
Do you still want that spirit level for installing the tweeter?
And this...
Probably wise. Damage limitation and all that.
Or this...
With respect Phaedrus - there's so many guys do the polar opposite with regard to these cabs, it's almost refreshing to hear a dissenting voice.
Or this...
Sorry, you obviously need it spelt out. At the Moffat bass bash there was a lot of discussion on finnbass about how the barefaced did not compare very well to the other cabs present. A lot of discussion. On Basschat, the same posters made hardly a mention. I find that odd. Why did the guys that were at Moffat feel unable to say on Basschat what they said on Finnbass? Perhaps it is because any posting off message on Bare Faced gets descended on by the white knights others have referred to? Perhaps that in itself is suppression of discussion. I have seen one member in particular, who obviously does not rate Bare Faced, get a lot of personal abuse.
This...
The cab IS "colouring your sound". Whatever that means.
???? (This one is just here for it's astounding double negative style contradiction.)
And I'll defend my right to think that Barefaced cabs don't live up to the hype. No probs there then.
THE HYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, back on topic, we wouldn't want the thread closing demon to make a visit.

My opinions are built on experience... unlike others around here.

Some are willing to learn. Some already know it all.
I know I'm being an arse now, but saying my post is a cause of the problems after you left all these slip by uncommented upon I feel is a bit unfair. What I tried to do is to inject some humour into the thread...possibly not very successfully. And a public apology to EBS Freak. I genuinely didn't mean to single you out...but hey, your posts are your posts! So all meant light heartedly...but probably not the most diplomatic I've ever been. Hey ho.

Can some one explain the whole Musicman, Stingray, Sterling thing
paul h replied to dave_bass5's topic in Bass Guitars
I haven't read all this thread. I can't be bothered. I have a 2 page maximum attention span. However...I like this... -
I used to run around like an idiot.

I have to be honest and say I haven't noticed any "hype". I have noticed plenty of people happy with their BF cabs and recommending that they are given a bit of time to settle down but to my mind there has not been any excessive strength of feeling. They are just something new. We all got excited over Markbass a couple of years ago, it's natural when something new comes along. The strongest views here seem to be from the people who claim to be "redressing the balance" by disagreeing with the BF users as fervently as possible. If you don't like BF cabs then fine, it doesn't really matter. It all kicked off when the "nay" camp started expressing how refreshed and satisfied they felt at a negative BF report. Let's face it, surely that alone is enough to negate all "subjectivity" from the follow up posts? You can't go from shouting "Wooo hoooo, somebody doesn't like Bf!!!" to "Purely subjectively, in my experience etc. etc. etc." It doesn't really wash any more. Of course, couple that with the fact that several members of the "nay" camp seem to be at the centre of pretty much every BC controversy makes me even more enamoured of Barefaced. And I have never seen or heard one. And I use combos. And have no money. See, it's not the "for" camp that's persuasive, it's the negative propagandists shooting themselves in the foot. But I have to confess to being biased here. Not necessarily in favour of Barefaced, but I will take the opposite stance to EBS Freak almost every time. Summary part 2... Barefaced Fans...I like them. Others...Yeah, but I tested them and I didn't like them. God, stop hyping them up. Barefaced Fans...You didn't like them? Oh well, that's cool. You could give them a bit more time? No worries though, it's all subjective. Others...STOP IT! Stop trying to force Barefaced cabs down my throat. I can't stand any more hype! Barefaced Fans...Whoa! Chill out guys. I like mine, and I thought you would too. No big deal though. I know they have issues, but I am happy to compromise for the weight and tone. Others.. La La La La I can't hear you! It's the HYPE...HYPE...HYPE...I can't hear my self think any more!!!!! I tried these cabs along side every other cab in the world and if Alex hasn't compared them in one million live situations against the largest Ampeg/Berg/Eden/EBS rig then he is a fool and he is going to hell!! Bareface Fans...Okay, I'm getting worried about you now. Can I get you anything? DO, YOU, NEED, YOUR, MEDS? Others...but...but......but......FINNBASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coil tap...mmmmm. Icing on the cake for me that is. Another cracking bass.

Oh yes, totally different animals...but designed to work brilliantly together. You can tell I want it can't you? I just can't justify any expenditure right now.

Has anybody had any experience of Record? As a committed Reason user I think it looks the nuts! P.

I'm quite taken with this at the moment http://www.hutchinsguitars.com/prod_details.aspx?pid=51 but I have to confess with being quite bored with bass guitar at the moment and think we should all be replaced by tuba players.
To the point where it's useless right? I love the reviews where some kid has obviously gone into a shop and played a guitar for 5 minutes and then writes a thesis on it's merits at a gig and how it's the best thing ever. (Come to think of it, there is a lot of that on here - people recommending stuff that they obviously haven't seen, let alone tried) Either that, or they pour out hate on the product they are reviewing because they haven't got the dollar to buy it! (Come to think of it, there is a lot of that on here as well.)
Just edited that for you EBS. Seems a bit more balanced now.
Harmony Central reviews are the biggest waste of time ever! Written by kids reviewing their dad's jazz box guitars saying that they are crap for metal...
Sounds to me that they are quite useful for kids new to the guitar looking to play metal but unsure whether their Dad's old jazzer would be suitable. A little specific maybe, but still some use.
Don't see why its a shame its just a fact. I've tried the Compact and i am happy to pay the extra £150 for my Bergantino. A much better cab IMO
Because everybody is searching for their ideal set up and if you try something that might be the answer and it isn't...then it's "a shame". I have no hidden agenda here. No need to try and read anything else into it! Harmless comment. Hardly worth mentioning really. But seeing as you did mention it... You don't think being disappointed in something could be described as "a shame"? You have never in your life tried something, not liked it and said "Oh, that's a shame!"? Do you always tough it out and go for the "Life is full of disappointment lad, just move on, no need to get emotional, stick to the facts." Personally if I have made an effort to try something new, whatever that may be, and it doesn't work out, I think "a shame" is a perfectly acceptable term to use. Of course if you want to use an innocent comment to justify your sentiments (Which do not need justifying in any way.) then go for it. See I think your second sentence stands up fine on it's own. It's a good sentence. It tells a story, it makes your point. Clear and concise. I like it. IMO your first sentence lets things down a bit because there is no need for it to be there. It is surplus to requirements. Also I don't understand why a "fact" cannot be "a shame" as well. I don't believe they are mutually exclusive. There is the possibility that your desire to express your preference for a Bergantino over a Compact may have clouded your perception. Maybe you thought I wrote, "It's a shame the Barefaced cab is not the answer because they are the best thing since sliced bread and anybody who doesn't agree is worse than Hitler." Maybe that's what you thought I said. I didn't. I said it was a shame someone tried something and didn't like it. Which IMO is "a shame." I don't like people to be disappointed. I am going for a few drinks with friends tomorrow. One friend can't make it. That is both a shame and a fact. Only joking...
Yeah, I emailed them recently for a single low B string that wasn't listed on the site. They gave me a link to order it and it turned up the next day! So check with them if they don't have what you want in stock!
They did the same thing for me when I wanted something I couldn't find....what it was I forget! But they have always been excellent every time I have used them.

Thread summary... Dodgy handles, not satisfied with tone. Speakers need playing in a bit so the jury is out. Took a bit too much effort to sort out. Bit of bad feeling generated. And in usual basschat style this has been interspersed with people being happy to hear that some body was not happy with a product.(??? Still don't get it.) A few little personal digs here and there and somebody even managed to mention finnbass. So, no change here then.

+1 to the last two posts. I have written long posts to this thread twice now and then thought better of it and deleted them. But to quickly summarise what I was intending to say... All manufacturers go through quality control problems. Fender anyone? Alex is one of us. We were here when he started Barefaced. We should know what to expect. He is not pretending to be a huge multinational company with the resources that would bring. Nobody is pulling any wool over any ones eyes. If you only want to deal with companies with a long track record then don't buy from a fledgling company. Common sense. The major thing I just cannot understand, not matter how much I rack my tiny brain is how any one could find satisfaction in hearing negative comments about Barefaced???????? You are not "sticking to the man" by airing negative views on BF. You are making an already difficult task of starting a company that much harder. The only views that matter on Alex's cabs are the people who are using them, or have used them. If you have used them and don't like them then that is a shame, but it's hardly news worthy. Tone is subjective and there are plenty of people who don't like *insert major manufacturer here*. I can only assume that those so vocally against Barefaced have used them regularly and indeed compared them to whatever 2000x10" legendary wardrobe sized system that seems to be popping up as a frame of reference. I found my LMII and Aguilar GS112 combination far too harsh. I think I will go and find someone who likes them and argue about it. Remember the OP was a thorough review of a quality control problem. I doubt very much if it was meant as a call to arms!

I would like to build a hollowbody, shortscale three string with an onboard distortion circuit thingy. I can barely dress myself without hitting my thumb with a hammer so it's not really likely to happen.

Sorry to hear that this hasn't resolved itself during my absence. I agree with the TB option. It's time to start making a little noise about this I think! P.
