SX rat!

Cheers guys...it does sound exactly like you expect it to, in a good way! Here is the bass line played properly Nik!

SX rat!

Finally finished off my SX P rat bass! This is a combination of the neck off my first SX, which I butchered in a botched j pickup experiment, teamed with the cheapest fully loaded p bass body I could find on ebay. Things to note are the misaligned bridge, complete with the original holes where I had to move the bridge back to get it intonated properly. The badly fitting scratchplate and the insulation tape over the pole pieces to cut down on clank! None of that matters of course, because it sounds like this... Gotta love the cheap stuff! Paul. p.s. Recording with a dodgy lead....don't do it kids!
4. That was a bargain for somebody....especially since the sunburst is the best colour!
5.
I like em Paul! Cool the way you edit your vids together, what software are you using?
Thanks I am mainly using the free Ulead software that came pre-installed but it's fairly limited so I am on the look out for something else. Any titles were added in Adobe After Effects. I am on the look out for a proper multi-tack video editor so I can do more camera angles etc. Is this good place to admit that I am miming? LOL. I hate hearing myself play live, my timing is awful. So I create the track using the best takes, looped up because I am lazy, and then I just film myself playing along! P.
6. And another!
7.
Thanks, that's handy info. Yeah, that's how I do it anyway - I guess I didn't realise its called a 'layer mask'. Or maybe it isn't?
It might not be called that. I dunno to be honest. But it's what I call it that counts.
8. Okay, get yer wood out. Make a selection of the bit you want to keep....body shape, headstock etc. Press the layer mask button. Hey presto. It's even better if you use the path tool.
9. Just for you.... When the geezer selected the pixels around the body shape, and then deleted that from the walnut image he is stuck with it. If he wanted to subtlety change the body shape he would have to import the walnut image again. However, if he used the selection, or better still the original line paths and turned them into a vector/layer mask it would keep the entire walnut image intact, but just hide the bits you don't want to see. I may well be tempted to a quick tutorial myself.... or maybe not. P.
10. One minute into the video...use layer masks people!!!! P.
11. Build something that looks exactly like an existing bass and then google for "mock-up" images. Photoshop.
12. Just added another one.
13. Just going to bump this one as I think it would be good to keep this going. As soon as my gorilla pod turns up expect some neck POV videos to appear! EDIT: Ped, any chance you can delete the discussions I mistakenly started at the group while randomly pressing buttons? Cheers.
14. Thanks. Bear in mind it has had some EQ'ing in Reason. Although I think the Zoom was pretty much flat, I just use it to boost the signal. Just had a trawl through my old posts and the bass including a replacement black scratchplate and shipping cost around £170. The Artec pickups I got from Prosebass for £20. So I make that £190. Paul.
15. Cheers Ped. I believe it's my unbelievably sloppy keyboard playing that gives it a bit of funk! I have no idea what I'm doing you know!
16. I've subscribed...and made a video! I will upload it to the basschat channel once it's sorted. P.
17. Tesco Value. Actually it's a coin toss between Fender and SX! P.
18. I was the same, couldn't get on with the Prosteels at all. I now use cheapo Roberts Growlers off ebay for my stainless steel needs! P.
19. I had a Hohner Arbor P and I loved it. I am also 99.99% sure Machines Dad bought the very same bass from a shop 20 years later! I loved it, but the neck was the best thing about it. As far as I recall it has a plywood body which for me would limit the potential of upgrading it. I reckon if you can get a cheap enough neck off ebay then it might be worth tinkering with but I certainly wouldn't put the cost of a new bass into it. Hopefully Machines will pop into this thread and extol the virtues or lack of the bass. P.
20.
I like the idea of the cab pic in the above pic, but here's one I chucked together:
Nice. I like that one.
Well I wasn't asking for the opinions of every web designer on basschat, just that of the average bassist! My apologies if I've wasted anyone's time, I simply wasn't expecting those kind of responses, just ones like "more pictures, less confusing menus, less text, etc". Alex
I don't think we are wasting our time. It's quick to bang up a quick idea and we only do it because we are genuinely interested. Funny how my and ~tl's ideas are so similar. P>
21. Just a quickie.
22.
But please, please please don't put text over an image as in Myspce. It's a disaster for legibility......
Good God NO! lol. Was just thinking of the 100 or so pixels (screen res. depending) on the edges! I might even have to mock one up quick as a demo!
23. Always happy to consider some kind of web design=gear trade! Paul. But here are a few instant thoughts... Get some nice CSS styling on the navigation, remembering to use a sprite if you want to use background images. Personally I would just echo the logo with nice use of borders. Centre the design. 900px wide is fine but make it a centred div and you're good to go. Centre section is fine with white background but some kind of speaker cloth style background image might look cool for the remaining visible screen. Another quick tip is to go for php and use an include statement to load up the navigation. Then as the site grows you can add buttons to the nav in one file and have it appear on every page.
24.
Yes but that's different. And also I agree with you in that there is no difference EXCEPT for the fact that a 62 or 75 bass IS from 62 or 75.
Why is it different? I don't like modern, highly polished furniture. I prefer it to look like it's been kicked around a farmhouse for 50 years. Same with basses. Also I was thinking of reissues. The majority of us do seem to agree that it's perfectly fine to buy a brand new bass that is designed to look like it was made 30 or 40 years ago. So why not go that step further and make it look as though it has been played for that long too? Would you buy Fords brand new 2009 model if externally it looked exactly the same as a Mark III Cortina? (I bloody would!) I guess at the end of the day it's no big deal, some of us like old and knackered, albeit faked and some want genuine, or shiny. The biggest difference I have noticed is that the relic fans never start threads about how they don't understand people who like shiny basses! Paul. p.s. Quick caveat...I haven't got any reliced basses although I am GASing over a hardcore reliced Sandberg PM4.
25. I don't think it is a replacement for genuine vintage. At least not in my case. I like the look of a beaten up old/vintage bass. I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to pay through the nose to get one though. I am also a bedroom player so there is very little chance of a bass wearing to that degree. Contradictory to that, I am clumsy bugger so a nice new shiny finish probably won't stay dink free for long. And to play devils advocate, why is liking a relic bass so different to liking a design from 62 or 75? A lot of us like retro. some of us like relic too. And one more thing, the fire surround in my front room was custom made for me from reclaimed pine. It's full of holes, cracks and there is hardly a straight edge in site...but it looks cool. Paul.
