1. + 1 for mahogany with a maple cap. IME (albeit mainly with guitars) that is a killer combination. I did have one cheap (what a surprise) bass by Mania, which I believe is a brand owned by Shine, that had that wood combo. It definitely had some growl and bite to it. P.
2. People complaining about discussing basses...on a bass forum. Amazing. Surely there are only n. amount of topics we can cover anyway? I reckon we probably discussed everything a couple of years ago so maybe we should all just shut up and leave? Sorry to be confrontational, something I normally try to avoid, but if you are not interested please just stay out of the thread. Simple.
The one person that would notice would be you, and that might well influence how well you play.
I think that's a key point. If we were only doing this for the audience perception we would probably be all playing cheap P copies. (Nothing wrong with I may add.) The fact is that all this time and effort we put into tone is purely for ourselves. And if anything, anything at all makes us happier and play better, then that's got to be a good thing. P.
3. I know nothing about exotic woods being a bit of an ash and maple man myself. I am actually a bit surprised by the people who think wood doesn't make a difference! I would imagine most luthiers feel it makes a substantial difference. So how do you equate the non importance of wood to bridges for instance? Most people seem to agree that a bridge with more mass will, to a certain degree, improve tone and sustain. So how can woods of different densities not affect tone? Puzzled.

Yamaha BB615

Love my BB614. Great bass for the money.
"would be looked down upon by real bass players"
However I'm not a real bassplayer! P.
5. That looks damn good. Love the colour. You lucky man! P.
6. Is this now a Reverb or has it just closed altogether? I did an Ikea=Guitar shop deal with the wife but checking on Reverbs site it doesn't list MK as a store. Anyone been there recently? P.
7. Very cool....but the love of sunburst will come with time! My idea of heaven used to be Jake E Lee's electric blue Charvel and I just couldn't understand "brown" guitars. Then sometime in my 30's I developed a love for bursty sun'ness! Looking forward to seeing the fabled pink SX! P.
8. Mr. Fudge is obviously too rude to reply...or maybe West Bromwich has run out of internet. Yes...he means fully loaded. P.
9.
It doesnt smell, but I could wax lyrical about its awesomeness. It's a great bass with very nicely voiced pickups - the selector switch setup is great and the drop d tuner is quality (unlike recent hipshots I've used). The middle position sounds best to my ears with a P bass sound but less boomy and more defined....yumm. I'm probably going to sell mine pretty soon by the way - just trying to weigh up if I keep the P bass or the Tony. Edit: oh yea, and for some sound clips check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsVLOJDX-fM J
Rather spookily just finished watching that. No denying a great fretless tone, but I would definitely go for fretted. I just can't seem to find any sound samples for one. P.
10. Errr....now you've got me. How about something to quell the GAS. Does it smell for instance? Or you could wax lyrical about it's awesomeness. Or you could tell you hate yours and you will sell it to me for 50p. See what happens when I venture outside the Off Topic forum? P.
11. Anybody have any experience of the Tony Franklin fretted bass? I like the idea of the 3 way pickup switch but haven't been able to find any video or audio of the fretted version. P.
12. Just looked a bit heavy handed on the burst. Still nice though. P.
13. Careful now. After our last liaison I added your sister to my Facebook. P.
14. Trade it for a P you nonce. P.
15. I know absolutely nothing about Fenders, or basses in general...but does the sunburst look a bit off? P.
16. Understood completely mate. But that pretty much is my piano ability! LOL. I can find my way around a keyboard just from programming but I have no idea what fingers to put where. I have trouble doing more than one finger bass parts. And I have no idea what chords I used in any of those pieces. I just plonk my hands down until it makes a nice noise! I have to admit enjoying it immensely. It's so nice to be able to achieve the required sound so easily. You gotta love Reason! P.
17.
i play in the Quireboys www.myspace.com/thequireboys 2 originals bands 1 is www.myspace.com/ravenvandelle the other dosnt have a name etc, very early stages. 2 tribute bands...1 function band...and i do alot of dep work in europe..and studio work here and there... but will play with anyone! just love playing!
I have to ask mate, did the bloke off Flog It play drums for the Quireboys at any point? Or is it just another Bob Holness tyle rumour? P.
18. I play in no band. P.
19. Thanks for the comments...much appreciated. To be honest, a lack of substance is not actually a bad thing for these pieces. They need firmly to fall into that "aural wallpaper" category! It's all about the atmosphere. As long as they are not overtly rubbish I am happy. Especially considering the amount of time they are taking to do. And I agree about spooky being harder than it would first seem. I scored a short horror film once and after using a few chromatic scales and dissonant chords I ran out of ideas! That's why I tend not to compose to order any more. I'm not very good at it. I would rather just record whatever that pops into my head, and hope someone somewhere has a use for it. Thanks again for the input. Paul.
20. I hate recording live instruments, I just do. So pretty much all the music I produce is just programmed into Reason. I tend to have mixed results, some things I'm very happy with, some things not so much. However I have always missed a certain degree of "feel". So, I decided to do some piano based tracks. I was going for that slightly eerie, slightly out of time down tempo thing that seems to work equally as well in a horror movie or a car advert! I guess my real inspiration would be the "Rachel playing the piano/unicorn" scene in Bladerunner. The reason I went for that style is that I have absolutely no keyboard or piano ability. Whatsover. Therefore I think I might just about get away with it. The problem is this. It's very difficult for me to tell if it sounds "child like" on purpose, or it just sounds like a rubbish piano player. Here is the link to my Audiomicro page. The new piano tracks are "Confessions", "Colder", "Dulce Muertos" and "Curious". 21. You should somehow use one of the BassChat video idents I tried to force on Ped ages ago...nothing like a bit of free advertising in return! P. EDIT: Never mind...appear to have deleted them! Ooops.

Aria STB-GT5

Just thought I would resurrect this one after I found this video. Not the best demo in the world but better than nothing. http://thepocket.multiply.com/video/item/3...ia_bass_guitars More videos on the site too. Paul.
23. My photography skills limit me to taking one unblurred photo per annum but I will endeavour to get some more at some point. I didn't do any direct A/B tests but when I popped down to BassDirect with Mr. Fudge I had a good old play on a USA J, a MM J and a Nordy. And as nice as they all were, I still can't find a reason to justify the extra moolah! OK, this SX is pretty buzzy right now because I decided to set the action how I would ideally like it, and bugger the consequences! I don't actually mind a bit of controlled buzz here and there. I might push the boat out when I am working again and spend another 20 quid on an Artec EQ for it! P.
24. It's the standard high mass bridge that comes on the Ltd models. All I have done is swap the white plate to a black one and fitted some Artec pickups courtesy of Paul Rose. P.
25. Finally took a picture of my 75 Ltd in the daylight and thought it warranted resurrecting this thread.
