1. I bought the Scarbee J Update 4 a few months ago from wombatboter, who bought it from Crazykiwi but didn't quite become good friends with it. This is also the bass that can be seen in the Basschat header! I sent Chris Celinder an e-mail with some questions about the bass, and he sent me this message back:
Hello Hidde, Thanks for your kind mail :-) Yeah it seems that that bass has become somewhat of a legend. The body on the Scarbee bass is Danish ash. Medium weight - lighter than Northern White Ash (US) and heavier but with more heft than Southern Swamp Ash (US). The neck is hard rock maple with the same hard rock maple fingerboard. Pickups are Lindy Fralin Jazz, and the Aguilar OBP-1 preamp is setup with double volume, bass (boost), treble (cut) ... or "vintage tone control" if you will. The trimmer controls the boost level of the treble in the preamp. I am not a fan of treble boost (on a bass), thus I always wired the OBP-1 this way so you can preset the amount of max treble on the trimmer and then cut it from there on the front of the bass to suit the music. The Badass bridge is from right before I designed my own bridge (with string-thru-body-option). This bass has serial # 9804130 ....meaning it was built in April 1998 and is bass number 130. May you get a lot of good music from that bass :-) Take care, bro, Chris
That cleared up a lot for me! I am now using this bass on a lot of occasions, mainly with Nona (melodic pop rock music). The only thing I'm not really sure about is the colour, I'm considering having it refinished (and I would have that done at Chris' workshop). Pics below of course
2. I dig it! What year is the Precision from? My guess is '77?
3. I made this just now. It's approx. 8 tracks of bass guitar. Everything is my Yamaha TRB5II, except for the bass part and the solo, which is my Cobelens & de Bruyne. This is the track: CLICK These are the basses:
4. As this topic has been bumped anyway, here's my evolution. I started on a Crate BX-25. Then I bought a Roland DB500: Then I got my first stack, an Ashdown ABM500 EVO II and an Ashdown ABM410T: I thought that was too heavy. I traded a bass for an Aguilar DB112 cab: Then I sold the ABM410 cab and got a second DB112. Finally I sold the ABM500 and got an Aguilar AG500SC and that is my rig today.
5. It worked and it sounds amazing Check out the sound: http://www.hidderoorda.nl/dina.mp3
6. Well played man With many people who play this stuff, I can't help thinking: "Nice, but now play a proper song with a simple groove, for about 6 minutes!" However, that doesn't occur here somehow
7. I want to marry the righthanded version of your '75 RI.
8. I am going to look at the setup when I've changed the strings. Thanks
9. I want to restring my 35" 5-string bass with an E-A-D-G-C tuned set. Does the tension on the neck significantly change when I do this?
10. Yes, the Classic Vibe series are absolutely great I've tested quite a lot of them and they all seem to have "something". I like the Jazz Bass best, I think the Vintage Modified Precision sounds and feels better, but that's just taste.
11. It sounds great! Still a bit Yamaha-ish, funny enough (and that's a compliment). I also have a Yamaha BB N series, but the 5-string version with Soapbars. It's still a wonderful instrument, despite all thos other basses I've had (and still have).
12. Yes, for about half an hour today, the lighting was ideal. I took advantage of that time Thanks!
13. 1) What kind of maintenance do you carry out on your instruments at home/gigs? Setup, string changes, cleaning, small mechanical repairs, part replacement. I don't have soldering iron and know very little about electronics so I let other people do those things. 2) What position is it easiest to have the instrument in for these actions? (vertical, horizontal, at an angle?) Mostly on the table or on my lap. 3) Are there any tasks you currently carry out where you find it hard to securely orientate the instrument in an ideal working position? Not really, except for removing the neck. I find either the body or the neck falling to the floor.
14. Funky. Check out the drummer's face at his snare hits (approx. 1:03). It's like he takes a snare drum bite.
15. Finally got all the stuff together: As you can see I've modded the Precision a little further. It got new pots (CTS), a finger rest and a pickup cover. I love it now
16. Unfortunately the bass that gets the least attention at the moment, but it's still a great instrument. I just replaced the tuners. It's time for some new strings on this baby. E-A-D-G-C.
17.
Wow... fretboard looks like glass!
Thanks @markl: After I installed the bridge I gave it a good setup and now it still plays like a dream. Somehow the Gotoh enables a really low setup on this bass
18. About the epoxy: That cost me about £75. The sound has changed a lot. The sound became more defined, the sustain improved a lot and it got more "zzzzingggg". About the pickguard: that's easy for a sunburst bass. Black or brown tortoise
19. I have done a lot with my MIM fretless. It started out like this: I then had the fingerboard epoxied by a Dutch luthier: Then came the classy part: I switched the pickguard to a black one. Technically, I've replaced the pickups with Fender Custom Shop 60's pickups, which I got quite cheap. They sound so incredibly awesome! Lastly, I've replaced the bridge with a Gotoh 201. The bass now looks like this: I couldn't be happier with it. Oh wait, I can. If it had a matching headstock
