1. Help us out on this one, pictures and location please.
2. Glad to hear Tokai is going well with VBA and 7400 cab. My back is better as well . Enjoy
3. Have seen the pic, know the quality. Nice bass, if you find you don't use it....... mail me
4. I use a Tour 700 with Barefaced Big One. Really rate the sound - most of the time I use it set flat. Tuner out is useful. Sub Octaver - what were they thinking of. Graphic can be switched out so it becomes a 5 knob amp, pre & post gain, bass, treble and contour. Contour is useful. I like having the graphic for double bass use and / or dealing with difficult rooms. Weight is ok even including Gator rack case. Not the loudest thing ever with the Barefaced cab, as it's only 500W at 8 Ohms. As ever try them and see.
5. Have a bump. Don't give up the playing, scale it back with some others to do what you want. I started again last year, we are all in the same job, have the same demands, understand what we can & can't do. Its great fun, I regret the 15 or so years of not playing seriously. Super bass, I want it, but my wife will kill me. Also wanted to buy the sideboard but sadly not for sale.
6. Ah the late 70s, the days of grants at university, so I doubled my my money on a 1958 EB2 and bought a 77 precision new with some of my first grant cheque. Still owe my wife on some of that one when it caught up with me. It was a strange mixture, excellent quality parts but poorly assembled. I wrote to Fender UK, got a handbook / setup advice in return. Followed the instructions and voila an excellent bass. It had the best action I have ever had from a bass. Some of this may have been to do with the shop I bought from - no setup I guess, but I would have expected better for a premium instrument. I think Jazz basses were something like £25 extra at the time. Like all instruments there will be good ones and the rest. Current bass is a 1985 G&L SB1, for me it just does it all, and it magically stays in tune for weeks on end.. play it, put in case, bring back out & in still in tune, it is becoming a talking point in band. Have had it for 17 + years and no intention of changing.
7. No money, a few non paying charity gigs (through choice) but I have started playing again which is fun. Whether I (we) can ever get back to the 40+ per year sensible paying gigs per year of my youth remains to be seen. It's like being 18 again.. without the energy, drive and ego, but with a little more sense, experience, tolerance and ability. Sounds like see paint drying. For me the plus is playing again after a long period of not playing when life took over - job ?, ++ marks wife, ++marks daughter, --marks my stupidity. My wife's business (fashion, not music) has survived, less per person, more people buying fwiw. Moneys too tight to mention...
8. I wanted one of these so much when I was younger. It was the picture of Gerry McAvoy on a Rory Gallagher album and seeing them live. Marshall will do a re-cover at an unbelievably cheap price. An immense cab. Shame my back is stuffed with a trapped nerve. Best wishes from another bass player (also into cycling) from that part of the world, Bromyard, in my youth, many, many years ago.
9.
I HAVE A GATOR 3U FLIGHTCASE AND IM LOOKING TO SWAP A 4 U SLIMLINE!!!????
where are you, do you have a cash price +postage if needed? Thanks
10. Andy Fraser - why wasn't I that good at 17/18? Eugene Wright - Brubeck the great concerts - a 1958 - 63 set of recordings that are phenomenal Kevin Marcotte - Colin Lake and Wellbottom - Bullet album - just love that bass tone & style Can't I have more than three? I just pick bits up from most things I listen to so it must be the last three bass players I listened to today who made me think 'yep that's good in that situation'.
11.
I have to agree - I like my Tour 450 head but the sub octave on it is never used. It also does not seem to be particularly loud for a 450, when I hear these threads about people playing in loud rock bands and never needing to turn their 300W amps up beyond half, I'm normally well up to 75% on the tour 450 with a hartke 4 x 10 and a 1 x 15 cab attached.
Yes it was my Tour 700 I was alluding to - great tone with Barefaced Big One, I love it (Firebass 700 also delivers this). It is just insufficiently loud. I use the Tour 700 at full master and 50 ~ 75% preamp. I am up against a Peavey 20W valve combo and a Fender 40W valve combo! (The drummer can be a little powerful). My Marshall VBA400 and Soundcity 120 just leave Tour 700 trailing in the wake. However the Tour 700 tone is the business with my G&L. I want that tone but louder and then some. Useless amp features - Knobs that you can not see where they are quickly or on a dim / dark stage - chickenheads are the way to go. Knobs that project outside the cab / case edges - just looking for something to impact with and cause expensive damage. Numbers that have no relation to power - the Terminator 4500 which is a 45W peak power amp i.e. 22 W rms or so.
12. We decided to start a band at school and sort of chose what we would play. None of us had music lessons or tuition (and have never done so on 1st instruments to my knowledge - now I advise the kids I teach to do so - great time saver). Sax and bass were my call. Slade, Deep Purple, Mott the Hoople, Wizard, Hendrix and Steppenwolf have a lot to answer for. 38 ! years later, none of us are in same bands however all of us except one are still playing same instruments. I have played trumpet, sax and clarinet to a point, would be happy to do guitar in a band but simply prefer bass playing - and I'm much better now than I used to be (IMO), strangely a long period of not playing improved my playing - work that one out. So why am I a bass player - it just comes (super)naturally.
13.
A 4ohm 2x15? I've not wanted one of them for ages. No sir. Not at all sir. .... How much for just the cab?
Rather it all went in one go - however lets see how it develops thanks
14. Marshall VBA 400 Marshall 7215 cab 4 ohms 600W Peavey Firebass 700 (will drive to 2 Ohms) Flight case for VBA Having just spent two days off work in excruciating pain with a trapped nerve I think my days of lifting are over and I must accept I am no longer 25 ! I am looking for £620 for the whole setup or Barefaced Big One in straight swap for the whole set up Am not interested in other trades - sorry. This will give you the VBA 400 with flight case, the 2 x 15 cab and a spare backup amp should you need it. The cab is built from birch ply with comb joints unlike current vbc cabs. It has Eminence something speakers. One side has been recovered and needs a little sticking down. I had planned to fit either Eminence Kappalite 3015s or 3015LFs to it. It is about the same internal volume as a fearful 1515/66. The ports are 15cm dia x 15 cm length. With a recover this will be an excellent solid cab. Marshall 7215 Edit: cab has a loose cover of sorts. When I bought the Marshall VBA I was assured that it has been serviced and had new power amp valves in last two years. I have no reason to disbelieve this. I replaced the cooling fans in the Peavey and they run quietly. The flight case is a bit tatty and is not an exact fit - it will help protect the head though. This will have to be a pick up from Mid Wales - about 40 mins from Shrewsbury. The plus is you will be able to try it out at volume - no near neighbours. regards Francis
15. On careful examination I notice that it is missing one ? mark. Will this affect functionality? Will you be able to post it and ensure no other ? marks become detached. I think I recall seeing one of these at the Dog and Duck a few years ago.
16. Octaver on Peavey Tour. Power ratings that just don't seem to translate to loudness / headroom - I know it is about cabinets as well - but some amps do the business better irrespective of the alleged numbers.
17. Can we have Celin in our band - Damn, I'm the bass player and she has better equipment than me.
18. Many years ago I had a 1958 EB2 - bought for £80 in about 1975 - very unpopular at the time. Nicely made, light and strong but I never really got a good tight tone out of it. Short scale, floppy strings, lots of bass, not a lot of punch. RS66 rotos gave it serious fret wear in a very short time. I dropped it - it fell off the strap - and bent a tuning peg, but the headstock did not snap. My feeling is that you must give these a pretty big knock to break the headstock. Before you shell out a lot of money try one out (or a Rivoli) if you can with your kit. It may work very well with modern amps / cabs. You may like it, you may not. I did not regret trading it in for a new precision in 1977.
19. A nice blast from the past - I remember using Carlsbro Stingrays in my youth, showing my age- these will make a tidy setup for someone at a bargain price. Reliable, simple, easy to repair if it goes wrong and still going strong. If I wasn't so far away.... Hope it goes to a good home.
