Sounds like a confidence thing. Lead(!) guitarist in our old band had the same issue. Nothing he was playing was 'quite right' and I don't think he wanted to be heard at all. Not sure he was after lead, in the end...
Frustrated chasing leads, meeting a couple of times, almost getting a rehearsal sorted, only for someone to say they can't actually make it to the studio. Even more chasing up and it all goes quiet.

Was my first LBGS and I've had a great day. Highlight was Frank Bello's masterclass - seems like a great guy and his enthusiasm and passion is just contagious!
The constant slapping w***ery was a bit annoying though.
