1. Hello everyone, Up for sale is my beloved Mike Lull PJ5 from 2013. £1800. Original certificate and original Lull branded Protec Protego case included. The bass feels and sounds great. Classic P bass tone with a bit more focus due to the J pickup and the 35" scale length. I've posted a few videos of my playing with this bass on my youtube channel. Condition: This bass is in great condition. It has a little bit of missing finish and the odd small mark on the body and on the headstock. I have tried to capture these in the photos. The bass is intonated and set up very well. It's worn flats for most of its life, so fret wear is minimal. Specs: Please see the attached pdf file of the original detailed Bassdirect listing. The only difference is the addition of an Aguilar AG 5P-60CL pickup in the P position. Original custom wound pickup is included. Strung with Ken Smith burners. 3.8kg / 8lb 4 oz Location/postage: I would rather have the bass picked up, but I can look into wrapping the case in cardboard and foam. Postage and insurance at buyer's expense. *I will be in Bath over Christmas with my family. I could bring the guitar with me if you’re interested.* Other: I'm selling to fund another purchase, so please no trade offers. Any questions, please ask. Best, James
2. Bump. Contact me for more information/pictures.
3. Thanks Yeah, there are lots of the cheaper models floating around, I haven't seen many with the proper hardware.
4. I bought a bass from Hugues. I am very happy with the deal we did. Deal with confidence. Thanks Hugues!
5. Hello everyone, I'm selling my Ampeg SVPCL preamp. It's not heavy - 4kg. Fully functional, fully tube preamp, based on the 70s SVT circuit, with added options with the addition of the preset filter switch. The previous owner installed a set of new JJ tubes at the end of 2016. I've gigged it twice and has been in a rack case the entire time. I've mainly been using it to record at home. Nice warm but accurate sound. You can see/hear it in action here: https://www.youtube....h?v=LwdjfNtCl0k I can ship it in a Thomann 3u Multiflex module 45 rack case with front and back lids is also for sale. Good condition, £90 with the front and back lids. Pickup, or postage at buyer's expense. Ready to ship! 6,99€ within Germany (without the Thon case) The preamp is located in Essen, Germany. Any questions, please let me know. No trades Thanks, James Also for sale: Tokai Jazz Sound TJB-60 Thomann 3u Multiflex module 45 rack case with front and back lids
6. I gig my double bass all the time without even considering that it's worth more than all but the most rare of early 60s basses. It's also a lot more fragile. Fender basses are pretty solid things. They're called instruments for a reason, they're meant to be used. And you can always call the insurance company if something does happen. Just be sensible and enjoy it, that's my vibe!
7.
Apart from snobbishness, this above would be the reason if reading a new piece. For learning covers, a TAB is perfectly fine because you know the rhythm and where the notes go from listening to the song.
So you can easily recognize rhythm, but not pitch? Why should one be easier than the other?
8. https://youtu.be/4X7qgBVnMfY Seen this? I don't like tab, except when you want to demonstrate a particular fingering pattern. Even then I prefer Chuck Rainey's method of 1A . 1A means play the note with the first finger on the A string, but you have to look at the notation to see what the note is. This note could be any fret, it is not necessarily Bb. Check it out in Rainey's "The Method".
9. I used to like the sound of SWR and had a couple of their amps and speakers including a Goliath III which sounded great but was about 45kg. I very much like the SWR sound in isolation. However, I recently set up two stages for a band festival and I had to sound check the bass amps that we'd provided from the music school. We had an SWR super redhead and a Markbass CMD 102p combo. The Markbass sounded much fuller and felt like it had more power on tap than the SWR. If I had looked at the schedule for where I was playing, I would have put the Markbass on my stage as it sounded a lot better to my ears. And the Markbass was far easier to move around than the heavy redhead. The redhead wasn't bad but I think the Markbass had it covered.
10. Just record your tunes and send them to him.
11.
On a Squier Jaguar V?
No on a totally different bass. It's extremely mild problem, I doubt anyone would notice it, but still it would be nice to sort it out.
12. Let me know what the solution is, I have this problem too and I've also tried everything!
13. http://www.ampeg.com/products/classic/v4b/ (18kgs) Lovely sounding head. New they're around a grand, second hand, less. Not crazy loud, but a beautiful sound to my ear.
14.
How about a Genz Benz 3.0-8T its not a tilt back but that's easily solved.
The 10t was tilt back. I wouldn't go for the 8, but the 10t was a lovely sounding combo. I regret selling mine.
15. **The time is everyone's responsibility.** Listen to some albums that don't have drums to get your ears used to the space. My examples would be Angel Song by Kenny Wheeler (Dave Holland on bass) Beyond the Missouri Sky by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden.
16.
On Monday this week I had a short notice dep call to hold down the bass on a jam session so I brought a small rig consisting of mesa boogie Walkabout head and 2x10 powerhouse cab. Later on a band came up to do a set and had an acoustic bass guitar which I plugged into my bass rig and eq'd it so that it wasn't too loud or too bassy and turned the tweeter to it's minimum setting as I know these things seem to kick out a heft of a signal. My parting words were don't turn anything and don't blow up my cab! Anyway as their songs went on I had to keep walking back to the stage to turn down the volume then bottom end and upper mids as it sounded raspy ( he was using a pick). On the one occasion I saw him turning up the volume between songs I went over reset it below where I originally had it and stood behind him for the remainder of the set. I'm not going to do that again. In future any acoustic bass players will have to go through the P.A. or bring their own amp. Any advice for me using that setup for myself in the future. Is it a good idea to use a regular bass rig for acoustic bass guitars or would I be better off with a dedicated acoustic bass guitar amp. As an aside at home I use my PJB Briefcase and that's ok at the volume levels I use and in theory on the right gig I could DI out from it into the P.A. but what about those in between gigs that the PJB is too small or those where there is no PA and the bass has to fill the room. Any experienced advice would be grateful.
If you're not comfortable with other people playing your gear, just say they can't or let the venue know you'll need them to supply a combo or something adequate. I personally wouldn't take kindly to someone telling me not to change anything, and turning me down between songs. If their bass tone wasn't good, then that's their problem not yours, unless he asked you for an opinion of what it sounded like out front. If the acoustic bass guitar has a good pickup which doesn't feed back too readily, then it shouldn't be any problem to put through a bass rig, same rules as bass guitar and double bass apply.
17. Just buy a second hand one. There's always one on here sonewhere.
18. No directly related but oerhaps worth a thought: The B can be harder to intonate if you don't play it sympathetically. I found that (like an E on double bass) i had to work to get a clear and defined sound with the B.
19. I have the CL version of the Aguilar 5P-60. It's a really nice pickup- enjoy!
20.
Anthony Jackson. It don't get any better musically wise.
Word
21. If we're talking about that kind of money and they're going to make simple errors like 'there' instead of 'their', I would go elsewhere. Edit: maybe I'm being a bit harsh here. Where are you based? There's a thread on here of amp techs that people have recommended, maybe you could find an independent professional to take a look at it. It could be a lot quicker and cheaper.
22. I find comparing preamps only really doesn't give you a proper picture of how the amp will actually perform for their intended purpose- on a gig.
