[/quote] A very good call, Conan - and, of course, as more knowledgeable posters than me have commented, there are lot of other factors involved in producing your sound. The woods involved; the playing; the amp; the room; etc! So, maybe it's best for me just to confess that this is just my subjective opinion - but I quite like them. When I did my Shuker course I elected to go with Barts - and I think (totally subjective, and you'll have to bear with my choice of words) that they sound quite, well, [i]dark[/i]

Sorry, I was probably a bit rude - it just can be frustrating fending off assumptions that these [i]must[/i] be poor copies, because of their origin; I think they're extremely practical basses, giving you a decent stab at the looks and some fine playing and sounds in their own right. Ok, so you might still prefer the original - but it's horses for courses. The offer stands - not least as I have another arriving - if you're nearby you're welcome to try one

Plenty of access to a wide variety of instruments, and a ready (well, ready-ish - it's a recession, don't you know?) market if we decide not to keep them. I've gone through a few in my time; all have gone to good homes since; and some have moved on again. I may well get some of them back at this rate

And, of course, with such a big site we find we have a mix of people - and some are still learning, neatly explaining why the old debates never seem to go away; it's because they're always new to someone Still, we do what we can - and I think, on the whole, we all do a good job of calling issues out and talking them through

The later ones are pretty bloody good; though the Mk1s, with the huge neck, may be an acquired taste for many. If you're ever in York, you're welcome to stop by and try I will disagree with many, however - Ric, themselves, don't need a budget brand. Their business works fine as is, despite the efforts of John Hall. The Rockinbetters work fine for the NPR modest of pocket - or those like me, with a bit of kitsch affection for an item of such controversy.

Depends on genre. You can find simplicity and complexity in all ages, should you wish.

Strange, but all manufacturers will have issues from time to time - no one, big or small, has yet achieved perfection. Glad you got it sorted. I'm fond of both of mine, so I hope you enjoy it
