Would you really give a sh*te about my opinion?

There was a lovely blue one on here, which could be the one mentioned above - I lusted after it, as I do with so many basses, but held onto my pennies. £650 is steep, but second-hand they seem to go for c.£350, which is much more appealing. As an upgrade to the standard P, the presence of the extra pick-up will fill out the sound nicely - I've got three P/J combos, albeit not Fenders, and love them for the versatility. I'm sure the active will give it a kick in the arse too
A few questions to clear up some stuff not apparent from the original post: 1. Have you charged money for doing this recording? 2. Are all the problems with the recording all down to the playing/performances of the musicians and none are with the technical aspects of the recording? If it's simply that the musicians didn't play particularly well, did you not notice at the time of making the recording? I've been doing home recording myself since the mid-70s, but these days I prefer to go into a studio for two main reasons (other than to have a good acoustic space to record drums properly). Firstly I've found that I play much better if all I have to do is concentrate on the playing. Secondly I expect the person recording me to say when my performance isn't up to scratch so I can go back and do another take until it is. I don't know the full story behind your recording session because I wasn't there, but as a musician I would expect the person recording me to let me know if my playing wasn't as good as it could be, so I could do something about it at the time. Fixing a couple of timing errors after the recording is to be expected, but it shouldn't be more than a couple, otherwise you're always better off going for another take. As for tuning your always better getting it right at the moment of recording rather than trying to fix it in the mix.
Some good points. I think I'd read it as sitting in on a rehearsal with his 4-track!
Just give them a copy and let them judge for themselves.
You can't polish a turd, so don't even try to. Let them have a copy, and judge for themselves. Unless you were being asked to produce or mix the tracks, I think you've fulfilled all your obligations. Just drop your mate a line to express some of your thoughts and let them hear for themselves; perhaps suggest some next steps.

If it is the runaround, put it on here - I think it will recoup costs.

Ain't it grand when rehearsals go well and productively
Last night we discussed investing in a band biscuit barrel - mind they never normally last that long
What? Bands? Or Biscuit barrels? We've really ramped up the discipline for ours - quick chat and catch-up on the way, including summarising how we've all got on with our homework; warm-up with some trusty songs; work on new riffs, ideas and alterations; set list including recording (we record the whole session for later playback); and then finish with a couple of fun ones, including full stage antics (yeah, sad, we practice looking rock too). -
As above, I'm not sure how valid the Big Al comparison is. If you're buying a Jag, wouldn't you also be shopping around comparable Jazz and Precision basses? The Big Al is a cut above, I'm sure - and I remember chatting to a forum member on here about acquiring his - but it's £1400 or more, and I'm not sure how many times you'd want to take it out in some sweaty pub. The Jag, at £500-ish, gives you some options. And if you're not happy with it, then I suspect you're falling back to your P or J options. There's one on Ebay now, black-with-white, £600 starting bid and £800 BIN. Headstock looks like it sank on the Titanic, however.

Would tough love work? If so: man up. I summarise: great looks; great weight; great neck; great price; not real. Some things are too good to be true, but I think you've done well here. Swap for a Rolex?
-
Yes; but, to reiterate, you only paid 250 euro for it. It's like that time I bought a Rolex for £20. Except I think you'll enjoy this a lot more If you're after a real Ric, then start saving - and if you can't abide a fake, then what better way to commence saving than either asking for a refund or finding a buyer on here. It looks great, I doubt you'd have any shortage of suitors.

1981, thus revealing my relative youth! It would have to be this, for me - rocky; pointy; laden with gadgetry I'll never understand - a bit like most of my life, to-date
I guess you'll be safest if you never buy or sell on the internet then. Unless "they" are reading your thoughts!!
I'm trying, and let me tell you - I hope your mother doesn't know you have such thoughts! -
NOW WITHDRAWN: Lakland DJ4 For Sale or swap
Gust0o replied to Champion Badger's topic in Basses For Sale
Is that in the middle pic, running over an inlay? Would be good to know. I have a Skyline DJ4, and it really is a stunning bass - heavier than a comparable Fender, but with the solidity comes the tone; much better to these ears. Pity bonus time isn't soon enough, but this is a lovely looking bass and should make someone very happy. -
I entirely agree with keeping as much history as possible, but not for this ( ^ ) reason! Values change over time. Recently, and for very obvious reasons, the trend has been downwards. In future at some point, that trend will reverse and will become upwards. What someone paid for a pre-owned 2004 Warwick FNA in May 2008 (for example) is of very little relevance in March 2011. More importantly, what someone has just paid for that same bass in March 2011, at rock bottom in the worst financial crisis in living memory, will be highly misleading in three years' time when things are recovering. If you're offered a high-quality bass for £500 this week because the seller is bone skint and needs the cash right now, why should that leave you open to accusations of profiteering in 2014 when you sell it on for £750?
I'm entirely in agreement with Happy Jack, as I suspect one of the key bits of 'useful' information people are finding missing is price - which I think leads us on to the other great debate of the For Sale section, which is whether one should seek additional value in our dealings or not. The market is the market, and a bass is ultimately worth what someone is prepared to pay for it - and I strongly disagree with the law of diminishing returns which some members feel should apply; a law which neatly avoids the current bouyancy of 'vintage' Fender prices, seemingly despite the physical condition of what was a relatively cheap instrument at the original point of sale. Sure, it's an absurd example - but then it's absurd to expect value to remain static, and for the market not to adapt or fluctuate. I'd happily make some recommendations for the For Sale section: - Completed listings marked as 'SOLD' or 'TRADED' - Mandatory donations for listings (possibly a set level of a percentage - even 1% would help BC, I suspect) - The use of templates to help regulate consistency in listings and information -
I'll admit, I have Gibsons, Ernie Balls and Rickenbackers on a podium - a podium with a plaque which reads "Proper Basses". I can do this as I've never played any of them, but have seen my idols do so. I suspect it's one of those things. When I own one, and can take it down from said podium, I may well end up wondering what I ever saw in it, so high are my expectations.

What about a US MTD? Surprised to see them not making the list of possibles.
