1. Well I think we all know that ability has very rarely anything to do with earnings. If you're looking for the highest earning bass player, then I suspect crazykiwi has hit the nail on the head. EDIT: But I think monetary earnings is only one side of things. I suspect Victor Wooten is more than happy with his life and the fact he can play what he wants pretty much with whoever he wants
2. Seems I've heard Me'shell Ndegeocello before and not realised, but thanks to bubinga5 for highlighting her music, I bought a couple of her albums and am listening to Peace Beyond Passion as I type this - nice. Good stuff, I'm always into broadening my musical palette

4. Easy enough, I'll stick with Wal Custom.
5. Some nice grooves. Thanks for posting.
6. Well I said it before, so I'll say it again, that's one hell of a bass for that price. I would definitely have snapped your hand off for that if you weren't so far away. Anyway I'm sure this will go super quick.
7.
If you have to/want to play something and you struggle physically you soon find out how important technique is. The whole point of developing your technique is so that you don't have to worry about anything. Having good technique will not hinder you,it will just make the job a lot easier.
Yeah what he said ! But would like to add that I believe technique is neither more or less important than musicality - to my mind the two things go hand in hand. You want the technique to be spot on, so as Doddy says above, you don't have to worry about anything and the lack of technique won't hinder you, but technique without the musical side of things is a little pointless (yes, those guys who slap bass at a 100 notes per second without sounded particularily good I'm look at you ).
8.
... whereas the Wal is more like a quality step up from Fender with superior electronics. Waits for bricks from the Wal devotees ....
Very mischievous Don't worry, I won't be throwing bricks as I tend to find this whole is X better than Y or is X worth this much a little pointless in the long run as it's such a subjective thing. I think there's always been a heirarchy of what's considered the best quality bass and Alembic has always been at the top of that, with the young pretender Fodera now pushing at their heels. It's true that when I bought my Wal (well my Dad bought it for me - bless him) back in the early 80's a Wal was comparable in price to a Jaydee or even a BC Rich Mockingbird (as that pointy bass was one of my first loves and I almost got it instead of my Wal), even then the Alembics were far more expensive. Wal's weren't really seen as exotic or anything yet they were in many ways the bass of the 80's with numerous bassist in high profile bands using them. The bolt on neck of the Wal was often seen as lower quality than the thru-necks, the design of the MKI was very basic and conservative compared to the exotica of the Alembics and the neck profile was loved and loathed in equal amounts. You either like them or you don't. What I will say is that I personally haven't yet come across a bass that matched my Wal custom for sheer playability, versatility and pure beautiful sound and the fact that to this very day I regret more than anything that I never bought the Wal Custom fretless that sat next to my fretted in a guitar shop in Bradford, says the effect Wal's have had on me. I'd love an Alembic Stanley Clarke and/or a Fodera Imperial but if you asked me to swap my Wal custom for either (EDIT: or both) I'd simply say "no thanks" (EDIT: of course there could be a large sentimental reason as well as to why I wouldn't get rid of my Wal ).
9. One thing I really love is a latin groove, so time for Santana or how's about a classic clip from Woodstock Maybe some Tito Puente
10. I'm a great admirer of Mark King's playing. As for the comments about MK playing in other people's bands or on other people's music... I've no doubt he could play in many different bands and in a variety of musical styles, but why would he ? I mean Level42/Mark King are close enough to the same thing. He gets to do whatever he wants in that band. I'm not certain what the attraction there would be for him to play in other bands. On top of that, the style that people most associate with MK is such that it might be difficult to fit into other bands. In which case why would on earth would you want to hire MK to play in your band if you intended to get him to play in a different style.
11. 1. Led Zeppelin (small prob. I don't do keys particularily well). 2. Jimi Hendrix 3. Lynryd Skynyrd 4. Jefferson Airplane It's funny though, the way I play bass is absolutely nothing like the bassist in any of those bands but I can imagine it being one hell of an experience being with any of them. EDIT: Ooo, I almost forgot I would loved to have played music with Carlos Santana (in his earlier days) and if I had the ability - John McLaughlin an the Mahavishnu Orchestra (but as I don't that's a non-starter).
12.
Fixed it for ya...
Thanks
13. Damn, sorry guys - I was in the wrong thread. Just seen the title on this thread and you're spot on mate - there can never be enough threads on Level 42, the great Mark King and may I also suggest Rush as they are one of my all time fav. bands. I wonder what happened to Triumph the Rush-lite of their time - I need to go google, but keep up the good thread on Level 42. Did I also say I saw Level 42 back in their heyday at Leeds Uni. top class act. Anyway, back to googling for Triumph EDIT: I'm back from a little google and look what I found - one for the bassists (not quite Mark King or Geddy Lee but nice white Jazz, fits in well with the white flairs). Now off to find this Rush42 - they sound the bee's knee's.
14. Sunburst finishes should be outlawed ! I am in the right thread, right ?
15.
After a years wait it finaly arrived!! freshly built from paul herman
That's absolutely fantastic. I hope my 5-string (on order) looks that good.
16. That's a really unique look, 28 fret markers - some neck as well. Really lovely looking bass.
17. I would say a bad bassist is one who's timing it poor and/or who doesn't listen. So that'd probably be me To ellaborate slightly, in some genre's of music playing a root, chugging along is 100% what's required, some types of music playing a lot of notes is what required, imo neither type of bass player are bad, but if their timing's off or they don't listen to the music around them to help them make the right note choices within then they I'd say they're bad. EDIT: Grammar checker please
18.
Hi. I am a drummer who has just acquired some quality basses, sadly due to a bereavement. They are
Sorry to read the circumstances of you aquiring these beautiful instruments. Good luck with the sale(s). The Wal & Jaydee's are fantastic.
19. I don't often watch the show, but turned on to see Jamiroquai, first song was okay (the best I can say) and deeper underground probably one of my least favourite Jamiroquai tracks. I thought every single band on the show were at best bland, at worst just plain boring. Shame
20.
And that Shuker has now gone to fund a Wood&Tronics situation.... Oh lordy when will this end :S Bump for a good bass and good bloke
it's a never ending cycle
21. This has been a very interesting read. I have no interest in playing in "other peoples" bands at the moment as I liked to do my own things and so I sympathise with the OP in his quest to find a suitable band. I absolutely agree that an audition is just like a job interview, you obviously have to be prepared to bend to the requirements of the job and obviously need to make sure it suits your requirements also. A band is no different. Wolverinebass, if you stated clearly that you'd want to interpret the music your own way then these bands shouldn't have even entertained you if they weren't prepared to allow you to do your own thing, this said when joining a band with existing material, you have to expect that they're going to generally want things played the same way (or near enough) as written - it's a two way thing. As others have said, I think maybe you need to look for different types of bands or try and start your own to allow you to be the person who dictates what you play. Obviously it's hard work starting your own band, but it may be worth the effort to do something you want to do.
22.
Previous seller sold this for £600 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=85934
Wow, that was one hell of a good deal.
23.

Very VERY nice. Is that an amboina top ? Gorgeous maple neck and those black beauties really help show it off - Sorry starting to sound like someone who needs a cold shower Anyway, very nice.
