1. "Who influences your tone?" Ian Waller/Pete Stevens primarily. However if I were to get a bass custom made for me and somebody said who/what do you most want to sound like, I'd say I want the modern clean sound of Stanley Clarke, with the ability to get a deeper funk tone of Marcus Miller plus the ability to get the lighter soloing tone of Tony Grey. Maybe one day I'll ask Martin Peterson to make me a Sei that can do all these things EDIT: Did the title of this thread change to include "which players do you sound like" ? If so, then I doubt I sound like anyone else, you might hear my influences (see another thread on those) but I do not have the sound or technique or ability of any of my influences, so I doubt I sound like them.
2. Very nice indeed ! Shame I'm a pauper at the moment.
3.
For guys like me in their '50's, Badge by Cream is a nice one.
Not Sunshine of your love ? EDIT: Then again it's played in unison with the guitar maybe peope wouldn't even notice the bass, so you may well be right EDIT2: If you're a certain age - MC Hammer's Can't touch this is pretty recognisable
4. Oh come on ! I've been wanting a stick for years and now one appears when I'm totally skint, just typical. Ah well have a bump from me.
5. Well being that Bernard Edwards bassline for Chic's "Good Times" also appears in Michelle Gayles "Happy Just to be with You", The Sugar Hill Gangs "Rapper's Delight", Will Smith's "It's all good", Beverley Knight's "Made it Back" and I think all were pretty big sellers - then this is THE bass line everyone probably recognises most (musicians and the general listener). EDIT: Even has it's own wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Times_(Chic_song) EDIT2: Oh and for people with no interest in music it's got to be that small fragmant of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain, solely because it's the F1 theme
6. Whoops, accidentally deleted my reply to this. Anyway, I thought (as always) fantastic playing and I loved the vibe.
7. I don't think I have time to read the whole thread, but what a very strange attitude from the OP. There happens to be a recession at the moment, so people are less inclined to buy than say two years ago, I see the same problem with instruments on ebay, I'm watching a couple of lovely instruments at the moment that I'd love to buy but cannot afford to take the chance on spending money I might be in desperate need of in a couple of months if work dries up. For the record neither instrument even got a bid when they were last listed. Is it possible you're trying to sell something nobody wants or at a price nobody's prepared to pay.
8. I had hoped to come along to last years bash but in the end couldn't make it. So I'm going to say, I hope to be at this years bash.
9. I always find it so interesting how polarised views can become regarding some people. Janek seems to be one of those musicians who has such an affect on people. I have all his albums to date (awaiting the latest) and this includes his official bootleg albums and I think there are fair comments from both sides of the argument. I personally very much like the groove that Janek has, I love his choice of notes and think he's extremely talented, but equally I can see/hear aspects of what silddx is saying. I do feel Janek has a great tone and does have a distinctive voice (and ofcourse this is all subjective), but musically I do find some of his stuff feels more like a base for soloing over than memorable tunes. I don't feel he's particularily pushing any new boundaries but then not everyone can be a Jaco or Stanley Clarke , In my opinion, what he does, he does well, but if he's not everyone's choice then so bit it. I don't want to like the same music as everyone else EDIT: for some reason I keep typing don;t instead of don't - so fixed it
10. I once turned up to do a "charity gig". The gig was about 50/60 minutes from where I lived (so not as far as yours). I was unemployed at the time but was just happy to get to play. Well, we were last on and all the preceeding acts overran so much that we didn't even get on stage in the end. To say we were not happy was an understatement. But I suppose those are the pitfulls when people don't have to pay you. Had I sent the charity a tenner, I'd have still saved more money by not going to the gig and probably had more fun (as it was a pretty crappy working men's club with some goddamn awful acts - us included ). I think for 3 songs, unless I was quite committed to helping the charity out, had the money and time to waste or felt it would be a good move from the exposure point of view (etc.) I wouldn't bother. But hey, I'm old and lazy now, so take my view with a pinch of salt
11. Looks awesome ! Now I have enough trouble getting to the low notes on my 8 string, you must be a contortionist to get to those notes on the F# string
12. As long as it's not sunburst I'm happy Okay in truth I prefer natural wood, it doesn't tend to show dings as easily as painted, it doesn't tend to fade in a way that looks old and dirty (in my opinion) but also I love the individuality of wood grain. I also tend to like the natural look of things. This all said I do have a white Jaydee on order, so I'm not an exclusive wood finish kinda guy EDIT: Just thought though, interestingly (well not really) I would never want a natural precision (if indeed I ever wanted a precision) that would just seem wrong - but I don't know why.
13. Stanley Clarke Geddy Lee Jonas Hellborg And unfortunately I can neither play like them or sound like them, but I often hear bits in my playing that I could attribute to all three.
14.
You should see me on a 4 string!! I keep thinking the E is the B or F# and my brain gets confuzzled just the same!
15. I have a couple of 7's and a lovely 8 string (extended range bass). The reason I bought them is I'm a boring old git who prefers his own company to that of a band, so I wanted something that allowed me to play over a much greater range. Mine are also extended in the upper registers, unlike what you're looking to do. For me a low B is often superfluous to be honest, but does make a good thumb anchor . I doubt I'd have the balls to gig with any of these personally because I've not got the greatest levels of concentration and (especially on the 8 string) find myself occasionally lost when playing them (i.e. don't know what string I'm on ) whereas the 4-6 strings are not so much of a problem. Also I don't have the largest hands and obviously the necks are pretty wide This all said, I do love the 8 string a lot and even though the neck is very wide it's shallow and for the most part fairly easy to play. So pro's are greater extended range and I suppose con's are wide neck which (if you have small-ish hands) can become tiring. Anyway good luck with your build.
16.

I want some ! They'd look great with my orange fretless
17. Congrats. not only does it look good but that's a really great sound. Fantastic job.
18. There are lots of different scales - checkout http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php on the right is a list of scales (some better known than others). Have fun with those I'm not as well qualified as others on this site (I basically taught myself theory by reading books and writing literally hundreds of rolodex types cards out to show me scales, the intervals the notes etc). But what I'd suggest is that you start of with the major scale and then look into modes. From practising these you'll learn to hear what different sounds are like when combined as well as improve your technique etc. Once you feel confident playing the major scale and the modes, then I'd suggest moving onto chord theory (at least at a basic level of understanding) and then branch out into the wide world of the more exotic scales. As Doddy mentioned, don't look at this as solely bass oriented, music theory is music theory whatever instrument you are using. Good luck
19. Sorry to hear about your redundancy. I'm sorry but I'm going to repeat something I wrote on a previous, similar thread. Bass guitars do not generally offer a good return on your investment. Certainly not in the long term, unless... 1. You can get an old Fender (and I'm no expert of Fenders so don't ask me which model or which year ) at a really good price or 2. If you come by some very special bass, i.e. the equivalent of a Hendrix strat. again at a good price, then there's potential for making some good profits from the sale. 3. Or finally if you can find a make (like a Wal) that you can pick up at a good price now, that has relatively small production runs and that will become highly sought after in 10 years time - and no, I don't have the answer to which instrument might match this criteria sadly Ofcourse the other alternative is simply buying and selling instruments, i.e. picking up a bass (any bass) for a price lower than you think you can sell it, then selling it asap to make a small return quickly. Problem with this is that you need to know what's a good price and what's going to sell and in the current climate it might not be so easy to offload. Obviously the longer you're stuck with an instrument which isn't appreciating in price the less your profits over time. (Disclaimer: I am not an investment expert so everything I've said could be rubbish ).
20. This is an absolute beauty. I would absolutely love to buy this off you, but unfortunately no funds at the moment - so the best I can say is good luck with the sale.
21. Wow ! Great job. Really is looking good.
22. I like the shape on the Monarch but I'm not mad on the whole Yin Yang look, it's a little pretentious to me (obviously VW can get away with it, but I don't feel I could ). But each to their own.
23. One word - Wow ! The holly looks amazing.
