  1. Still agonising over selling my USA '62 reissue rosewood board TCSB Precision. I bought it a while back' partly based on the emotional aspects of recalling the original(stolen) '62 I used to own, partly because I was in a '60's rock and roll band. Singer died earlier this year and the band doesn't play without him, so it just sits there in its case. Seems a shame that such a nice bass doesn't get played anymore but my #1 is all I play these days. Decisions decisions....
  2. Small world. Matthew is an old mate of mine from his Cambridge days!
  3. Doesnt show the hard case included on the ebay 399 listing but does on gak online 499 listing... Are you guys who bought getting a case as well for 399?
  4. Remember reading his stuff from time to time and then it all seemed like it disappeared. I know his blog was on wordpress but cant be arsed to wade through reams of stuff if he has indeed given up. Shame if he eventually failed, as he seemed like a diligent, hard-working bloke.
  5. Did one of these years ago in the seventies when I was in a Country Rock originals band. Lord knows why the agent booked us for it, but we wound up driving through a snow storm to this RAF camp and played to the two couples who actually sat down to dine. All rather sad, but we got paid and were allowed to leave when the four punters had gone. Back on topic: Last gig (Thursday so a bit late) was at the Flying Pig, a tiny pub in Cambridge. Absolutely crammed & I was in the mood to do more Gulf Coast country boogie than usual... went down great, even when I switched to motown halfway through the second set. What was really nice was that along with my usual rhythm players we had Chris Newman late of the Climax Blues Band on second guitar! A lovely player. Cant believe how much fun and how little money we are getting from these gigs.
  6. My kid brother Brian works a lot of biker bars in central florida. Says most of them are a fun gig. AND they get paid on the night in $$$$
  7. I also recommend nylon ones, either herco or dunlop. I use 1mm mostly, but hold the pick with 2 fingers and thumb, which adds controllable rigidity once you get used to it.
  8. Kevsy is right. I cant remember when the L series came in - I thought it was in the seventies - but certainly my 62 didn't have an L. Wish I had a note of the serial number, as it was stolen twice in the 1960s and never surfaced again after the last theft.
  9. THis IS hard. I havent chosen any of the names I have been billed under recently. All came from various other people, but last night's took the biscuit. Skivin' Ivan and the Slackers. Turned up at the gig and there it was outside - first I knew about it. Blaming our drummer for that one.
  10. The average punter doesnt care how much of a virtuoso you are. Its all down to right music right place right time AND a slice of luck plus a lot of promotional push from somewhere. The fun part is that now the emphasis on music is so reduced, people find their new favourites in strange places compared to earlier times. Video games, films and TV shows, adverts... Hard to know where to pitch yourself, isnt it?
  11. I love this site - "P1$$" gets changed to "Fosters"!!!!
  12. Pro player = he probably couldnt afford to buy a set at the time. Been there.
  13. Unless you are one of those seriously-up-yourselves pomp rock bands, you are first and foremost entertainers if you are playing to an audience. Either that or you are background music. Up to you to decide which camp you want to be in. I have always been of the "nobody sleeps when I`m on" school because that is where I feel comfortable and have the most fun. And as for guitarists being glued to a pedalboard and mic stand, no need. I never have been, although sometimes getting back to the mic stand for the vocal has been a bit of a scramble.... adds to the visual entertainment!
  14. Experience. 63 years of it playing paying gigs. And these days eccentricity. I dont really play bass much "out" these days, since the singer in my rock and roll band died. I have recently found a new niche singing and playing guitar. Most of my songs are either MY songs or stuff hardly anyone knows, but they go down pretty well because I relentlessly take the fosters out of the band, the audience and myself. Its great to be old - sometimes....
  15. Think I have mentioned this before, but back when I was playing a Rick with a pick I would break at least one string every gig, often two or even three. I don't break strings any more now that I play with my fingers & am back on a P Bass though. I used to have a photo of me picking the A string so hard it was pulled right across over both the D and the G string prior to me letting it go.... Ouch! Unfortunately my girlfriend at the time (another bass player) begged the only copy of the photo and lost it when her first marriage broke up.
  16. I suspect this aint the first time he played this.....
  17. AND FWIW HIS PEAVEY SIGNATURE BASS (THE pALLADEUM) IS THE ONLY pEAVEY BASS i HAVE EVER ACTUALLY LIKED PLAYING & WAS STUPID ENOUGH NOT TO BUY ONE WHEN THEY WERE EASILY AVAILABLE. Apologies for caps but I hit capslock and not going to retype
  18. Liked what the band did but have been somewhat underwhelmed by Stings solo efforts, but he IS a great bass player and can write a good melody.
  19. Yeah - just couldnt resist the temptation to respond as I did though... FWIW I fell over backwards onto a small tree stump (about 6" high 3" in diameter) a couple of days ago whilst trying to pull up another stump beside it. I am shambling around like some old fogey due to the bruising, fortunately NOT broken backbone or ribs. But I have 2 gigs on Sunday and another on Thursday, all of which I am also providing the (admittedly fairly small) PA. Ouch!
  20. the Band Ry Cooder Little FeatThe Neville Brothers Booker T ..... D`you see where this is going? (grin)
  21. Heh - If I ever decide to sell mine....1963 USA reissue dressed exactly as you describe. Iwas playing one of the originals at the same time as Jamerson got his. Unfortunately mine wound up getting stolen, like Jamerson`s, from the guy I sold it to in 1963 or 4....
  22. Not sure how I missed this one. First gig was aged ten with the Johnny Vesper Jazzmen (sic!) in Edgware near the station, in a Church of England Hall with TRVTH over the front door. Still there. It was a jewish wedding reception and we got I think ten shillings between six of us. First bass gig would have been some time in 1962/3 when I switched from guitar to bass so that Bubs White (Bonzos, Big Grunt, etc) could take over lead guitar in our band The Sundowners at the time. Probably one of the many youth club gigs or one of the ballrooms & civic halls in the Cambridge area. Like someone said you always remember the very first one... by the time we moved from London to Cambridge I had been gigging for 6 years.
