1. Matthew was a good friend, an absolute gentleman and brilliant musician. But at first, he was a bass hero of mine. Hearing "Screen Kiss" and "Mulu" from Thomas Dolby's "The Flat Earth" was a game changer for me. You could use fretless bass in a left field pop record, and make it really interesting and dominant. For me Mick Karn, Pino Palladino and Matthew were my big pop fretless bass influences. We made an album together released in 2017. Myself and Matthew on basses accompanied by guitarist Jon Klein (Siouxsie & The Banshees), keyboardist Paul Smyth (Birds Through Fire), Bruce Woolley (Theremin) and David Bridie (Australian band Not Drowning, Waving) on vocals. You can hear the album here. Neon Sisters - Monoplane https://neonsisters.bandcamp.com/releases Play on dear Matthew.
2. Thank you SpondonBassed. I am technically the only Aussie in the band, with Paul Smyth (ex UK ) being based in Oz for the past 20 years. Interesting that you can hear an Australian sound, no one has commented previously, but it's nice to know that it permeates the music
3. Being a fretless player, and growing up in the 1980's in Australia, I was attracted to the playing styles and music of mostly UK players. Mick Karn (Japan), Pino Palladino (Gary Numan/Paul/Young etc), Paul Webb (Talk Talk), Robert Bell (The Blue Nile), Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) and the critically overlooked Matthew Seligman (Thomas Dolby,David Bowie etc). Over the years I became friends with Matthew, and we talked about the possibility of doing an album with 2 bass players. Not in a "you solo, I'll hold down the low end" kind of way, but 2 bassists weaving their lines through songs. Well...we did it Our debut album is called "Monoplane" under the moniker "Neon Sisters". The band name is taken from the Thomas Dolby song. We have Jon Klein (Siouxsie & The Banshees) on guitar, and Paul Smyth (Birds Through Fire) on keyboards and treatments. A guest vocal by David Bridie, but most lead vocals are by yours truly The album has been described as “classic electro atmosphere slightly goth pop"...... To hear/purcahse the album, please go to...... https://neonsisters.bandcamp.com/album/monoplane And remember......"BASS...the final frontier"
4. There are ways of getting an instrument into the UK without paying high VAT prices.
5. Price drop to $6500 AUD = £3059 BPD
6. Forgot to say it's strung up with new Ernie Ball slinky 45-105....... This bass has been primarily a " studio only " instrument for over 2 decades. It absolutely barks like a dog. The reason for parting with it is that most of my studio work is now done with my trusty ol' 62 Jazz Bass and my Wal MK1 fretless.
7. Steady on there BB2000 She's a beauty !
