1. In what context are you playing them? Bedroom? Gigs? etc Because in my experience, a bass that feels and sounds great in one of the above situations doesn't mean it is the same in the other situation! Si
2. Ahhh, the E2 is still on the Akai website! Must be the E1 that is discontinued! Oh well, it'll stop being made one day lol Si
3. This has nothing to do with want you want to play or what your guitarist want you to play (or rather it shouldn't), it's got to do with what the song NEEDS. If a particular section requires a unison riff to sound heavy, then one shouldn't deviate it because you will lose that 'oomf'. What I do if i can't figure out a decent line for a section that requires a bit more movement or harmonic content is to simply hum what I think would sound cool, then move that onto the bass. The best one guitar metal band I can think of to listen for ideas is Mudvayne, Ryan is a monster player, knows when to fill sonic space and knows when to just kick back and riff with the guitar! +1 for uploading the guitar riffs here though! Si
4.
This pedal as an investment is a good one - they will only rise in value.
Sorry to go off track slightly but.......you think this toasted? I have one that's still in its box and with manual etc....great pedal really, so interesting to see that It might be a collectable or something in a number of years time! Good luck with the sale! Si
5. Yeah mate, try as many different basses as you can! Then when you've found a make/model you like....buy it second hand! SSOOOOOO much second hand bass for £1000, you see Sei Jazzes go for like £950 Si
6. My Shuker EUB has been part of an ongoing 'rationalisation' for some time now, and I think my Lakland will join it soon when my new Jazz arrives. Here's to helping unused gear get the use it deserves by other people Si
7. So no-one has emailed Epifani yet then? Si
8. So Tony Grey is with Yamaha, not Fodera, but often plays a Fodera, that pesky Tony Grey !? Si
9. Just figure out some of the vocal melodies and have some fun with them! Always a good way of starting! Jaco used to advocate learning the main melodies of any song he was playing! Si
10.
No, it's a bassist called Tony Grey. I think he often plays a Fodera.
Oh right, sorry, I thought you said he played a Fodera......this elusive Tony Grey Si
11. So it's Tony Grey and he plays a Fodera?! Si
12. I loved the way that a couple of members were like "learn arpeggios before scales, you know root 3rd, 5th, 7th", and when asked what the numbers meant, had to relate it back to scales! Perfec! Learn some basic scales and how they relate to each other, take the arpeggios from that, there are loads of arpeggios that take from all notes in all scales. Then practice it in a musical context, what I did was buy a cheap looping pedal, lay down some basic chords (guitar/piano/bass...whatever) and just practice my scales, modes and arpeggios over it, makes it more relevant than just plonking up and down the fretboard! Si p.s. Phrygian Dominant is a particular fave of mine!
13. I got it wrong, was getting over excited....I'm '83, both the models I'm talking about above are '85s Probably highlighting your point even more stringrayfan! Si
14. Wouldn't a much simpler plan be to just buy a 4 string Stringray, and have a scratchplate custom made like the 5 string version, doing away with the metal control plate etc. Easy Si
15. Ok so, after saying that I wouldn't be asking for any 'build' pictures of the neck, I couldn't say no when Ian offered them because of some slight time setbacks. So here we are: The last picture here shows the overhang nicely, this was necessary to have a 22 fret fingerboard! It has been constructed in a way that the scratchplate slides right on under the fingerboard! Schmexual! The fingerboard will have a Satin Lacquer finish There are some other headstock mods happening that will get explained when I have the visual aids handy! The birdseye in the first 7 frets looks beautiful, I can't wait to see the flame on the back of the neck! Si p.s. The white scratchplate and control plate/knobs in the pictures aren't what will be installed. Mine will be a stack knob arrangement with black scratchplate. The Badass II is mine though!
16. my blonde finished '83 found it's way into a ginger guitarists hands in Preston 6 months ago, so since then I've been GASing for a new instrument! Recently found myself exclusively playing another '83, definitly not as hard work to play as previous '83, slightly smaller body and neck make it easier to get around on! Excellent hardware that will require no modding and having checked in the control cavity, i can reveal that everything is very neat, and also just as I like it....passive! Si
17. Just chill out 'Feel' it!! Si
18. No there doesn't seem to be! There's a link for diagram 'Jazz Bass Stacks', but thats referring to their 'stacks' pickups rather than stack knobs! edit: Actually, I just found this on the fender site, can anyone add in where I would put the on/on/on switch? Si
19. Hi all, I'll cut right to the chase! Can anyone draw up a wiring diagram for me!? What I'm after is a stack knob jazz layout, so vol/tone x 2 with a switch in between them that selects neck/both/bridge Thanks in advance! Si
20. So a couple of slow days have ensued! Worked on friday (gotta pay the rent), and also had the 7 tracks I had finished approved by the rest of the band! Just finished the 8th track this morning, 'This Is A Fraud' Just moving onto 'The Saviour' now! 8 down....2 to go! Si
21. Offset Festival Announced! Along with Fightstar, Ghost Of A Thousand, Exit Ten & loads more!! Si
22.
It's a 3 bolt Fender FFS... all it needs is a firm pull the other way and it'll be c*ck on! Until you knock it the other way of course Stuff like that is easily enough fixable by a competent DIYer or a straightforward job for a professional but factor in the hassle when setting your budget.
It's a four bolt! Si
23. I'm going to TRY and make it! Came last year! I have a gig in North East London that night, and it's also the London Tattoo Convention that weekend (although looks like I'll be going on Sunday now). So mark me down as a maybe! If I come, i'll be bringing my new Drop C Jazz, it'll definitly be finished by then! Could bring my trusty USA Jazz, simply because it's an awesome specimen IMO, but people would probably be more interested in seeing/playing my lakkie 44-02D (which might be for sale then). To be honest, If I've got a gig, I might just take my rig and go straight there after! Si
24. I love the white 'Blossom' one! Si
25. So bit of a slow one today, not completely on target! I started and finished tracking By Virtue and Finding The Bomb. I finished about 60% of Expert In Trickery and hit a bit of a mental wall with it, so will finish that in the morning! I'm actually closing my eyes and seeing bass waveforms in cubase lol. "Fives" is all fingered parts, as is Finding The Bomb, Expert In Trickery has some pick parts. Finding The Bomb and Expert In Trickery seem to be centered around some harmonic hot spots on the neck, and I was getting some unwanted harmonic ringing in places, the solution?....well that's obvious isn't it!?...... Boxer shorts tied (not just draped) around my bass.....gotta be a first for a 'prog' album , worked a treat though! Deadened everything off nicely. Lovely 3.4 songs to go! Si
