Basically I'm after a Dimarzio Model J (to match the model P already installed) to be routed into the bridge position of my Precision project. Seemingly you can't buy Model J's singularly, so I emailed the UK distributor and they said they can have a single one sent to me, but it wouldn't be boxed and would work out to about £55!! Seeing as the Ebay shop I got my Ultrajazzes from are selling both the Model J set and the Model P/J set for £65, it seems much more economical to buy one of them and sell the surplus pickup. So yeah....anyone looking to buy either a Model P or the neck pickup of a Model J set? for around £32? Gimme a PM Cheers Si

Well I got hold of my Dimarzio UltraJazzes from these guys (after a little cock-up on my behalf) yesterday, and I have to say, I couldn't be happier!! The price was great (£35 cheaper than allparts) They were VERY quickly delivered The customer service / correspondence was fast and very helpful I think perhaps Thomann only have two of those boxes ticked? Perhaps just the first one!? BIN's are also only available to people who have feedback over 15? is that right?.....I think its in the pipeline for these guys as soon as that happens. There was no 'bidding' on my item...the price stayed the same! Anyway, highly recommended! Cheers Si

Again, I'm not flaming at all, and I understand the frustration behind the original post.... ...but I'm not sure it's entirely in good taste complaining that people don't want to give to any particular cause or charitable event. Everyone has their own reasons, so I'm not going to go into mine. I play both covers and originals, a lot of each! And I have to say that I really enjoy the covers band I'm in, I think perhaps if i wasn't in that band I wouldn't rush out to join another, for me, it's more about enjoying the people I play with, they make it a lot of fun! But I agree with ARGH, covers work can do wonders for your stamina, it also teaches you how to deal with problems on the fly, listening and watching your other band members, thinking on your feet. That's something that I agree you can't pickup during 30min originals shows very easily, but the skills are definitly transferable!! A lot of purely originals players I know couldn't improvise an accidental arrangement change if they had a map Nice one! Si

Yes of course this is all very over-simplified, there have been entire collections of books, volumes upon volumes, dedicated to the history of music and how EVERYTHING is interlinked (much like notes on a fingerboard hmm!), so I don't think we could cover it all here without applying a bit of historical license Si

It seems the OP has an interest in Metal, as they seem to be the examples he cites. It's fairly obvious to me that bands such as Sikth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah etc are heavily influenced by Jazz (modal, modern etc) and other such theoretically conceptual genres, the harmonic content, rhythms and general technicality of it. It's a natural timeline, organic like anything creative. Obviously placing Robert Johnson next to Slipknot wouldn't make a very obvious connection, but missing a few era's out, no RJ means no Zepplin means no Metallica means no Slipknot. That particular example is obviously arguable but it highlights the basic idea behind the all of this. Si

So for my lil build project, I need a black jazz scratchplate. The body is (was) a Fender Highway Jazz apparently. So do we know if that is the same shape/size/screw number as say a Standard US Jazz? Cheers Si

If 6 months is what you think you need to either stop playing music...or fall in love with it again, then you should take it! Because it isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes I'll feel a little stale perhaps, but that's with myself rather than bass/music usually, so I simply won't pick up my bass in the week between my various weekend gigs, I concentrate on living out the other parts of my life and by the time I go to play the gig, I'm revitalised. Different scale too what you're going through, but I reckon within a month, You'll want to get back out there! Remember, music is about life. With regards to finding a decent originals band, just keep an eye of all your decent local metal acts on myspace, usually if one of them needs a member, they'll advertise it in their name, for example: 'Rotting Flesh Garment [bass player needed]', plenty of friends I know have gotten gigs by just keeping their eyes peeled and talking a lot with bands...being a fan. But what exactly are you looking for? A decent metal band who is doing well will be on the road 6 months of the year!! Can you afford to do that?. If not, If, like some, you have to be teaching and doing covers shows every week and weekend to pay the bills then perhaps you should change your expectations too a studio project or look for a more challenging and exciting covers band! I'm all for people making their own opportunities! Don't just go for rehearsals with any old band, make sure you love the music, then if you love the music, make sure you like the people....if either is missing, leave it! If you're not feeling it...it'll come across as such! Also I think it's fair to say that if you're going for a 'world music' audition one week and a 'metal' audition another, you probably aren't going to have the 'look' for at least one of them....although it shouldn't do...aesthetics do play a role...moreso in rockier genres! Find out the jam-nights and stuff that decent players hang out at and go play! Talk to a lot of people (you mention you're shy...that's no good) Good luck! Si

So...little update The body is now alllll done, and I dropped it round Ian's (chopthebass) house last night. He's building the neck for this project (neck spec in the post above). I saw the wood being used, and not only is the birdseye fingerboard beautiful, the flame maple that'll be the neck is stunning!! There isn't going to be any 'progress' photos, mainly because I just want to see the finished product, but also so Ian can just get on with the build and won't have to faff around dusting his poor camera whenever it's in the workshop Thats about it at the moment, Pickups are purchased, still need a black Jazz scratchplate to fit a US Jazz though Lovely Si

It's cos it's pointy init!! no help....sorry...everyone has it covered it seems. My 2 pence: Gut the electronics and put a decent preamp in (Aguilar, East etc) and Dimarzio p'ups in it! Si
