1. At Islington Academy in April Si
2. Have a video, from the same gig as the picture I posted earlier in the thread! Si
3. I'm potentially interested!! Basically, I love the sound of my US Jazz, but I'm having issues with the raised pole-pieces becoming sharp and cutting my fingers. I'm looking for some pickups that will give me a similar tone, but with pole-pieces flush with their covers. Are the Wizard as such? or are they raised a little?. Maybe some pictures almost flat on would help. I've also heard that these are darker sounding than the 64's!? Is there still a fair amount of growl / honk from them too? What kind of sounds do you get when each of the pickups are solo'd etc? Thanks a lot Si
4. If its short scale, get a new bass, you'll get naff-all tension for low tunings out of anything shorter than 34" (except maybe a well made custom 33"....thats my disclaimer Eude ). And yeah, Drop G is pretty low (although Sikth were in drop G for DOADD, and I'm sure Meshuggah are around that area, and their guy just uses a 5 string Stingray I think), 35" would be preferable. If you're running a 4 string, use the lowest four strings from a five string set (BEAD) and tune down, re-cutting the nut while you're at it, u don't need to necessarily bother with heavier gauges, just higher tension strings....check out Newtone Strings. If you're running a 5 string, just a standard five string set (BEADG) and tune down with the same high tension strings! My band tunes to Drop C standard (C,F,Bb,Eb), and with the high tension strings I get a similar action and tension to my standard tuned basses, very little rattle, and all on 45-105 gauges at 34" scale To answer the original point though, if you're bass is active, try looking into having it changed to an 18v circuit, that usually fattens up any sound. I'm trying to move away from Active stuff, so my current project is a passive bass for my band, I've gone for some really high-powered passive Dimarzios, and with a little extra work from my amp, should get just as fat a tone as I get from my 18v Stingray Si
5. This Is Where It Ends - Barenaked Ladies from the 'Born On A Pirate Ship' album Si
6.
Hi Si, Yes mate, it's Precision lust I've got and there ain't no cure. Saying that, a Sunburst Bob Glaub Lakland would do nicely too but it's probably unlikely there's many of these floating about spare! ;-) T
Ok no probs, am looking to shift my Lakland 44-02 Deluxe soon maybe! So if you have a change of heart Good luck Si
7. Might try and get along to this, I know Acle from Tesseract/Fell Silent quite well, he's producing our album! Plus I hear funny things about Anchorhead lol Si
8. Is it only a Precision you're after as a trade? Si
9. Basically I'm after a Dimarzio Model J (to match the model P already installed) to be routed into the bridge position of my Precision project. Seemingly you can't buy Model J's singularly, so I emailed the UK distributor and they said they can have a single one sent to me, but it wouldn't be boxed and would work out to about £55!! Seeing as the Ebay shop I got my Ultrajazzes from are selling both the Model J set and the Model P/J set for £65, it seems much more economical to buy one of them and sell the surplus pickup. So yeah....anyone looking to buy either a Model P or the neck pickup of a Model J set? for around £32? Gimme a PM Cheers Si
10. Well I got hold of my Dimarzio UltraJazzes from these guys (after a little cock-up on my behalf) yesterday, and I have to say, I couldn't be happier!! The price was great (£35 cheaper than allparts) They were VERY quickly delivered The customer service / correspondence was fast and very helpful I think perhaps Thomann only have two of those boxes ticked? Perhaps just the first one!? BIN's are also only available to people who have feedback over 15? is that right?.....I think its in the pipeline for these guys as soon as that happens. There was no 'bidding' on my item...the price stayed the same! Anyway, highly recommended! Cheers Si
11. Yeah I didn't know about the Lakland thing either!! Fair play! Si
12. I think my friend Gabby Young was playing! Si
13. Well I just purchased some pickup from them yesterday (monday 14th), so we'll see how they get on! Si
14. Hard to get decent pics of the whole band on stage.....standing in one place anyway lol Islington Academy April '08 Si
15. Very cool!! My mate just got back from San Diego where he pickup up a pre-CBS ('63) sunburst strat!!!! Si
16. Again, I'm not flaming at all, and I understand the frustration behind the original post.... ...but I'm not sure it's entirely in good taste complaining that people don't want to give to any particular cause or charitable event. Everyone has their own reasons, so I'm not going to go into mine. IMO the original post also sort of undermines the people who have contributed, it's a classic case of glass half-empty, just see the 60 members who have kindly given as being the glass half-full Good Luck Si
17.
Incident? Gig didn't go to well then?
Naaa, ARGH was just annoyed that someone in the crowd exclaimed while he was playing the 9 "why have the band got 2 guitarists and no bass player" I'M JOOOOKKKING! Si
18. Oh wow, I knew that they changed owners but not that they'd moved! I guess it's more of an excuse to visit my parents in Colchester now huh! Si
19. I play both covers and originals, a lot of each! And I have to say that I really enjoy the covers band I'm in, I think perhaps if i wasn't in that band I wouldn't rush out to join another, for me, it's more about enjoying the people I play with, they make it a lot of fun! But I agree with ARGH, covers work can do wonders for your stamina, it also teaches you how to deal with problems on the fly, listening and watching your other band members, thinking on your feet. That's something that I agree you can't pickup during 30min originals shows very easily, but the skills are definitly transferable!! A lot of purely originals players I know couldn't improvise an accidental arrangement change if they had a map Nice one! Si
20. Yes of course this is all very over-simplified, there have been entire collections of books, volumes upon volumes, dedicated to the history of music and how EVERYTHING is interlinked (much like notes on a fingerboard hmm!), so I don't think we could cover it all here without applying a bit of historical license Si
21. It seems the OP has an interest in Metal, as they seem to be the examples he cites. It's fairly obvious to me that bands such as Sikth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah etc are heavily influenced by Jazz (modal, modern etc) and other such theoretically conceptual genres, the harmonic content, rhythms and general technicality of it. It's a natural timeline, organic like anything creative. Obviously placing Robert Johnson next to Slipknot wouldn't make a very obvious connection, but missing a few era's out, no RJ means no Zepplin means no Metallica means no Slipknot. That particular example is obviously arguable but it highlights the basic idea behind the all of this. Si
22. kneck?? You've been looking at these types of listings too long Jon Si
23. Dunno, it was Fender UK if that makes any difference. Emailed them yesterday morning and they got back to me today! Si
24. It might be worth listing some basses that you're interested in for trades, just because this gives people an idea of what to offer! Thats a little easier than us trying to guage what it's worth as a second hand custom instrument with a Euro price-tag It looks lovely though Good luck Si
25. Nevermind....Fender actually got back to me Delete the thread if you want!! Si
