Go secondhand rather than new and you can get a lot of bass for well under your budget. Like I've said before I've got 5 strings by Shuker,Roscoe and Warwick and a Tobias 6 string, all for well under your budget and none of them cost £1000. Lately I've seen basses by Musicman,Warwick,Sandberg,Lakland and even Warrior for under a grand.
This...and throw in Sei and Sadowsky, Overwater etc and you have a hell of a lot of bass for £1500 potentially. SH prices, of course.

It doesn't really matter so much how you cut the cloth..just that you have an 'agreement' which might need to have a legal slant to it in some shape or form. I've worked with drummers who think their drumming constitutes a writing credit and therefore a royalty and are VERY serious about that position.

School boy errors at gigs - my worst was last night
JTUK replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Can't believe in 23yrs of gigging I did this; arrived at the venue to soundcheck and started unpacking. I took the cab out of it's flight case and put my Orange Terror head on top. It then dawned on me I'd forgotten my leads bag! The head takes Speakon too so I was stuffed. The soundman didn't have one & the guys in my band hadn't even heard of Speakon. The support was an acoustic solo act. Of course I didn't even have a jack to jack or kettle lead either. D'oh! We're done so many kit shares and acoustic sets recently I don't think I'd taken my own rig since last November. I wound up going through the PA via a borrowed lead and fashioned a passable sound but genuinely can't believe it didn't occur. Has anyone bettered that? Forgotten your bass?
Sax layer turned up on the gig with me once. when asked where Iw as, his jaw dropped and said he plain forgot.. Gtr player had to drive home and get his bass. -
My 2p is that the tone and electrics wasn't the thing that grabbed me at all...which is why my interest died pretty much there and then. Beautifully made but in a quirky style which again, wasn't me.. So, all in all..you have to really like them and all that comes with the package..and no one can deny fab quality in some areas, but I think you have to play anything you buy... so for a £2k plus bass you certainly have to be prepared to trawl the country and spend months in your quest. I have to say it sounds more like you like the idea of one rather than must have one..and there isn't that much wrong in that. It's your money.
Need a smiley for DOH! Edited to correct.
I thought maybe it was just my amps..!! and this new lot of stuff had a different take on things. But, yes, I guess it would make more sense to start at 12.. maybe.. but I am an old fart anyway..!!

RE the Markbass stuff...yep, you do need it to do the gigs you do. The number of times I see a bass player turn up with a tiny rig and he thinks that from a volume POV he is covered..!! Sometimes he may well be, but others he is straining the c*** out of it and it really sounds like it as well. Enough voume in a rig is not the same as a great sound at all. Keep the MB.. even tho I am not a fan so much..but at least you have the full beans should you need it. IMO.
They probably started by picking up a right hander and just flipped it over,so got used to playing that way. I'm sure that if you start that way then it becomes as 'natural' as playing in standard tuning.
agree..and it makes for some very interesting takes on stylistic things...some are a pig to ape, others are far easier. Haslip is great so trying to nick his lines could lead you into territory playing-wise you wouldn't get exposed to otherwise.

Agree that humbucker on a bass can be overkill... esp with an active pre as well. Just waaaay too much bass and therefore mud.and a shi**y sound. You can loose all your tonal character like this pretty easily. Also..am confused how 3 on a dial is perceived as less. My dials always start from about 7 0'clock so 3 is VERY loud. 9 0'clock would be a tickle. But the whole point of valve pre's is to OD them if that is your thing. How/why you would switch between core sounds is not something I'd do, personally. You either like clean on a bass or you don't. And don't get me started on pedals.
We played there 2 weeks ago. The evening started well when the landlord tried to pick a fight with one of the punters! He didn’t want to kick him out, just wanted a fight in the bar! I know we need as many gigs as we can get but this one really didn't have much to commend it!
Wow.... now I think we are really picky with the pub dates but this is ridiculous. Basically if we don't like the pub or landlord or space or anything else, we don't do the place but this is whole new level . Pubs are also changing landlords pretty quickly these days but how this guy could get a post, I don't know..!!

A freind of mine always wanted a Les Paul and finally got one...it was a big pile of sh*t and he was forever swapping out this and that and it still never sounded great. For that money you really NEED to try it...

Not enough signal into the power amp to work
-
How do they get change of use..??? We have a few places round here that were up for sale..and people were interested in them as a nice house-buy and they were cheap for that, considering what a place that size would normally cost, But they couldn't get the conversion of use, AIUI. They are still trading as pubs and we hear stories of pubs going all the time. There are stil new music pubs starting up though...on the basis that turn-over is turn-over and not a complete dead-night...??

SOLD: Epifani PS 210 - 2 x 10" 8ohm cab £250
JTUK replied to Stuee's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
The ABM head will go down to a 4 Ohm load, so this would be fine (no idea what it'd sound like though...) You won't get the full 300W though (I thought the ABM was 325W or something...?) probably only ~200W unless you add another 8 Ohm cab.
Correct..but that will be the issue with all 8ohms cabs used singularly. You can only get what any given amp will deliver at 8ohms resistance -
ops.. update. I'd review it at 1 week to the gig....and presume you have had a dep or can get one. Sounds like you wont need one though.
Talk to your doctor or physio and follow their advice. The consequences of making a long term mess of this are horrid. Steve
This... if it is causing you pain to play so much you need painkillers, then take the hint
Wedding in a big marquee overlooking the Purbeck hills. Great setting - easy setup - a crowd that were well up for it and loverly ladies in skimpy outfits. What is there not to like? Home by midnight. Win win win.
where is that 'like' button..!!!

I agree... hope she was happy with 40 odd...and she sticks with it. Hopefully the other bands will be as helpful as well.and this venue builds. It can take a year round here to establish a venue as a proper circuit venue so that is quite a commitment financially for a pub to hang out that long for returns..??

Maybe post a locatioon so if anyone on here wants a fix, they know how close you may be. IIRC, there is also a list of tech people somewhere here for the same reason
The Railway Inn , Coed Talon Pretty quiet really as the landlady has just started putting bands on , there were only about 40 in, but they rocked the place , it turned out to be a brilliant intimate kind of gig and got to re-book in 8 weeks .
If you got 40 in then that is a decent start for a new venue..I hope this encourages this LL and venue to keep this up...and good attendance can't always be there straight away. If you think the venue needs support ..and you'll get more gigs from that as well..then I'd go out and see if I could help promote it in some small way. I always try and post on our website and FB detailing the recent gigs..even though you can't and probably shouldn't slag off many places if you intend to go back there... so you have to be 'positive' and not so much, objective. ...... Play the game.

A great ear will get you quite a way but sooner or later you will need just that bit more. Either you play with very good jazzers who can 'teach' you the fly as you are exposed to all sorts or you have to go and seek it out. I would seek out instruction from someone who can show you how to find your way through a decent chart so I would go and find a decent jazz pianist who is gig active and get him to teach you to play what is in front of you.
If you like it keep it. I assume you first bought the gear because you felt you needed it for what you were doing, and it's not like you're just sat at home noodling away with it. Enjoy it.
I'd agree.... and only you can answer whether you can put the money to better use, but I'd keep it.
i have a jam every friday with local musicians.. we usually get a very cool groove going, with a horn, percussion, drums, guitars etc.... this young guy came along called Steve... he had a budget ish kit... a little percussion stand to his right.... i sh*t you not, this guy was epic..!!.. ive played with alot of drummers in my time but this guy was off the wall.... 23 years old and can play with such sensitivity, maturity and dynamics... this guy was about as good as i could possible want a drummer to get.... think billy cobham crossed with Poogie Bell in the groove, and that would be close... people never cease to amaze me.... i never tire of playing bass to a drummer like that.. do you know anyone who is totally killer on an instrument
Best musician I've ever played with is a drummer... Clive Jenner. He could stop sound checks stone dead with his groove and funk chops. Stone Dead..!! His hi hat work was THE funk. He was about 23 at the time, IIRC
