Help with my Hartke transporter 4 x 10 cab, (i think its knackered)
JTUK replied to police squad's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd warm it up inside a house and then see if I could free up all the connections on the speakers.. and make sure nothing is coroded. Or...just advertise it as such and let the buyer do that work and maybe snag a bargian if it is something simple and quick to fix. -
No sure you should be entering BOTB comps with an album to promote...you need to sync these up... Isn't this the cart before the horse...releasing something without a fan base.. or any gigs you can do. You are going to have to self-promote..and convince the venue that you can get people in

have to diagree with the general sentiment here. If the only reason you get up and play..altho that is to be applauded on some level that they made out of the bedroom.. is because people tolerate the band, then that just isn't good enough. You might be kidding yourselves but you are short changing everyone else. If you can outdraw most bands around because you market extremely well, then that will get you favours with pubs and the like because that IS the game, but at least know that is the only thing that makes you viable. You know you have hit the buffers when someone calls out Sweet Home Alabama, and the band says they don't know how to play it..!!! hmmm..maybe... But music is also about excellence and there may be a few ways you can equate that but being popular with mates who will turn out is ok...only up to a point tho..IMV. The bands I am thinking about will have to be very careful about who or if they share a bill as that is where things will get pretty tricky for them... but in the case of one of those bands, I don't think they realise how out of their depth they are. The other band does have a very charistmatic frontman...and I make the distinction between that and singer/vocalist I must admit to being impressed about bands who can fill a venue but it also depends how they set about that...do they just play a very populist set and therefore are popular for that..or do they do their thing very well, have built up a following and are therefore getting there on their own merits...?? I know which way I prefer. But hey, we play pubs and clubs, so who cares..? I like to do these things to the best of my ability and I expect others in the band to do the same, but then we do it for us first and foremost. Some audiences can do with a little bit of educating I do admire bands who can fill venues but at the same time, I reserve the right to think some might be godamn awful at playing once they get there -
Mute with the left hand.

Perfectably acceptable rant, IMO... and yes, there are crap rigs out there that you really shouldn't bother with.

Thunderfunk 550b withdrawn (sorry cant sell this baby).
Another advocate of these amps. re. getting a bad sound; I don't even use the EQ on this amp, all I've ever needed to do was tweak the Timbre & Enhance controls! 550w and it is unlikely to EVER run out of power. As for the 'Switch'... I think they all do that, it is even mentioned in the manual IIRC.
Never noticed the switch thing..and agree 100% about the semi 4 band..never ever have to touch it..might roll a bit off the bass control which lives at 12 o' clock most ot the time, so notched 'flat' as is everything else. Timbre and enhance do 99% of things...but hardly touch them either...and I gig with two basses..which sound pretty different for jazzes, They are active tho so have a bit of EQ onboad. Ziggy, are you nuts..?? -

IMO and experience, 12's or 15's do not match up to multiple10's but you'll find plenty here who are satisfied using a single 12 or 15" A single 210 is as big a compromise as a 115 or 112 but when you talk about doubling then you are into whole new territory. If it were me, I would try and find a new storage home for the bass stuff as space seems to be the main driver in all this. Somewhere warm and dry, like a band mates house. ha ha !! you'd have to go and collect it and handle it yourself though as that would be expecting too much. I do agree that Eden and Epi should be a quality rig...and not something I'd let go of easily. What are you going to replace it with... ?? that thought would fill me with dread, tbh..!! esp as cost will be a major factor and limiter, maybe.?
-
If you need to downsize what you listed, be ready to compromise all round, IMV. But thats ok, as long as you are prepared for that. I don't know what gigs you have to take on, but my minimum is 2x112 and a 400w amp for a small pub. This is as small but as full range as I can get to. Still, if you must, that UL310 should fly out in the FS forum.
This may sound like sour grapes and I suppose a bit of it is. An acquaintance of mine, inspired by seeing my old rock covers band, decided to pick up a guitar and put a band together with some of his mates. They've been together a couple of years now and in that time, their playing and their performances haven't improved one bit. The singer doesn't have a bad voice but a lot of the set is outside his range and comfort zone leading to embarrassing 'I shouldn't have gone for it' moments. The rhythm section is very sloppy and three out of the four look like they've been given some really bad news just before they went on stage. That said, three of them are work colleagues and are very popular guys at the factory where they work. They were recently given a Thursday night 'let's see how you do' gig at a big local music venue. They were as decidedly average as ever. Now, whenever they play, if it's a Friday/Saturday night or in this case, just before the Easter hols, half the factory turns up for a works 'p*ss up' at the gig. I'd estimate there were between 120 and 150 folks in there last Thursday night. As a result, they've now been offered a support slot to one of the biggest tribute acts in the UK. It has to be purely based on the fact that they filled the venue because it certainly isn't because of their astonishing playing or performance. So I urge you all to stop practising those arpeggios and get out there and make more friends instead. You'll get more gigs as a result.....guaranteed Sour grape rant over
Well, selling tickets or a pub out is very good news for the promoters and at the end of the day, thatis the bottom line. Frustrating but a lot of things work on popularity rather than expertise. There are a few bands round here who can FB the world for gigs but most realise where they are in the food chain, as it were... There can be exceptions though... two of the very biggest draws here are outright crap and the other is average at best...and the former think they are GREAT Funny, I know.. but there you go. -
I would think that Berg AE cabs work work for both very well..and you'd need a mini desk to tweak for the keys. You really want to steer away from cabs with a big bass bias. Maybe... a MarkB 102 combo would do ok for keys as well..?? or at least try one. Very powerful shift from the VP controls

You need to find a venue that will support or want one and start it from scratch. You need to populate it with like minded people and probably call in a few favours to form a house band so they have a gig/music should not enough people venture up on stage. Suggest the venue pay the core band..or if not at least feed them free beer. The object of this is to fill a pub on a dull weak night and maybe form the start of a live music pub program to start interest. Once enough people get up then the band takes a back seat... and the band needs to avoid a trendancy to be too handy so as not to put newbie people off. Resist the temptation to be the clique that keeps everyone from embracing the idea.

Expect the usual recommendations on questions of this type.

I'd follow the pointers here and check the fuse is rated properly and correctly. You should never plug in a can to an amp under power but as its SS the fix should be relatively cheap with a decent tech. Fuses don't blow for no reason so make sure they are the right ones ---and you have spares-- and get it checked out straight away so you can get to the route problem
Is that the 112 that you're referring to? I've never had this with the 2x10 combo.
Have to say that I've used the 102 and 121 and the 102 is way better for me. For the levels that I have to run, I'd need an ext on either though, but I think the 121 struggles unless on a quiet gig more than the 102. In addition to this, I see 121's turn up on stages ( more often than I'd want ) and the guy thinks it is going to be enough..and outfront the FOH takes over... on stage,, if you have any sort of hitting drummer you are into compromise volume for tone territory. I've seen many a guy do it and get away with it, but then that also depends on what they think it is worth getting away with. This is also the MAJOR reason why I don't tend to be interested in gear share as I've learnt I'd hate to put up with what they seem to put up with, or more pertinently, it isn't going to work at all for me. It may also be that they get more level out of the own kit and I wouldn't want to damage their stuff either. Last few gigs like this inc an Ampeg 600 BA210 type combo, a GK115 thing and my mate's MarKbass 102 which I used a lot when my rig was out of action. This was the basis on my putting my current two rigs together, so I can cover large stages (100x30) or largish rooms with a small stage.
-
Sounds great... I have to say, I have fixed my 2xAE112;s from being as bass lite as I thought, altho rooms make a difference. As always, a work in progress. I still have the amp running flat on the dials and no 4 band parametric switched out I am thinking that there is something in the NEO/Ceramic difference as I am getting to hear a NEO type sound recall with all the NEO units I have tried. So far, that is Berg, GK, MarkB, Ampeg, Eminence chassis' to recall just a few..
-
Not sure you'll get a much lighter amp and cab combo that can put out nearly 300watts into its own speakers than the MB..maybe the 12" version but then that isn't as good IMO and always sounds as if it is struggling when up against a full band. Casters or a trolley is your better cheaper option if the combo you have works for you soundwise.
-
There is a difference and it isn't power issues either. I think the DB750 is the slightly more desirable but they also amaended some things on the 751 which were considered a good thing. Will have to check out TB to see what they were as they escape me atm. IIRC, voltage was one issue as most originated from the States as opposed to being imported by a distributor so you could get ones running 110V..and therefore needling a transformer box. and I don't think Aguilar had switched voltage options on them...as they weren't a exported model. If you get a fully modded 240v model 750, then that is the big problem sorted and there are a few about. I think Aguilar also altered the tone stage and people tended to prefer the 750..???

Looking for a new lightweight rig, any suggestions please
JTUK replied to police squad's topic in Amps and Cabs
Excellent, sorted..!! -
I's say a Markbass 102 combo but they can be found for around £600 SH...not sure if you call that cheap enough. Otherwise, maybe the Eden Nemesis 210 range..??? not sure of the weight.
-
[sup]Have you ruled out the amp being at fault....sounds like a possible dry solder joint somewhere in the chain.?[/sup] [sup]I'd isolate the amp and cab and see which one keeps showing the crackling and then you'll know which to concentrate on[/sup]

Great sounding amps when I had the good fortune to use one. Never felt the need to own one, tho funnily enough I did really think about one for sale with a 1516. A amp tech I use does not have good words to say about them but I suspect some of that is also to do with him having to weight-lift one onto his service bench.

Have to say we don't do anything different at weddings that we wouldn't be prepared to do otherwise and we insist they need to know and approve our set as that is what they will get. One or two recent additions that we have been asked to do at weddings became part of our set....namely 'Roadhoue blues' by Blue Oyster Cult.( far better than the Doors version which was originally requested) Sometimes it helps if you give the bookers some credit that they might have a wide musical taste and they might want stuff by Starsailor or the like... But then we don't chase weddings and wouldn't call ourselves a wedding band which could cover all basses... there are plenty of bands that do that..and we would politely point them that way. There is no point being unsuitable for the gig no matter what the money is...

Should I add another cab or Switch for something bigger.
JTUK replied to CJPJ's topic in Amps and Cabs
Come on then, it was a reasonable question, substantiate your earlier statement. There's no clue in your sig....
Not sure why would I need a clue in my sig..?? what does that say..?? I am a pretty active poster on cabs here so if you follow such threads, you'd probably know my thinking, but anyway... I've used most cabinet configs ranging from 810,through to 1516's and hybrid types, down to single 12's and 2x10's and just about everything in between. I thnk I've used most configs that come to mind.inc 118 and 115 bins. As for makes..well, there are a lot of them I say the 410 is the cab to beat but it will be heavy and you may want to make a compromise in the sound for the weight. This is understandable, for sure, as most don't have help with kit. I don't think a good 15 will beat a good 410's but then I think it is misguided and unreasonable to think it will. I currently run very good 2x112's and they sound great, IMO, the carry is great and they are more than a good shout but they lose out to my 2x210's. It is close which ones I gig with but the consideration is the carry....if I want the best sound, I go with the 10's. They fill the stage better, they are very focused and they handle the lows very well without being bass heavy. The 2x112 do this too but are just a bit shy, IMO in comparison If I didn't have the 2x210's then I would be more than satisfied with the 2x112, but since I do, I'd say the 12's come up a tad short. Have to add, that I tend to prefer ceramic cabs as well...altho can't quite put my finger on why..same with rear ports. This is not deliberate or scientific, just the way those params seem to work for me...
