Auditions - why are some musicians so damned rude to others?
JTUK replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for all the comments guys I did think about the 'we're putting the band back together' idea but shied away from it only because it seems to so tough to get gigs these days. I used to play in & 'manage' a 13 piece soul band a few years back - fantastic gigging experience but a monster pain in the butt keeping everyone together & I guess that's jaundiced my opinion about trying to set something up from scratch & being the chief organiser I do also know a singer who I'd happily work with again so maybe there's something in this idea after all. . . Also - I've just applied for an audition for a regular gigging function band & I know at least half of their set well already. Never know, maybe this is the one
+ Getting gigs is tough and so is starting up but there is also a lot of crap out there so it shouldn't be hard to back your outfit..plus it shouldn't be one person's job to get the gigs..everyone should chip in. If one person takes that much 'control' and manages the band, then I don't think that works work very well if you are only working for fun type money.. -
Should I add another cab or Switch for something bigger.

If that is the way they both carry on then best off out of it and it is their loss. It is best that you know this now, IMO. Put you own unit together.. you must know enough people if you are in the swing of things. The only reason for auditions would be if you are new to the area, I think. -
SP410 displacement 300cc. Barefaced Compact displacement 566cc. The advantage of 566cc versus 300cc is just as significant as it would be If these were motorcycle engines. The Beta 10s used in the OBC 410 have only 102cc displacement each, for a total of only 408cc.
I wouldn't use either..I would get a regular 410. -
What's your budget? How many gigs are you planning to do? My first suggestion would be to get another SP210 cab.
Agree on this approach, or get an Orange 410 -
just a quick update. Decideded against the mark traveller cabs as too many people say they are bottom end lite. decided that I needed to try the club series, then remembered my local music shop had a s/h 1x15 std mark. went there to have a look/listen. he also had a club 115. how much Dave? I asked. £250 each cab. so obviously I bought them both. got a gig tonight depping for some friends, so I'll try my hartke ha3500 through them. order my ampeg PF500 next week. now looking for club 2x10
NIce work...did the Lantterns club and was I glad I took the lightweights as it was 3 floors, FFS..!! Gave them a good beating as well and the 2x112's are getting there. Still have the 2x210's in front tho.. Will pop along to a gig to check out your yellow perils..!! -
[sup]Best Bang for buck is an older SWR Goliath on here, IMO. I think the G ll is an immense cab, and the G lll are more than decent as well altho I have less time on them [/sup][sup]as I ran the jnrs instead.[/sup] [sup]But since you are using an Eden head..I would check out Eden XLT types... or get 2 210 XLT types....you should be able to squeeze in both for your budget.[/sup]

I prefer rear ports, as it happens, but neither is a deal breaker. On stage the AE112's are pokey but I am sure they travel well...as the gtr was out front and he noticed the sound straight away..before he noticed they were new cabs on the gig. I'll be taking them tonight to a new place with PA FOH. but only 'cos of the stairs, I think. -
EDIT :- JTUK beat me to it again with the Berg 15 comment. Damn - I'm too slow at typing. Berg used to do a 15 cab. Not now though but they are a small relatively new company. I was a traditional mixed cab person for many yrs and it worked for me because I felt that the combinations gave me a fuller range. Had 2x10 and seperate 1x15's, 1x12&15 in same cab, 4x10 with seperate 15 and when i looked at new kit i decided light weight was for me and went for the mid-point 12" cabs by Bergantino. I think my sound lacks a little lo-mid punch at times and the 10" cabs might have been a better option for me. It might simply be down to the tube pre-amp type sound and I'm still experimenting with that. I would now agree that the modern speaker has a far greater range than those from 70/80's where a speaker was specifically designed with a frequency in mind. I've read that the 12 is the modern 15 and the 10 is the modern 12 and that's kinda stuck in my mind. Based on that I'm looking for a little more mid and the 10's might suffice. The Berg 12's can and do give a clear wide ranging sound. I have bought Karlfer's Berg HT322 with a 12 and 2x10's in same cab with tweeter in hope that it will give me the mid punch i have in my head.
Interesting that you have now got the HT 332 and 2xAE112, IIUC. I would think there would be quite a lot of crossover there as the AE112 is not mid shy by any means, so it does a good job of cutting through, IMO. And I don't mean 'cut' as in a volume war I think my 2x210's do this job a little better but I need more time to be definitive on this...but it could be that the AE112 is lacking down below. They are nowhere near as big down low as GS112's for example... but then the GS needed a lot of poke from me to file up a mid hole. Funnily enough, they ( GS112) were perfect with new strings on... but lacking without that presense. It would be intersting to see how you compare the HT322 and the AE112's as I'd expect the HT cab to have better higher range..which as I said, isn't what the AE112's lack. Maybe the 210 will add the low..but I really think 10's get on to another level when there are 4 or them. I don't use any or my cab pairings singularly..unless for a REAL quiet gig..and I mean quiet Having said that..I have PA support tonight and I am wondering which cabs to take... -

I use 2x210's and pretty much changed from 115 and 210 as the 115 was not, IMV, a single cab solution, was damn heavy and too big to get in the car without such a lot of hassle. I went to 2x210 and I don't feel that I have lost anything, I still get a monstrous and very focused low B which IIRC, is better than the 115/210 set-up...altho I am very impressed with tapes made from those gigs re bass sound. Would I go back to a 115..? no, The biggest single factor was that it wasn't useable on its own. It is no surprise to me that the likes of Berg don't make 15 cabs, altho they used to. I've always been convinced that 410 is the best for bass anyway, so a 2x210 is getting as close to that as you can, IMO But knowing the OP, I can see why their choice is a very good one for them. I look forward to hearing it. -

The thing is...some people might say don't mix ..but not many makers actually adhere to this and make a range of cabs featuring different size chassis.. Others say you can't determine what a particular speaker might sound like as chassis spec has moved on...bla bla..but then in the same breath say don't mix. Also, do cab makers produce a cab purely on spec...?? doubt it..they might do it on paper and then demo the results. You can bet they will bin the project if on paper it should sound great, but it actually sucks in demo...HOPEFULLY..!!! You aren't going to walk out of the shops with a great gtr, amp or cab of paper unless you are a idiot, without your ears have given it final approval. Anyway, not really concerned about an argument for and against. If it sounds good to you M, then it probably is. -
Help!!! don't we mix 10s and 15s anymore. what's changed and when, (I've obviously spent too long playing guitars) JT, yes, ampeg into mark bass. It did sound incredible and you've met my wife, she's got short arms so we want the smaller cabs , that way she can lift them about on her own. I thought the mix of the 2 sizes is good. please, more info
Nothing wrong with a1x15 and 2x10 mix at all, M. Best sound I had on playback was 115 and 210 and I recall it being pretty decent at the time as well... so not all nostalgia gloss.. I just got fed up breaking my car trying to fit it in..plus it was quite a carry as well. Lot of mumbo jumbo mentioned here about certain stuff and then re-cycled over and over. You have good ears and if you think the cabs work together, then enough said. Tbh, you can't really check out what credentials people might purport to have or not when spouting the speil...so don't worry about it. It is all opinions and we like the sound of our own voices..in print..!! If you want to know what is what..talk to G at Courtfield. -

[sub]So, Ampeg into Markbass..?[/sub] -
At £10 per hour, you need to achieve something at rehearsals. Our problem is actually getting one, so they really do not need to be wasted. I don't care if someone has had a bad day and needs a beer, but none of us can drink anyway so it isn't going to go mad and people drive to and fro so a bottle is about enough as we can manage. Mostly, I'll make tea..so insist on the rooms having a cantine of sorts and that is all we need. The bottom line for me is..I'm not their mother, so as long as they can perform what is required, I'm ok with it. But then, again, I have never seen any evidence that we need to review the situation..it appplies to gigs as well as we often get a very decent rider from a brewery gig and we never trash the bar... doubt we would be capable of drinking it, tbh We have a festival date this year and we intend to camp for the whole weekend and I was talking to one of the other bands and they said they were glad of an early slot as it is the only chance of keeping their drummer sober at a beer festival. !!!!!!

Leave the time to the drummer... if he has it wrong he needs a click to set it. This isn't a bad set-up anyway so it he wants to continue using the click all through the song, this is VERY good, IMO. If he can't keep good time and can't sit on it, then there are quite a few tracks that just will not work. This is a problem with so many bands, it is a crazy situation. I'd suggest 9 out of 10 bands are completely unaware of this. There must be so many bad drummers about that either can't sit or play in time. Don't even start with the drummer moving his foot all over the place..

It can be a question of how you play it...same song, same dull old feel or not one at all = complete boredom. So, sure why would you want to hear all that..? Same with the AC/DC and Lizzy type gtr bands rocking out....when there ain't no rock anywhere near it It should be more than just the same notes
Love that clip of Larry Graham playing with Betty Davis. .
That is because Larry Graham has always been so funky. A lot of players confuse funk with slap and are anything but funky.
-
The thing I dislike most about slap is the misconception that anyone who can do it quickly is a "good" bassist. Geddy Lee doesn't slap!
That is because it is easy to play a piece that jumps out even if your technique is a bit loose. You don't get the same sort of emphasis on a fingerstyle passage because it is so much harder to be smooth enough for people to want or be able to listen to you playing solo. And of course, not enough people listen to slap with a view to taking it somewhere, they just crash out their best riffs....along the lines of Flea and MK, typically, as they brought it closer to the masses, and altho the latter is VERY good at it..that style of slap is well out of date or so dated. Having said that, MK is good enough to re-invent himself and is far far more than the one-dimensional type player most would pidgeon-hole him with.

Depends how desperate you are or need to be. Personally I did it for long enough to be pig sick of it..and I took some time out. Now I am far more choosey about the songs and gigs I will do and take and I have no intention of getting near gigs like that again so as not to go down the same road Talking about same roads.... the gtr sets of the 80's that are hammered round here ?? Jeeeez..!!
-
[sup]One of the reasons is that you can go and see 5 bands in the course of the month and the amount of cross-over in their sets is...err...depressing.[/sup] [sup]You could accept 2 or 3 numbers maybe..but anymore than that is a waste of time, IMO. [/sup] [sup]edit for font size[/sup]

I'll be quite picky about it... but when someone trebles your money for pretty much the same amount of time and effort spent, you can waver a bit...and we do. So far, we have resisted playing stuff we don't like and we are about to put out an originals set as well. I think we will have to have 3 sets pub set functions set Festival/venue/original set ..and hope that they could and should over-lap to a degree. But the days of being an out and out function band have long gone....thankfully ...but then I can afford to say that.

If a bass doesn't do it enough for you, then you'll continue looking, I don't think you can put a figure on THE special bass, but £1k is a decent start. I'd keep looking and when you find one good enough, then you'll know soon enough. The problem comes iof you convince yourself it is good when it isn't. It is good when you just have to have it... even if it wasn't planned and you just have to 'find' the money. I never get people putting a figure on something they have never played. You might need to spend £3k and feel it is worth it or you might be dead lucky and find your needs satisfied if you had only paid £500...I think both scenario's are possible but you only know when you KNOW.
