Ampeg SVT 3 Pro - your thoughts, ladies and gents?
JTUK replied to JapanAxe's topic in Amps and Cabs
Not the best hybrid by any means, IMO. EQ stage isn't all that...but if it has that sound you want then good.... but if it hasn't, you'll struggle. A marmite amp... I far prefer the PF, strangely enough...if it must be Ampeg -
PA gear as Bass amp/cab (one of the most amazing bass tone's i've heard....)
JTUK replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
As a general point, I embarked on my bass monitor some time ago when I used Turbosound stage monitors..and SWR started the Bass monitor concept with their SM amps and Goliath cabs...way back when. The thing about only hearing very clean is that it isn't very forgiving...so you need to be up to that...or rather want to hear that coming back at you. -
I was in Guitar Guitar in Glasgow. They had Alto, Mackie, Samson, Yamaha, and QSC PA gear. I think the QSC was kind of the top of the line of what try had. I asked about RCF (the HD10a has some very interesting specs) but they didnae have it. JTUK, didn't see the wooden QSC KW12 though I'd like to give it a go at some point, alongside the K12. You're using the KW12 in your band PA rig aren't you?
Yes, we use KW12's and replaced Martin Audio ICT500's with it. I think Martin was better, but QSC is more manageable as we got to do away with C-Audio amps. We currently run the KW12's with RCF ART 905 subs. The tops are proven as far as we are concerned, need more time with the subs. Bone of contention..I am lugging a sub...and I don't yet go through it FFS..!!!! having said that.. I am loving my bass monitor rig anyway, so anywhere we use this P.A ... small halls, the bass backline can reach anyway -

Sorry, cross posting without quoting what I am referring to. Meyer is excellent but then the prices....!!! QSC is good standard function band P.A where the singer wants a better sound. IMO, decent vox P.A's need to start at this point. K series is ok...for vox and a sub... KW far more capable, but the internal mapping, as I call it, is always the clever part here. Martin is another league..but then you'll pay for it. Martin monitors are pretty often still the benchmark, Recently demo'd the Yam DSR series for a keyboard rig and it was touted as a competitor to QSC K12, RCF... but the standout was QSC KW. If you are anywhere near Andertons, they have a decent room to A/B most of this stuff. The question we asked ourselves was 'was the price save on the Yamaha worth it?'.... and the unfairness of A/B'ing this stuff is that you can make that call..which we did and it wasn't, IMO. IF we hadn't that luxury, we might have thought the Yamaha good enough. Just the observations of the day, mind...as I recall them, even though it was less than 6 months -

You'd do better with the KW series, IMO.. The KW12 is very good and worth the difference. -

Church round here has Meyer installed... To answer an earlier point, the reason I give the soundman post is so he has an idea of the sound I am after. If he can improve on that, then bonus BONUS And my amp sound isn't £500 anyway...not even S/H is his rig £25k..??? -
Sits well..??? in what regard? tempo..?? you'd need to change the key but off the top of my head, 'get lucky' might work.

The trick with actives is to use them very sparingly, IMO... so you just want to accent a passive sound as mostly the P.A's we use aren't THAT capable. Any active over-used will screw your sound out of sight and this is a major failing on the likes of Stingrays. But any bass with boost of +db is going to sound toneless if used without care and attention. P's and J's are THE workhorses at the top level as 1) the people using them know what they are doing ( or can pay someone else who knows) and 2) the EQ available and the soundmen available means passive is all you need. IMO... Actives are shortcuts tweaks

And it is in a Pub....... -

Pub gig to me is 2x45, pubs makes on the bar to pay band. Regular music nights, mainly covers. If the pub has a 'function' room and sells tickets on the door, then not a typical pub gig. IMO -

yep..which is why I say stay out of the typical pub scene and put on something different. If you are a pub band doing a pub show..then what is in it for the promoter/venue ? and why will they pay you anythng other than pub money? and how will you ever get out of the pub syndrome? Selling out 1200 seats at £10 is very good going indeed for one or two bands round here.... and they had to do a good few years of busking. That doesn't translate anywhere else yet tho... but nobody says it was easy otherwise we'd all be doing it. Something has to set you apart... however you achieve it... -
ops...got it from above...2126 =26kgs.
A DB750 puts out around 400W @ 8Ω, which isn't a problem for a 1126. If one is loud enough is harder to tell, but if two is needed, there's also the option of the 2126 which uses the same 12"-speaker (different 6"-speaker to match the dual twelves in loudness) and sounds very close to the 1126, but louder. The same capability as two 1126 cabinets, but a bit cheaper. Might be an option if you don't need to be able to take half the rig to the smaller gigs.
I don't have a problem with a 212 cab... but already run one to very good effect. What is the weight of a 2126, please, typically. I like 212's so can live with a 1126x 2 or 2126, maybe. I am a fan of the higher end horns though... and certainly could not run a cab without the high end covered. Whether this would work with a mid driver, hard to tell, without hearing. Some horns are too brittle and harsh of course, so a hi-mid driver makes sense... maybe..
At a guess? An amp with Genz Benz innards and 'Fender' written on the front is more valuable to the Fender brand than if it had a name only recognisable to bassists.
Thats assuming they use whatever Genz were good at in their 'new' boxes. They watered down SWR to a point where they weren't viable...OR much good, compared to their once emimnent position so I can see them just quietly doing the same with GB... and giving the impression they are taking on new tech... They have their manufacturing model and if GB doesn't fit in it....then that is one less in the market. As BFM says...wouldn't be the first time... or the 100th

On that point you need to stay out of pubs. Nobody is going to want to cough up £10 a ticket if they can see you down the Down and Gun the week before for free. We aren't very consistant... we don't want to pay to see a band in a venue... but we like to get paid ourselves... It is hard to position yourself as a band that gets a decent fee, decent venue and gets people to pay to come and watch. I am the frist to bleat about the many many Free 'charity' beer festivals, with a 10 band line-up... with a door charge but then the same type of festival that actually pays bands is very rare. There are a few that do it.... but the investment/risk is pretty big. The best one round here, pays a good budget to ALL bands, has weekend camping and isn't a total blokes piss-up... It gets families there during the day and women feel comfortable enough to stay thru the evening. Not an easy thing to do AT ALL.. and still sell the drinks and be THE festival gig around here..IMO.. Anyone who can get £400-500 gigs out of a pub is doing very well indeed. People have become used to free music... because there is too much of it. Don't really want to go OT, but pubs doing food AND music on a cover charge seem to be catching on quite well round here... as it is somewhere for couple to go.... This is a misunderstood area of the market, I think... -
Plantation is stopping music as well, IIRC
-
Thanks for the dimensions.... I may want to run one with a DB750... so if I need/want that power, then 2 would the requirement. On some stages I do, I need to factor in a loud stage sound where the soundman 'forgets' to put bass in the monitors.

Massive Ampeg fail! Soundgarden last night, were you there?
JTUK replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Losing his amp/amps shouldn't have been an issue. DI split into amp and that is his Bass monitor sorted whilst side fills and wedges should have bass as well. That is the way I set up my sound.... I like the xtra the mons can give, but since they are already there in the stage sound, .... a quick nod to the Mon engr and that problem would have been sorted ...before it got silly.. -

JTUK replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Hmmm... sounds like a rigging fail....and wonder if the crew got the bass back..??? If you are going to have two amps up, then have two amps UP. But I guess the moral of the story is.... if Ampeg, get 3...!! -
If the Jazz sounds good, then it isn't the amp/cab config.. look at the bass.

What to do - can't be doing with 5'ers anymore!
JTUK replied to Greggo's topic in General Discussion
Change back then .. I don't see the point of 5st, if you can't/don't hear what they do. Not something I would envisage doing, but if you are hearing 4's and prefer the layout/feel of a 4, then the choice is easy. -
ha ha Lozz... I'd keep that reference quiet if I were you. I have no interest in gtr at all.... but I heard the bass first which is why I picked it. I also think I would have been able to play decent piano and drums... but these are life long journeys (IMO) so I leave them...

Instead of saying no, just send them a nice cordial reply stating what you'll work for. If they want you, they'll need to talk about 'things' Your problem will then be, there is always a free band... oh well..!!

Did a party in Cotswolds which is quite a trek for us. Marquee and barn and the budget was good enough to get all this right. Power good... DJ good and we complemented well. Stage good, so all the things we ask for were adhered to. Hard work 'competing' with DJ for a 21st and 25th..and a few others... so that was good. Also, think we did well enough to get more work with this set who know how to put on a party. NIce nice nice, allround..and I wasn't looking forward to a 5 hr round trip, so at least we know now that the next enquiry will be worth looking at.
My 12s growl in the mids like a bugger when I dig in, in a way I never got with the Bergs. The 1126 seemed to have even more on tap, and as they're a bigger box (Aggie DB size) they'll go louder and lower too. TKS also do a larger 12" without the 6", with an optional tweeter. I'd like to hear that.
Not got a problem with a larger cab that can use a 6" and a horn... I don't use mini heads so something a rack can sit on sounds fine. 30-40lbs is fine as well.
