1. Can't seem to find Dims very easily, but the 1126 seems about right for me. Just need to get my head around weight, size and what the Ceramic option might be. I'm guessing, but a cab roughly the size of a DB112, with ceramic drivers ..PLUS 6" and horn..?? that does in excess of 300w..?? Don't want to clutter up the FB page ( and the admin time ) on this stuff if someone has the info to hand. My fave cab atm is the DB212 but I could do with a lighter version ... and smaller footprint, possibly for those gigs that have difficult carry-ins.. If I didn't loose anything in sound, volume etc ... that would be a BONUS. Then I can FB them about a shipping price and sell the Bergs and maybe a couple of others. I have too many cabs ...they all do a job, but I need to thin out the herd.
2. I think I might need to rethink my 112 requirement. The things that I need to reconcile are biting mids. This is something that an Aguialr DB112 (x2) doesn't lack ( certainly in DB212 form ) but I find AE112's do. If I could, I'd trade the Bergs for DB's.... but maybe the TKS cab is an option, esp if I could choose the black and creme covering as above...plus a tweeter. Hopefully the power handling is ok... as the Berg's do seem to take all the 550-b watts well enough so I have trust in the cabs being about to do something like 500w without struggling... or they do with the '500w' I can push out. Where is that FB page.. ?
3.
Not really. Some guys take to an instrument or a style very quickly. The moment I picked up a bass I got a better sound than the bass player in my band. I couldn't play much but SOMETHING was there. Meanwhile, I've heard that flute was easy to play but after practicing for several weeks I could barely get a sound out of it. Everyone has their natural talents and natural shortcomings.
Agree. I believe natural aptitude is one thing but some guys really get to a good level pretty quickly because they have something else. Hard work will get you quite a way but there is a limit to what it can achieve. To think it can trump natural talent is wrong and to make the most of things you need both. The best guys have the talent AND the dedication..
4. We travelled to the Cotswolds yesterday...took over 5 hrs driving which is something we just don't do, and we also stuffed up on the fee... which will not gross £200 per head, but it will lead to others so it worked on that basis. We will have to rethink the travel exes, but there is a case for loss leaders. We do pay out a min fee on every gig though as we run a kitty which is fed by the good payers. We limit charity requests but the kitty will kick in should they not pay exes, Wse look very closely at charity requests and unless everyone is working free, then neither will we. So that includes vendors, P.A, staging etc etc ... AVOID at all cost those charity beer festivals..... I'm afraid. It really is TOO much to put on a 10 band bill ALL FREE. If we pay ticketed events, then we want to know how many tickets and the price they are selling before we set a price... These are all agreed guide lines that work for us.... but as for the OP... you basically run the band, you should be getting paid extra for your van services. They have no band without that. It seems your terms are very generous, and that is down to you, but I can't believe these guys think their behaviour is not worth a debate. Band meeting time, I think.
5. But the word 'contempories' suggests that he was successful. Probably amongst the first calls of that time... depending on who you talk to
6. Agree.... they are way too many cheap gigs that you should leave alone. We have set a min fee to be paid at every gig and even if we did a gig for exes, the kitty pays out to the min fee. Every now and then a good gig will come by where you need to sit down and decide what you will get out of it... but we never take a gig without everyone aqgreeing to it. And once we have set a price, we don't haggle too far. If an 'event' thinks they can offer £450 then you will probably not like the way they do things anyway. Stages cost, P.A and lights cost, amenities cost... and the band/bands are the budget item..?? How does that work if the success of the event rests with the music..???
7.
what is outclassed JTUK.? there is no better, there is just opinion.
B5. as much as I liked to agree, there are players out there ..and this guy was one, who really had 'IT; He has a very decent CV and he was playing some things that drummers I've come across just can't even contemplate. I would say that I know about drummers, IMV, and have played with guys that are no slouches at all... but this guy was miles ahead. Feel, groove, chops...etc etc. You get guys with a pro CV and names under their belt and then you go to another level of player. I believe this guy was one of them. Most fun on a gig I've had for ages...... his contempories are still doing the TOP gigs but this guy isn't..and that is such a shame and a waste.
8. There is natural and natural, IMO. I've worked hard at stuff and am pretty happy about where I am... but once in a while, you just know you are totally outclassed by someone and then you are just happy enough to be able to stay with them..
9. Yes, I would have said that the build looks far superior...so 'budget' is definitely a cheap shot, from what I can see.
10. I thought the CN112 were quite smooth and 'NEO'..although I know people don't like to hear about a typical NEO sound, but they have that dryness in hi-mids that all the NEO's I've used have. Not as sterile as the AE112, ( not saying that is very bad ) so I would suggest they are a decent upgrade.but maybe not enough if you already have AE's... The CN112's seem to pair with a TH very well to my ears and if I were looking for a amp/cab combo, that is where I would start
11. I really like the idea of a custon order..re the finish.. Might think very hard about a lightweight Ceramic pair of 112's with horns.... in white/cream or whatever that colour is above Is that doable..?? Look pretty cool to me.
12. These things go round and round. The Stingray is a dated sound atm,and if you have a great soundman, you don't need the active element the Stingray gives you over a P, IMO. You don't need actives generally in that case... but for the local gigs, the active gives it a chance to get out of the mix, although whether that would be with a MM is up to you. I kept my Stingray as long as I could as it was a great player, but I took the pickup and Pre out to keep it.
13. Agents and pub dates aren't viable round here as they will take 10%...and that is £30 out of a £300 fee for what..??? a bit of leg work and a few calls. And remember that is 10% each time.. Agents try to tie up pubs and venues, but mostly they are in pubs who don't know what they are doing anyway. Agents only earn their money for £200 per head gigs, IMO...
14. I think it depends.... if you carry the rest of the gig off well, then no one is too concerned about the words...or the gtr solo or anything else, for that matter... but if you are all round sloppy, then they can hang you for the smallest thing and I'd have no problem with that either. You either get to the audience with the band/music or you don't...
15. People either watch you or they don't..and that is because they are interested in what you doing. If you jump around like a loon....you'll attract other loons. The audience can be too drunk at times...
16.
Tommy, at TKS, makes the cabs himself. He has no distributor and no reseller that neds a cut. And he is a really nice guy to boot. Can't loose.
ha ha ..was actually hmmming about trying some of the cabs...and whether it is time to move my 112's on... Love the look of the pics above but I think the website is a bit out of date and all in Swedish..? Assume the white tolex cab is NEO only..? Like the idea of ceramics and haven't liked any Neo cabs I've used..or more accurately, not LOVED them. Will watch the webste with interest
17. you did the right thing...offer to pay a bit more and keep the strings?
18.
............ These TKS cabs look absolutely fantastic. How do they make them without breaking the bank?!
was thinking the same...... Hmmmmmmmmmm
19.
............. How many times do bands suggest a new song, go home and practise it, and then all get to play different versions and arrangements at the rehearsal. That is what rehearsals are for, and why they are necessary IMO.
It depends how quick the guys are. You might do quite a few gigs without rehearsal. Good pickup bands will have some members meet for the 1st time on a gig. The gig will be about charts, dots and busking and most punters would be none the wiser for all that. To maximise what you achieve at rehearsals, you determine the reference on the particular version and youtube is great for this. You clarify before what key the vocals are in... and you make any notes you need. You expect to pretty much get the song at rehearsal. But..it all depends how quick you are on the pickup... guys who dep and busk alot will get this very quickly as they wouldn't be much use on those types of gigs otherwise. I think the opening positions from the people who responded aren't unreasonable... and both parties may need to modify what they expect. Talking about it in stage 1, is one thing, getting people to get to stage 2 gets harder. You want to weed out who is wasting each others time. That is not a bad thing.. For example... just had a reply for a postion from a guy who has 6 years gigging experience... but what does that mean..???
20. Wording an ad is not that easy. You want to attract the most interest and then YOU want to sift through the options. Two things that you can't get away from...99% of the time, IMO If you are any good, you'll be looking at the money, and also, anyone any good will be busy...
21.
...but if an 'artist' decided to give his wares away for free, is that a bad thing..? An amateur gardener giving away excess produce, is that bad..? I don't think many are saying that musicians are expected to play for free, but they're certainly entitled to, if that's their choice. If one doesn't want to perform free, it's easily settled: one asks to be paid. If that works, fine. What's the problem..?
My problems with that is that it sets a precedent.. There are too many bands playing for free..and every pub wants a charity Beer festival.. and you could spend all summer doing charity gigs..in fact it seems a lot of bands do. The bar takes money..the staff get paid, the vendors of stalls get paid, the bands don't. I avoid these type of gigs. I agree it is my choice, but there are TOO many bands who play free and it impacts of everyone else...IMO.
22. Not sure I would call that stagecraft ... I just call it being more visual which may or may not be a good thing in the context of the band. I make sure everything is together and that is my primary role. The singer and gtr can jump about but no one misses it if they miss a cue..
23. Nope, not unless I need a chart. My time is very good ( IMO ) and I know when the bars shift with certain drummers. I don't need to count that.
24.
Unless you actually have a contract, all that will do is p*** them off so that they don't use you in future and get you a reputation for being unreasonable! Best to write this on off as 'one of those things' and move on...
Of course, you aren't going to bet one night against many...but in the world of deps, you pay once booked, IMO. If this is how they handle deps who dig them out of a hole, then they are the ones you don't want to work with again anyway.
