1. Depends where you can position the bass in your mix.... do you want it buried or mostly obscured by the overall band sound or do you want to hear every nuance and note... and you can't determine this all on your own...you have to have the other members buy into everyone having their layer. If they are compliant, you will stand a very good chance of sounding good collectively...if they are not... then you will always struggle and odd rooms will defeat you easiliy. And if you allow volume to creep during the latter part of the set, you'll lose there as well. In that sense, mid scoop or hump doesn't matter in the 1st instance...but becomes more critical with every stage of getting the band individual frequency settings or layers wrong
2. I listened a lot but the guys I came back to and would still check out today, would be A Jackson, Miller, Washington, Will Lee.. Plenty of honourable mentions on the way and I've nicked from loads more, but I like the way these guys can drop in, be seemless but still have their own style in a variety of other situations. Of course, that is what made them great in the first place but I am not so interested in the one trick pony type.
3.
I'm beginning to think I'm a soft touch. I've had a couple of photos published in a book that a friend wrote, but I didn't charge him for them and was happy with just an acknowledgement. I've also provided photos for other publicity purposes, though some of those were for a charity so that probably doesn't count. I must learn to become more mercenary! Hey, I wonder if we could start charging BC for the benefit of our posts - without us it wouldn't exist!
That is what forums do... they sell the collective knowledge that is offered freely, draws an audience and then sell that audience to advertisers... which of course, you know A friend of mine is becoming a very in-demand photographer...as he is really good with a great eye..IMO.. and he gets asked by journalistsn if they can use a pic or two... which he is/was happy to do... but he keeps an eye out for where they end up and for certain journos who have taken the p... he charges them to his choosen charity and you should hear them bleat, even though they have effectively sold his pic... in that they got paid for the article that included his pics... When that happens too often, you get harder... but for a friend to do that is really not on. The good news is that he is in such demand, that he may well give up his business and go and do the thing he loves...
4.
I can understand that, but if it was me then I think I'd just give up gigging at that stage. We have turned down gigs for some of the reasons you mention, except the money one.
But then I would have missed some really worthwhile gigs on good stages..great crowds and a real buzz and alround blast. We have found you can have all that (mostly ) and get decent money. It just depends how picky or not you want to be...... I do tend to think that if we gig enough and hit most, if not all our criteria, and make the decent money, then people also agree with us. To get paid well to do a gig is not a garauntee that the band is any good.... but they may be deemed worth the fee..or can get one, but I do consider it insulting that anyone could consider they wouldn't offer us one...
5. Don't know if it is unique or not, it is just that I have done enough gigs and they aren't the be-all and end-all for me. It has to be more than just a gig... as it is a lot of hassle. Even a pub gig is 4-5 hrs of our time so we are now picky about which pubs....so not enough room, wrong audience, not enough money, too far, bad load-in are all reasonable excuses..
6.
Doesn't anyone here just enjoy playing for the enjoyment of it? mercenary lot!
There has to be something in it... big kudos, big money big enjoyment, but free pubs/venues, free beer festivals are no-go's.. for sure
7.
What's the problem - you're not actually going to play IN the rain are you? That would raise more important questions for me than which bass might get wet.
This................ if the stage is not tied down and waterproof, then no gig at all

Going bare

Most casters on bass cabs are a pain, unless you get proper manly and large ones that normally live on flights cases..and then you know that they wont buckle or fall off easily. It will still make rough surfaces a bugger tho...
9. Not much... got a couple of cabs that are surplus, so I am looking into replacing them... and hopefully at the same time thinning down 3 cab rigs to 2.
10.
Tonight, another new venue, The Anchor in Faversham. A bit further than we normally go but another good gig. We are on a bit of a roll at the moment and I'm hoping we can keep the momentum up towards recording a CD.
Which band was that...? they've cancelled us for next week. Trying to find out what is going on.... not so fussed as we can't get the money there, but it was a very popular gig for us and we do well in the town
11.
Although if you take your time and buy second hand you can get a very reasonable PA for a lot less than that. Depends on what type of gigs you're doing. You don't need a £5K PA for the average pub gig! IMO of course!. And a useful hint I was given was to always set up the mix before you start adding any effects, reverb and stuff (hate reverb myself).
He did say small/medium venues though. I think band tend to scimp on P.A's ... and for the few pubs we do, we will just put the tops up... but there are tops and TOPS. You can count the band round here with GOOD P.A's on one hand, tbh...and the vox sounding as good as poss is something to aim for. If I was doing it on the cheap... I'd go for a decent Soundcraft mixer into Martin cabs...with decent power amps, That will cost you about £1500 min if you are very lucky to find them..and isn't likely to be the lightest... Be careful with SH gear that will have had a pasting but can't really take it. If I've heard one band with a blown P.A ..then I heard a fair few. Sorry, soapbox here... but I really don't understanhd bands rehearsing to get it right, and then sound poor ..and it isn't the playing. It is core sounds being poor..... and if you get these right, the sound checks are so much easierf..AND faster.
12. Having said that a band is a communial expense, a good P.A can set a band back £5k easily enough ...and various band member can have that tied up in their own kit...so it is not so much who owns it, but who sets it up and who carries it
13.
A few beverages last night? G.
in a hurry this morning, sorry... never proof read it on here so I'll go back and edit it.
14. thanks... I think the tweeter idea is just a comfort thing... so will indulge and pay for it on 1st cab. The tolex options look great... but seeing them in context is everything. And thinking black/creme is safe option..as the pics are available in how it will work.. but the white and black as in your photo is calling hard... I will draft an e-mail/FB message in the next few days. thanks again.
15. Looks great. I was thinking the white/creme tolex would be a concern to keep in good nick as the main colour, but it looks so cool, all those concerns are out of the window.... I am just waiting to see a few more pics of the cover option on FB or the website to see how the work and then I think I am in. Also, it is unclear if the 1126 can have a horn as well as the 6"... or instead of but since I'll probably use two at some point, I can probably go one in one config and one in the other...???? Still the little things I am musing about. Keep the reviews, thoughts and pics coming.....
16.
Did you read the part in my post about the DI? And how can you possibly blame the sound crew if your amp fails?
Yep..it is their job to get the sound delivered to where it needs to go. Having an amp fail isn't an option...and they had a backup, apparently. It may well happen but it shouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things in getting the bass out front or on stage. Anything more than a tech spending a few seconds on it is a total fail...
17. Officially last of our summer gigs and this was at a Golf club. Was a bit worried about the age range, but it went really well. Probably picked up more enquires from this gig than any other and we have to convert them, but I can already see next year being pretty busy with the right sort of gigs. Now we go down to about 2 gigs a months and we have time to sort out a new drummer.
18. The key to a P.A is getting the Vox over everything... as this is what people who don't know much else, focus on when they listen to a band. If you can't hear the vox clearly, then the band is stuffed and therefore you have to set the band level to the vox. As for carting it all about, you should share it out amongst the band. I used to think the vocalist should own the P.A but it is too expensive and a communial use thing so the band should own, transport and set up the P.A If anyone has too great or total role in that, they need to be compensated accordingly. Our P.A takes about an hr to load-in and soundcheck accordingly but it is a full P.A.
19. After my excusion last week with my NEO's, I like the sound of the 1126.... I am going to carry the heavy 210's tonight as I know the load in and I want to see if the 212 does for the 2x210 as I am really liking the DB212. I can then get round to seeing if I trade the NEO 12's for the 1126... If I can get 2x1126's then if that takes care of everything, then I can really thin the cabs out. Gareth... get the camera out...
20. I think that is exactly who you blame if you have no bass out front... and on stage for that matter.
21. Even if you use a range of styles, I don't think you need to be treaking too much on the bass if you have put your work in.
22. If batteries drain in 2 weeks and you don't leave it plugged in then something is wrong. I had mine sorted by a gtr tech very easily and £20 and I change both basses when I remember, but typcally 6 months. Plus they both has passive options anyway.
23. I'm pretty picky with the sound I want to use... but I'll go with quite a few served up if it pushes me to hear and play different things. I also ALWAY want to hear everything I do tho... but there is something to be said for being somewhat 'buried' as you can get away with more. If I can hear everything I do ..then I like to think that translates out front...but that really depends, as we all know and there is only so much control you can have over that. I always remember my first 'solo'd track... I was mortified, but the sound mixed down ok... it was the rest of my playing that was the problem.. but these days I can live with a quality reproduction and don't always wnat the drums to hurry up and join the track Why do we think the grindy Ampeg sound was so popular... ???
24. yep, it comes down to it that if you are any good, you'll get work... era doesn't really come into it.. We are doing 21st birthday parties..which considering we are much older, that can be daunting, but it seems to work. I also find that a 60th party...which you'd think you'd run away from ..are people who have heard a lot of music and that will work as well. Personally, I hate the 80's...
25. Katie Leonne is with them these days
