1. I have a heavy rig and a lighter rig... I generally find out about the load-in before I choose which one to take. The one I am most keen to take is about 70lbs plus for the cab..altho it has wheels, plus another 60lbs per cab x2 if I want to go silly. The amp must be close to 60lbs. I am not keen to twist that lot anywhere and everywhere but it is worth taking to most so I put up with the load. We carry subs on the gig I'll take my heavy rig to... so a 2 man lift for the heavy stuff and that is it. I have a bad back but I manage it... I consider it worth it...others may not. My light rig is no 2, but the spec is good... I love playing rig no 1...that is why it is rig no 1.
2.
I have used those amps with the matching 8x10, weak.
The PV..??? don't know it. I assume if is a very attractive price for the rated output so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't very good at actually hitting that. The point about subs being a drain is true.... IME.. but why would you build that flaw in..esp if hititng 700 wasn't easy in the 1st place. But as I say... I don't know the amp
3. Altho I take plugs to a rehearsal, I would be most p**** if I had to use them. Besides, the P.A will struggle before anything else in the rooms we use...
4. I find running an amp rated at 700/4 in 600/8 and 350/8 cabs just loads the lower powered cab too much. I can get a far better sound with regards to cabs not stressing running the same amp at 600/8 cabs.... I have the volume in the amp to spare, but the cab...altho drawing less watts into the resistance, still put out ALL the volume I need. Ok, so I run it with higher output, but the amp can do that all day... it doesn't worry about the load. I don't know how the PV behaves when pushed
5. I think the 210 is the problem.... I think you'd be able to push the 600w cab harder if you didn't have the 210 in the loop. In this case, running into 4 ohms isn't helping, so run hard into 8 with the single cab. With 700 on tap..??? asuming ratings are good... you might capable of 500/8 and if that isn't enough in a small venue then I'd be thinking the gtr is the source of the issue. Single gtr bands seem to have gtrs who think they need to fill everything and have a rig to proove it.
6. Light AND cheap is tougher. 40lbs for a cab isn't heavy but it may be too heavy for some. 2 single 12's would be a good way to start in terms of light units and the Bergs NEO's would come in around 30lb, IIRC. EBS Classic 112 are ok... but I think you know where they have skimped to make the price. A friend who has them says his Ampeg 410 is far better. For keen prices and better kit, maybe look at Epi UL cabs that crop up in the classifieds here. I know there is volume AND volume but I don't see the point of single 12's... as I can't seea gig that they would do, bar the jazzer. But then again, I don't want a cab straining to get the sound out either, so I'd always be thinking a pr. Haven't heard the GK versions, but the price gets them noticed. Brand new... considered top end light 112's are going to cost easiliy £1000 plus, I think.
7. Slap done well isn't that easy... but you may be able to convince if they don't know what they are talking about. Most basses players don't have much of a take on it and are stuck in the same vien as the style they learnt from. There is a whole host of variations of slap style IMO, so they aren't likely to be that clued up... the gtr will delight in showing you his slap chops anyway, so anything that can move the track well will be enough... Nobody wants a solo over a groove all the time. so a tasty fill in bar 24 is the extent of it. And if they say funky and mean slap... well, you might not want to join them in that case Anyway, did you get it?
8. I have a guy who does all our repairs and he hates them.... some of that may be because he thinks they may weight a ton... but once inside them, not too many kind words eithert but I suspect that is because he does think they are easy to work on... I recall a 400 and 1516 rig that forgave a multitude of sins...and it was a great sound at that time. but I didn't have the load-in. Today..?? I suspect there are better alternatives.
9. Not sure on this 'hearing thing right'... I mean, who in their right mind would say that... seriously? And who would take any notice...? People have actually said that to you guys and you aren't still on the floor laughing..???? FWIW, I've heard the same sentiment as Gaf's post said over a good few times but I don't think many can be bothered to repeat it here... and that is their choice. As for sell the Bergs..??? hmm, I can use AE112's and I think the CN112's are enough of a step on, to make me think about replacing them with CN's..... but they aren't my go-to rig anyway, so I can't see me doing that. I'd be more tempted to go TKS 1216 if the Bergs are on the way out... One point... the Berg cabs can barely fit a rack on them...so that counts against them as well.
10. This is THE amp IMO. Very good price.
11.
In absence of Match of The Day I think I will be watching this - and looking forward to it too.
Good call
12. I'd say no, although the 400 series was classic, IMO. But if it works for you, then you'll pay the price... and that is the way it should be.
13.
Looks are obviously important to you which of course is fine. But accepting carpet is acceptable because everyone went that way means if manufacturers decided acrylic was the way to go then you'd change your opinion and suddenly accept it?! I don't believe you can knock the website. It's easy to navigate, clean and does what it should, better than other premium gear websites in my view. Orders do appear strong, but this company has driven a lot if r and d over the last couple of years and offer a unique product And component. You pay for that, and people are obviously prepared to pay the asking price for the product offer.
The carpet was just a fluff magnet...which was my main objection. The cabs I ran for 15 years all had carpet on them and looked pretty clean still when I sold them...but as a finish I didn't think it did that well over a few years. I've had plenty of crap looking cabs ..either because they were wrecked when I bought/got them or I didn't look after them at the time well enough. Nowadays, my cabs work just as hard, but they all look pretty new. I will intend to keep them like that............ even to the extent that I am mulling over an order of a pr of TKS 1216's in white.. FFS...!!!!! Why white...? well, they look the business, and this from someone who really rates substance over style... but I don't mind both... and that is worth a premium to me
14.
Nonsense.
yep... have to agree. Stage sound is massively important to me.
15. Carpet on a cab is a bad idea... but they say it wears hard. Ok, still didn't like it but the mass of makers went that way.. Thankfully, Berg and the like went off that idea. The look of a cab is important. It is an image game as many posters will tell you when they say they like to see a band engaging with an audience, jumping around, enjoying themselves. They'll spend money on a website, band pics, promo CD's lighting... all sorts. Why wouldn't that thinking extend to gear onstage? The cabs still have not got beyond a very poor knock-up in a garage. Bite the bullet, get a cab designer in and a proper cabinet maker to make them. Gen 3..... ??? still look bad DIY to me. While you are at it... get a decent website. I'd ask ...if orders are healthy, where the money is being spent, but hey, what do I care? I enjoy threads like this...just as well. there are enough of them.
16. BIG power magnets on the amp and ceramic cabs do it for me. I can get close with a lighter rig but it isn't the same and it is obvious in comparison. I understand the need to go lightweight but am glad I don't have to adhere to it.
17.
............... This arguement is done to death and always ends up the same, varying opinions about finish and the clean vs. Coloured crap. .............
Are we surprised though... ?? you look at the numbers of threads in this forum about Barefaced cabs...? Not sure anyone wants to hear what cab they have ordered to be delivered in a few months time ( or not ) over and over again.
18.
I think that's exactly what some people think
I think this is quite close to the truth... a lot of people just don't have the style or technique to play with a very clean sound. You could go see/hear a lot of bands tonight and hear quite a hidden sound. I don't call that all bad... but there is not much of room to alter things and that is because of the way they play..and like to play. As for hearing 2 sounds out of a rig as implied..?? I don't get that. You want to know what it sounds like ...and be comfortable there..and then you want it to stay there..pretty much ..through the volume gains. That is the whole point of getting the sound. I'll regularly play my basses at a low volume at home..settle on that sound nuance...and then it is the same when I turn it up at the gig. As for how it plays around in the mix..?? It doesn't. it is the same. I don't have to alter my sound to get heard.... and if that was ever the case... we'd be having words post gig as someone would be pissing around. Fortunately, I don't play with people like that, often. When it comes to the mix/sound of the band... we have done all that. The core sounds are good...so as long as we get them..and the most variable is the drums... we sound good. IMO.
19.
From a purely personal point of view I think seeing a BF in the flesh is really important - especially if comparing to a Bergantino. The quality of finish is leagues apart and really puts lots of people off. I genuinely can't understand why BF persist with the covering materials they use. I've never known a brand of speakers to get such a 'marmite' reception. People here on BC seem to love them but I meet so many people in the 'real world' who've bought some on spec and then sold them really quickly because they disliked them so much
I'd go with this... so you really have to be sure you know what you are getting. Outside of this forum both marques aren't that well known....IMO... but the finish of the Berg's would make it easier to sell for the money you'd want. I think the CN112's are stunning cabs in the flesh and sound great as well. I have used Berg NEO's...and a good few other NEO's and I am not massively convinced but the CN112's are great.
20. I think you have to take responsibility for your set... and maybe a real young set would rather go to a club... or maybe they HAVE to go to a club. I'd rather a band tried somethng different as there is too much of the same old, same old ... I don't know if that would work round your way.... but as long as you stay off the old duffers 80's circuit... you'd stand a chance round here. You could...if the band works..skip the pub circuit and go straight to clubs and parties. At the end of the day, it depends which market has the most desposable income and get out and see bands in pubs. We find pubs a limited game, really, but plenty of people seem to afford to spend 5-10k on a party. You need to know how whatever scene you plug into works and what it will bare... I like your thinking.
21. I started the video and found myself skimming through it... all done in a few seconds. Not for me.......
22. Must be just me then................ I think the isolated track is awful... the mixed tracks works. Not a fan of either KM or KE but together it works better. Maybe they really needed each other at that point in time.
23.
IMO you can definite learn to groove.
Depends where you start from... I think you can get better... but this is one of those innate skills/qualities that some people can put miles on and others can barely cover at all. I think people can learn to riff far easier but I've never equated that to a groove. If others do, ok...
24. yep..agree, NO. The thing that defines a 5 is the low B.... and you could go through all that and end up with a dud. I don't recommend cheap 5's for this reason and even Fender made their fair share of duds for too long...maybe they still do... but if you are doing this on the cheap... and you are, IMO.... set your sights on a £300-500 5 from a known maker and test it. If the B is wooly..and a lot are..then move to the next one. People will tell you a decent set up and new strings can do wonders...and sometimes they help a lot.... but why on earth hasn't the guy selling the bass done that in order to sell it...????? Chances are.... being a tad cynical here..... because it hasn't worked on that bass.
