1. You need to get people to come and see you ..and many original bands fail totally at this. Mind you...some covers bands do as well.... I don't see the point at all if you don't have a rocking crowd, that you build on and develop... but then I think you also have to get out of pubs as soon as possible, It really depends what you have got and how you want to play it... if you can catch people's attention, retain them and progress musically and financially, then go with whatever. I have to say I never have much sympathy with bands that complain that the promote or venue didn't have a crowd... it is as much the bands problem as the venues. This really determines how viable you are ..and how long you should continue... If you have good writers and a good band, then there is every chance you will get people to listen to you.
2. My A rig is a DB750 and DB212 and DB210 cabs and it doesn't go out on every gig due to it being too heavy (and too loud) and therefore you need easy access, but when you have a decent stage and load-in, then DB stands for the DOG'S BOLLOCKS . I generally aim to run an active bass through it but have also gone passive more of late. I don't need an EQ stage, as the sound is just THERE... This is quite like the big SVT and Mesa Blocks but I think it is a better bet than both..certainly for me. I would say the Aguilar DB is a modern update on the trad Ampeg Vintage vibe..and they do it better, IMO. I've posted this as I loved the sound I had from it last night....but I've not ever gotten anything less than a great at anytime.... To me, that is the defintion of a very good amp....
3.
Nothing says dad rock pub band more.
not as bad as 'The Grandads' .... local band round here.... but apparently they rock out..?? might have see that for myself.
4. DB750. Best around, IMV. not entirely SS as it has a large valve pre stage but the back end power is THERE... I've used most of the big blocks. I wouldn't say the EQ stage was in your face at all... it is more subtle than that... but any decent bass will shine through IMO.
5.
From having similar taste in amps as you, Aguilar may be worth a try. I tried one of the Tonehammers at the London Bass Show and thought it to be a more modern sounding Ampeg - was very impressed indeed. And probably weighs less than the handles on an SVT.
Aguilar have stolen Ampegs ground IMO.. and do it better. Here is hoping that Aguilar don't get too big and corporate and go the same way. Last time I heard, Aguilar still had a very very small team..despite seemingly a global brand...these days
6.
I'm 30 now, I'm never going to make pro, I play gigs with no problems, couldn't give a f*** from there on.
Depends what you mean by Pro.... anyone can get lucky and fluke a gig and make a living...but REAL talent is something else...
7. I'm not sure I'd go on before a 'crap' band.... that wouldn't really say too much. would it..?? so if billed with other bands I try and be supportive and interested....but if you soundcheck early and go on later...then you really don't want to be hanging around too much, tbh
8. I'd expect the correct cable to be supplied with an amp.... even though I have a good few spares...
9. I really don't understand the bit about not hearing ..and the ways people dance through hoops getting the cabs up to the ear, angled, etc etc .. A good cab, with a good bass and a sorted band mix... and these are just non issues, IME. I would say we are a pretty loud band and we rarely have any issues hearing all instruments. There is a danger we blow the mix towards the end of the second set...but that is about the only thing we need to contend with...
10. I have Bergs and DB's in various configs and the DB212 is my go-to cab. Awesome and all you need with a DB750. I am looking to thin my herd but the DB212 stays........
11. Are the usual suspects a club..?? I think you do indeed have a group of people who really don't want to read another thread about someone's BF cab as there are already too many saying the same things......and the fanbois are just as irritating a group as the naysayers may be percieved to be,. Wayne dude is right.... the cabs get hyped a lot for something that is a niche product...and not generally known about I could ask 10 bass players about them and I'd get 7-8 blank looks, minimum....and that would include a few bass players in a few shops.
12. 2x210 V 212..??? toughie. I used to love 10"'s and still run those types so I use 2x Berg 112's, 2xDB210's and a DB212. The best cab ...IMO... is the DB212, followed by the DB210...but they don't have the sheer oomph of the 212... even though 212 cab power is lower....followed by the 2x112's. So it isn't config, it is the cab... The 212 doesn't get hi-mid shy like the Berg's either...altho I don't EQ the cabs differently at all...which may be a tad unfair.
13. Difficult lesson learned. They obviously don't think they did anything wrong and it will be hard to proove otherwise As for a blown 210, the one speaker could have been weak and gone at some point before the other but that may still have stressed the other chassis... so you are going to have to check them both out. Expensive lesson...and possibly both speakers need repair or replacing. The only thing is, is that you will not do this again... not much help, at this point, tho...but at least you will doubtless have no compunction telling anyone NO.,
14. As for overruns..this is why we are picky with the pubs we do. We do a max of an 1 hr second set inc encores..give or take, so 30 mins on from that is just not an option. If it isn't agreed beforehand, it isn't something we will do. We aren't bothered about loosing a pub that would insist on that.
15. We have about 40 to choose from depending on the drummer we use on any given night, but play no more than 25 ever...as 2 x 1 hrs is our max set....
16. Had an Evo 500 thing, iirc... round here for a few days and didn't like it at all. Getting a decent sound at low volumes at home shouldn't vex it...even Markbass can do that... ( cheap shot and disreguard ) but if it couldn't do it then, I wasn't going to even think about putting in a discerning band situation. So, you could put me down as not a fan.. .. but enough are.. Having said that.... used to regularly hunt down a ABM 15" combo for hire when mine was in for repair. Easy lift, powerful and punchy and I would have bought it of the hire co...if they would have sold it to me..... but that was back then.
17.
You think you've got it bad, I own a Barefaced, a Warwick, and TC and Ashdown heads!!
we have a winner....
18.
Come on..... there's no court case! I never lend my gear. End of! It does get used as the backline in a jam, but I regulate the volume and tone. I have got up and turned the volume down mid number before now. Some jammers just have their ears painted on! The other part of the OP that stands out to me.... I would never gig with just 1 210! That's not enough, and my rule of thumb is to have more watts in the speakers than I have in the amp.
yes..agree with more cab than amp..and by some way..esp with bass and 10's. Single 112 and 210 need a lot of respect and I am sorry this guy wasn't up it...so it appears. And since I knew I could easily break these sort of cabs, then I am not trsting someone esle as you only need 1 idiot to undo all the other decent guys good work. Not sure 2x10" chassis would be less than £100...so I'd get a quote of the proper speakers...if you can find them... and bill him half..and take the the rest on the chin..and put it down to experience.. Sound engr, huh..??? yep..good one..!! NOTE... lots of chassis are bespoke or out of production ..and this puts you in a real position. You try getting...if you can find them..any SWR PAS speakers, for example...?? and when you give up doing that... you try and find out what model they are based on. One or two of the resident speakers guys on here like BFM, Stevie, Lawrence etc might know what is the closest chassis match..and a few others might be able to WINSD a few decent alternatives... so you need to be finding that out. So, do some basic research on new speakers and how obtainable they are and then post here a new thread if you come up blank sourcing them. just my 2p
19. Also want more cab power than amp power. Bass is brutal on speakers so I want the cabs pushed but not overdriven. Watts are not the garauntee that a cab will handle what is thrown at it...only a an indication...IMO.
20. Newtone will make me a custom order... but I keep their gauges and just ask for taper on all 5 strings. I also order a batch and they say it will take 3-4 weeks. Loving their strings and service atm..... they have surplanted DR as my string of choice.. Plus they are local UK
21. No.... We don't do requests but we wouldn't be above taking on a song that someone suggested if it was the type of song we go for... We'd get it to rehearsal and go from there. The requests we might do, is if someone knew we did a certain track, we might add it as an encore..if it was that sort of number. But generally..the set is written ..and that is what we play. But...having said that...if we do a special gig... and they asked for a song...seeing that they'd likely know our sort of style...we'd consider that for their gig..but we wouldn't busk it there and then. We aren't a busking band, in that sense.
22.
Everybody is being too literal. She may not know how to describe what she wants, but she knows there's something she doesn't like. That can't be ignored. It's like when musicians say "the audience doesn't know what's good." Oh yes they do. They just may not be able to articulate it. Perhaps, "too clean" means too bright or too thin or too punchy or nat fat enough. Who knows. But don't discount it. Listen and learn.
But that would put her opinion to the fore of everyone else's...which may have been a good thing...or just as much, a bad thing. Not sure an audience is the final arbiter either...... in terms of taste. They may not know any better, so I think it is a musical thing to do to try and educate them. You do put yourself at risk and they may not like what you are trying to say...and you certainly need enough of them on your side,... as you have no gig without them, but if you aren't taking risks, then the band isn't going to be very interesting, I'd say. It is a fine line..or else you just rock out to a bunch of Thin Lizzy hacked tunes ....
23.
Like most things in life, it's always more complex than that... Would have ended up binning everything in the set that wasn't rock, which was probably what the band leader (drummer) wanted anyway. He would have struggled getting big paying wedding gigs, which were what he wanted to do. I gave up... You can lead a horse to water.
yep.. I think you got to the right conclusion...... it was never a viable situation...
24.
Indeed. As was the case before the internet. It's a life experience thing.
Yes...it is all quite simple as far as I can see..... if you don't know then you need to get a reference you can sort of trust or not argue against and build up your own opinion ...then if that other persons opinion doesn't stack up with your own newly aquired experience or thinking, then you have your won building blocks... But the flip of this is that some get it totally wrong as well.. So..as I said... does it matter...? people either work it out for themselves or they don't and this will determine their own standing. Everyone has to learn but you should choose your teachers/influences/references carefully... and mayeb the internet nowdays is not the place to start. Getting in a band..getting good enough to play with better people, and then moving on from there as you may leave them behind is the way I'd try and do it... Which is why I don't form bands with mates and am not interested in re-forming old line-ups ... especially ones that have run their course..
25. Then you should have binned the song as your band ( collectively ) couldn't play it...or if that type of music was more important, you should have binned the drummer... or whoever else was holding things back IMO. The thing to get right at the rehearsal is the decision on whether the tracks works within the context of the band..
