Its a common theme here...so ..you pay a good price, why these silly annoying things that ruin it. Cheap and cheap is one thing... but cheap and expensive..???

I'd match it with a GK head...
................. at this point I felt BC was not the place it used to be. I'm careful now to who I sell things to. I am a good hearted person, and will let things go a bit cheaper to help others, but I will always check posting history now, and if I think it's just some one buying and selling they can look elsewhere for a bargain. They are doing nothing wrong of course, I just won't sell to some one I feel is just in it for the money.
Dave, yep, I understand the difference between business and a supposed community and if the transaction had have been on a business type footing then that is the way busniness is. I would say more than a few sales per year makes it a business deal and you need to pay for that privilegde, less than that and you get a reduced or free go.. That is a community to me.... It is a hard thing to quantify, .........Am I worried about £100..??? no, it is the whole manner of these things and the way the thing was done Anyway, I don't sell much but I do see the guys posts and read them 'differently' now

hmmm... Sold some stuff on here quite a while back and the guy told me that was the best offer he could make. I let them go for a reduced price (£400) and I thought he would be happy with the kit. A few weeks later they surfaced here with a hundred pound mark up...and I see he lists quite a bit of stuff. I wouldn't call him a dealer but I would think he does 'deal'.... Would I sell to him again... lets just say I would rather not... but that is just my perception of the place, here. Has it left a nasty taste..??

I'm talking about new Subs, ..the range realsed in the last year or so.. or that is when I had the conversation.

Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
JTUK replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
But basses are wood and bits so if I put a ding too many in one, I would go and get it repaired just like I would my car. I don't see the point of basses sitting at home.,myself. I've invested/brought them so they do a job for me..... and to that end I no longer hanker after fancy AAA tops,...altho I do have one but it still goes to 95% of gigs. I keep it because it is a nice giggings bass. -
A rep was most keen to tell me that the Subs were pretty close in quality with regular EB's.... really..?? That is MM in trouble then..... IMO. I recall MM of old and my MM was one of the best basses I've owned.... I have to say that I am not a big fan on EBMM that I have come across lately so .. maybe I just don't get them these days... but I would not like to to think the Subs are indicative of todays MM basses. That would be quite a blow..

I play both of mine ... I don't expect to loose any money on them...but then I don't expect to sell them any time soon, anyway so I don't really care -
Did Kingsfest and there was enough rain before hand to call it off.... I lost a number plate driving through puddles... more like ponds in the road...!! Turnout was respectable considering and they posted good figures with the charity. AS with all these things, stage sound less that ideal, but all the bands sound very good outfront. For an inaugural event, I hope they were encouraged to do it again... Off to a blessing this afternoon for a couple who come to a lot of our gigs... best play their fave numbers...
a bass is worth whatever someone will pay for it.
Not the sales tactic I would want to follow... Never liked the "they can afford it, so they can pay it" ethic. It should the same price to all.....not just a certain price to a richer person..and less to someone else...

Phil Collins with George Duke. Average White Band Band.

Too sloppy...I think he hits the beats, but just not in the right way. Never feels right... which is not so critical in his proggie arena. -
Very much depends who it is...
................ The PA industry went throught a similar kind of thing several decades ago when the plastic PA cab was introduced. Most of them make the singer sound like he is singing in a bucket, but they remain popular - especially with female vocalists. It interesting to note, however, that PA bass bins are almost without exception made from 3/4" stock because that is what has proven over many years to be optimum. A good, modern conventional cab will always outperform a modern 'lightweight' cab of equivalent price - especially at volume.
Indeed, I have found this to be true. The wooden cabs fetch a premium and side by side, you can hear the difference....which is why we use wooden cabs for P.A....even the tops.

Never liked Phil Collin's playing.... but George Duke..?? much missed monster...!! -
........................... I personally don't see the point in getting a bass custom made by some small guitar firm, especially if it's already a popular design, like a jazz bass, for their skills or because of the special woods that they use.
See, now that is exactly why I would get someone to make me that bass... Of course, it depends who is building them, but I would expect a FAR better build, a couple of personalised design features, or a custom config....choice of components. And if the guy had done a good few before..which is why you would use them so as not to be a guinea pig, then they should be able to give you an excellent bass. If it doesn't look better, feel better, sound better and play better all round than over 95% of stuff off a production line, then you have gone to the wrong guy...
-
which ones..?
-
I have a few people come round and play on one of my basses. They don't put them down very quickly..... or no here near as quickly as I give up on theirs... That says it all to me....... well, actually it doesn't, I don't really care if they think they have a great bass or not, but if they asked me..?? just as well they don't, tbh...!! Having said that.... the better name on a bass is an indicator, it is not gospel every single time. But good basses tend to stick ... they don't get moved on so quickly.

I agree there is volume and volume. I haven't found any NEO's that work ... but that is not to say I don't gig a NEO rig and it is more than half decent but its appeal is the weight and footprint. It will do most gigs that I do and only struggle on a few, but when you introduce a rig that is the FULL beans, then you know the difference. When I settled on my light NEO rig, I knew it was almost there... but also that there was spmething not quite ..erm...!!. My choice or decision was was it something I could or would comprormsie on? For a lot of gigs, I do exactly that, but for the most discerning gigs..from my POV, there is no real choice and out come rig NO 1. And it is quite a way in front... IMO.

I'd put Vanderkleys in a league about TC RS but you'll need 2x112, IMO With the best wish in the world 112 wont cut it in that competition, IMO
-
Make sure you know all you need to know about Laney. Hear it a loud volume if you can as there are certainly better cabs out there. I'd say the same about Ashdown as well as a few others. Try them all that you'll consider at volume, is what I'm trying to say
I've been using Ken Smith Masters recently - stainless steel, nice & bright, good 'tension' and last a fair while. IMO they sound as good as DRs and other more expensive brands but only cost £20 a set!
Good strings, agree
-
In the studio, you need a good sounding passive bass. The reason for this is that they aren't going to complicate things and they may well be the start-off point for the bass sound...you may not get much further on most dates. I wouldn't take it personally...it isn't about you unless it is your track/album/cash..and your call.

No one is going to be able to talk on someone else's behalf if any chat was off the record.. Best leave it to the two protaganists involved.... thye got themselves into this...I am sure they can get themselves out of it.. They both have a pretty decent vested interest to do so..??? IMO.
-
Chris' Lull sounds great. I'd go with a PJ config as well...just for a bit more movement on tone between differnent band gigs...and a PJ would be easier to move on...but the first thing I'd do is stop the singer chopping and changing key on a whim. I am all for facilitating the best out of a song and vocals, but it stays in the key that works, not the one he can't remember how to set up for.

add same 210 and get a 410 config that you can split down if you want. You end up with the same sound but bigger... and louder. As the impedance comes down, the amp can produce more from the impedance. So with a LM amp, that is potentially 550-550w..???? win-win-win...!!!
