Would always have a 210 over a 15 myself. A combo including a 210 is not a bad start but I wonder how capable these things actually are in the real world. For example, the Markbass 210 combo sounds good at low volume... but doesn't/can't carry that at louder volumes. Adding a 210 under that will enhance it GREATLY, IMO, but only you will know if the single 210 combo is acceptable soundwise in your context. Not many pubs will supply a P.A and even those that do around here, they aren't worth using. Quite a few pub bands here carry a full range P.A which WILL include subs and in that context, if your stage sound is controlled, a 210 may get you by... unless you have keys. All these things/situations have huge variables to consider and you have to be reasonable about how far what you carry will go in certain rooms or venues. If you go outside, you'll likely have to consider carrying twice as much... As with most of these things, size, weight and carry seem to come before sound and so you should sort out the amp that you like/want and then pair it with cabs. Most bass players will need more than one option of a rig... so will choose things they can scale up or down. depending on the gig. Default pub rig, IMO, is a 500w top into 4 ohms and a 212 or better still, but more expensive to buy, 2x112 so you can do the jazz/acoustic session with a lighter carry.

A decent head for £500 leaves you with the same for a cab...and a 212 or 2x112 should be the minimum. If you struggle getting thru a loud drummer and gtr... you may have to mix them as much as you mix yourself.. Not a fan of too much process in the sound myself, as I think this weakens the bass and you need a degree of this to make the band sound work. I'd say stay away from class D and NEO myself, but if you need to consider weight then that may not be possible. But...along those lines, consider how much you can or would be prepared to carry. 40lbs per unit..?? that brings a lot of kit into the equation. TKS make a range of cabs that are light AND ceramic..search here for S112's My compromised thinking would be for something like a TH500 as the top, and TKS S112's with a horn. Not sure if that would all come in under £1k tho, so if it were me, I'd be prepared to spend a bit more for the right rig.

Too many rigs put out the required/received volume but do nothing to underpin the band. A full rnange P.A will help, but you might have to put up a weedy sound on stage if you use your boxy backline sound. Less of a problem if the stage is small but I think hugely compromised sounds like this do not help the palyability of the band AND bass player. For putting bass out there, there is no real substitute for surface area..then you get into amps being able to produce.. IMO. And I say this as I see and hear so many bands that fail at this basic stage. The reason Pub P.A's with subs are so popular is that they deal with this problem almost by default, even if the band themselves don't realise, the subs will or should, give them the depth of sound and seperation they may have missed in their own rig.
-
We sold our Thump as soon as we could... big, heavy and flabby. Now, I don't expect 2 tops and 2 subs to do too much. That sort of rig will do a pub very well and a small hall, but not much further. Having said that... there is something to be said for the P.A that runs out of steam before it hits the bar area as that is where people can get away from the sound.

The Vigo Inn is a regarded gig. Somewhere we've always thought we would like to do.. Not heard so much about it these days tho.. none of the bands I tend to know do it..???

I'd never contemplate a 4 and I turned down a 'gig' as the guy was so pre-desposed to wanting a 4 string bass. Apart from the physical differences, I think there is something missing and since all my work involves a 5..and you will get the same style from me on whatever gig, I see no point in chopping and changing. Totally at home on a 5...and there is nothing that a 4 would give me, IMO.
They have metal in their name though, lol
That is true... my more metally friends laugh at them but I question their tastes anyway... .. more like Queen and the other caberet bands..

Not a metal band

Nails short so they don't snag... and I am not sure the attack argument is that valid ..but sure, if you want a really agressive pick sound, go for the pick. I don't gravitate towards a pick style as it doesn't do much for me...Bobby Vega excepted, of course, but it really depends on your influences. You wont get a funk gig playing pick, and you wont get a metal gig with fingers. I know there are a few exceptions, of course, but try it at auditions..

I get to see quite a few bands... and even if the band are not so much for me, I'll go for the social occasion and also to support the venue as much as anything. I think the latter is pretty important... I've seen Steve bbb's band and they are very good, and they always have a lot of women at their gig which is a major plus. I may have seen Howling wolves locally but if I knew of more of the bands, I'd probably make a point of seeing them,.. We don't get many local muso's come to see us...or not ones that I know of..if they don't introduce themselves. The guys frm the more popular bands don't tend to come... maybe they are always gigging.. :

It has been good... I think we've got the right mix between Festivals, parties and a few pubs. - normally we don't take pub bookings on a saturday during the summer - and we have 3 really nice festival gigs in the next few weeks... and we've had to turn a few down which had we know the exact details ect etc, we might have taken them. We were free but decided not to run ourselves ragged over a weekend...but in retrospect, we should have made more effort and done them.. Still happy with what we've got though... Summer doesn't really finish for us until mid sept.
odd off topic question..... say I went and bought a RCF HD12a.... what would stop that (and a preamp) working as a powered bass cab?
One listen through...

Looks like a Carl Thompson to me...

Need a big stage and a big pub. We don't bother.

I had mine made when he worked out of Queens Park. I was close enough to pay monthly visits and he didn't have much of a headed bass template at the time so we had to discuss headstock designs.. I would go with tried and tested wood combinations as they work. Neck shape is critical so if you go very thin, I'd have graphite stringers, just in case... Try to get as much thought about what you want as early into the build as possible. Good luck

Well, I am sure it happens but we don't get involved. Re the 'charity' festivals that were deemed well attended ( sold out, their words ) and charged, around £5;00 per ticket around here, against £7:00 a ticket. The former posted ITRO £2k to charity and the latter £4k. The former had a free bill and the latter paid about 8 bands. I look forward to the free ones getting big enough to be able to pay their line-up in future....

Ok... I'd expect any warranty from the start to have those exclusions. I took it as the warranty would be limited from now on because it developed a fault.
All PF500's seem to have the issue, whereas others have commented that the PF800 seems more reliable. Haven't received word back yet, but I've been told I get a limited warranty when it returns which I hopefully don't have to use.
Why do you get a limited warranty ..?? how do they justify that. I'd not be happy with that on the face of it, and that in itself would want to make me think I don't want it back..and would want a return on my monies...??

Not much you can do about poor time. It would be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for that... It appears that it will do 800 into 8ohms bridged which sounds very decent to me, and 400w into 4ohms stereo. I think she would be very pleased if she could get £1k for it all. I've used it before and it was great stuff in the day. I preferred the SWR sound back then but very little between them and I felt people went with the sound bias they preferred from either. You were either an SWR fan of Eden Fan..??

Need some direction on some kit that a bass player friend owned and now his widow would like to sell them. For Sale is Eden WT800a Eden 212 Eden 210 The cabs are pre- XLT so will be the original Eden spec. That will help date the kit and she wants to sell them but does not know where to start. I just need guide prices and then I might either put them up here on her behalf or just do a shop commission. It seems like I might have got the job to prep them for sale so any help on guide prices would be appreciated, I will probably go and collect them, buff them, test them and store them. Thanks in advance

I believe Disney rotate their bands so they will know what the business does. I wonder if they do a matinee show as well... and if so, would expect them to be on cruise type money so worth doing..??? It will be tough to get in there as Disney control everything so the band will have to be good even if it can be a bit soul destroying. Welcome to the pro world of having to take all sorts. But sure, it that was typical for that band, then they'd not be invited back once the contract was over. I'd imagine the band would need to be good evening entertainment for the hotel guests onsite but there are also alternatives...but sure, a bit galling to be beaten out by kareoke

I don't know those tops, but you might try just the one sub to see how you get on. Taking 2 subs is a bit of a pain for the gain on some gigs..i,e the smaller ones, but you'd hope the low end extention of a decent sub would enable lesser tops to sound better, just because they didn't have the bass going thru them. We roll off 120hz off the tops and so they could theoretically be pushed harder but it isn't so much about volume, it is about the seperation of the sound. We think our new Yamaha 12 top and one sub will outperform QSCKW12 tops with no subs and the signs are good. Our choice was getting a decent sounding 12 sub that was quite small and light-ish... just to add a tad down below, rather than carry a very capable 18.. We felt we could justify the carry and set-up of the 12" on every gig rather dance thru hoops and then consider leaving the 18" at home. So, our default rig is 2 12" tops and 1 12" sub which is as easy a carry as we could find and the sound is worth it, from our use so far. We have reasonable expectations of how large a gig we can go with it. It certainly hasn't ruled out hiring a P.A and I doubt it will upscale much beyond a 250 people hall...and that is with another 12" sub. EV and Yamaha do 12" subs that are regarded well, IMO. If they aren't good enough you are looking at RCF 18"'s and probably close to £1k each..??? There is a pro argument..and it is valid, IMO, that heavy loud subs and active amps being rumbled about inside is not really a good idea..??

Obviously people have better things to do and see there. I doubt the band would mind much...they know the score, took the gig and are getting paid. I'd bet it was a residency.
