1. Boom... ?? no reason for it, dial it out. That is what EQ is for.
2. As soon as my nail catch, they are gone....so doubt this is applicable. The only nail I keep is my right hand thumb for a double thumb thing.
3. Not sure about the SM58 today..even at pub level you are beginning to see more and more discerning vocalists give it a miss.
4. Don't want to burst anyones bubble here but when I talk to retail outlets they aren't generally aware of this forum and the ones that are tend to be the more professionally orientated and they may get feedback from clients who haven't had a great time here. This might be in some way connected to the ability here of some to chase away a few top name players who have dipped their toes in and then decided it wasn't for them, So, if serious players don't take the forum seriously, then I doubt neither does the industry, apart from the fact .. and this is by no means unimportant, that you may have an outlet to 10,000 of so members. How many of those are very active will probably determine the real value, to them, of this place.
5. Some LL's will throw a bonus but too often they need a really good night to subsidise a bad night so whilst it is not always so obvious WHY the place has a poorer turnout, you can understand a LL keeping a lid on what he will pay. This is why the rosta is important as the ideal is to get the venue to have people that will turnout regularly even if the don't know the band. But people do like to feel like any band the pub has is worth going to checking out. This is why I'm in kind of favour of a hierachy in certain pubs so that that stands a good chance of working. Not as easy as that, of course, and sometimes in pubs you have to accept the gig is 'better/worth doing', rather than the fee. Pubs don't put around a jar as they may put upto a $ on the price of a pint.. but then that is also reflected in what the band charges. Punters wont pay twice in a non tip type culture..the price of beer is off putting enough..!! You can normally tell what bands charge by the 'tax' on the bar price. Simple equation around here is £3.90 a pint on real beer means the band is charging £350 which is higher end for a sunday 5pm slot.. A lot of pubs wont/can pay that fri/sat peak evening.. Basically, I think pubs work and the LL WILL pay what he earns... so he doesn't mind paying out his top dollar if he gets the great nights takings. If you know what £2k of drinks sales look like..you're golden..!!
6. You have to look at who is running them... as can de-generate into12 bars all night and a great jolly for the gtrs but not much for the rest of the guys. Basically, unless you have piano up you might get a little bored being anything other than a gtr..??
7. It was featured on Radio 2 the other day and I liked what I'd heard. Touring later this year as well. hmmm
8. Only seen the last few weeks so by no means have I seen them all, but I haven't heard one act yet without pitching issues. It may well be that the contestants are very very nervous, but then maybe they haven't done enough work before an audience. Not sure I buy the TV thing being the sole reason...and a few of them have picked woefully unhelpful songs for their voice.. Just an observation from what I seen..??? Once these audition weeks are over, maybe the picture will become clearer..??
9. I've had a couple. SM400 and Goliath cabs was very good but the bass was the weaker point compared to now and my current match of Sei J5 with DB750 and DB212 and DB210 is the best. If it wasn't I wouldn't have it. To have a really good rig and sound, each part needs to compliment the other. You really can't have bits of kit that fight and this is the most common mistake people make, IMO.
10. Or Aguilar DB...who definitely aren't wolly sounding
11.
I would think the Fender Jazz and Precision could be considered industry standards.
Indeed............ and I would have said that Ampeg SVT was the bass rig standard but I don't think that is so true anymore...
12. I had a conversation with Sei about the numbers they could make, and MP said they could do 30-40 a year, That implies they are still very labour intensive, to me.
13. Even the better beer festivals have camping here... and people will travel quite a way and pay £25 tops, for weekend entry, inc campsite and have a great time. No real H/L's which mean anything if you don't know the 'local' bands but still worthwhile, IME. This is becoming quite a market as many bands can't step up enough but any of the festivals that do this well/better can afford to pay better than pub money.. and you get a better/stage and P.A/light set-up as well.
14. With good quality cable and and good connectors, there shouldn't really be too many breakdowns. The connectors should be industry standard neutrik and Klotz quality cable. I've had one cable failure and it was replaced free of charge by the engr who made them as this was ( still is..? ) Klotz policy.
15.
Line6 don't make them anymore and as it says on the GAK link they're discontinued. ...and they weigh in excess of 40kg which more than most 410 cabs.
Is it...? moved it around the studio once or twice... didn't get that impression. I notice the weight wasn't included on the ad link tho.
16.
I really believe it to be a myth that cheap basses always have flubby B strings. If they do, it's down to some cheaper basses coming with cheaper flubby strings fitted imho. Put a .130 DR Lowrider on any bass and that B will gong like a grand piano and be useful all the way up the neck.
I'd bet it wont, but I admire your sales technique
17. Good venues come to good bands pretty easily or else they stick with a known entity. That is natural... but if the pub/venue has anything about them, then they have their ear to the ground and some LL will be very keen on feedback on the band playing down the road. Some LL's even go out and see a band they have heard a lot about. Making a pub or venue a decent gig needs a lot of footwaork most of the time and they will have to put a lot of groundwork in. They may even have to be prepared to run for 6 months at a loss before they get established, but they need to have a decent venue that people will go to. One of the 'better' gigs around here...from the bands POV.. is a decent enough place but has poor air con... and they can't open the windows, therefore this is off-putting to a lot of women. For this reason..plus the fact that he isn' the best payer, puts me off. We have been told by quite a few people that they wont see us there. Shame..because the LL is a music fan and has worked VERY hard so deserves his turnouts which are generally good. As a band on the rosta, I would like to see the attendences doing very well, as that helps every band, every week, but by the same token, that band has to be good enough. If the pub gets full houses, he will be able to afford ..and be prepared to.. the best bands around. These are the best venues. I have noticed, just lately, that the bands have been a tad heavier than the norm in our 'best' local music pub... so will keep an eye out of that pattern. I think there are one or two others who have their eyes on their own market...and if they pitch in properly and are committed, they'll do very well..and maybe usurp the current incumbents..?? For me...I'll only target 2 of the pubs in the townarea...for fri/sat nights so it will be interesting to see who drops out.
18. I think it is an opportunity for smaller festivals to thrive. Around here, 1000 plus attendences are about the limit of expense and logistics but they can be very good fun and worth doing. The bigger fests..?? I'd rather watch it on TV..no contest, IMO.
19.
I'm not talking about cheaper wood..I'm talking about the same wood...and there are high end 6 ers that do not have graphite stringers.
You assume the same wood..?? and a finished bass will be a known entity so there will be R&D there, hopefully so they will know whether to add them of not.. What you are talking about is complete unknowns in a lot of things...?? If you don't think these are relevant, or don't apply, fair enough..fill your boots.
20. The thing that concerns me about neck thru is how much wood there is in the neck... For anything over a 4st, I'd want graphite stringers if I was bothered about neck profile.. which I certainly would be... The issue with neck thru's..and this probably is more pertinent on cheaper wood, is how mature/seasoned and how good the wood is as 5 or 6 er necks could expect more of a load on them...
21. Low B's...it is definitive of the bass, IMO and not something that is necessarily sorted of basses that retail at £1500. Personally, I'd put that money into a SH 5... But something that can gum up a B st... is a 130 plus gauge. All my basses have 120 or less...and I prefer the string tapered. Works for me.
22.
I can hear the BF massive coming!.........Lol
There might be... other companies have to contend with 'issues' for and against.
23. 300w 15" plus 6 model sounds and doing it pretty well for £500. http://www.gak.co.uk/en/line-6-lowdown-ld-300-pro/23592 Must check it out for that price. Used it in the studio and it went down well with a DI and mic take
24. I think good seasoned sustainable wood costs... so I'd be interested to know what a £100 kit would actually get you. I have decent basses and the guy who put them together can do that very well... and that 'skill' pervades throughout... The last time I looked... a decent neck from someone like Sims would cost you £400 or so.. and that would be on the fancy side aesthetically, I'd think. The body ..?? something like £300 plus... without finish..? I haven't gone down this route as this bitza would be costing £800 or so before you start adding hardware and I'd never get the money back for a no name bitza..?? so I really cant see £100 kits really working.. But ..as Chris says, if ppl don't or can't see the value, they'll not want to pay for it, and they may well be happy with a cheap bass..and get all sorts of joy from it as it suits their remit.
25. Being comfortable is the hard thing... We had a very showy drummer...sometimes too showy... and the singer needed space to move about. Still couldn't say a word to the audience as that just wasn't him...but I'd be the most static but it all worked out as the music, first and foremost, came across. We didn't play as tho it didn't mean anything tho.. so that was 'our' connect' first and foremost. You need to find that something..and some people are funny, some are cheesy, some are engaging and some are dull but play really well but you need something. Recently saw the new local super-band and they got every one of these things totally wrong and I wasn't the only one to recognise it...
