1. A bit of both really. I used to try to come across as cool and arrogant as this was always the sort of persona I admired in my youth. After hundreds and hundreds of gigs I have something that is relaxed and natural now. I do think it is all about performance onstage - both as a musician and as an entertainer.
2.
Pics? Im pretty sure most rosewood boards have varying colours all over them, not just one consistent colour.
A couple of pics attached. If you notice at the end of the neck there is a section that is lighter and again around the fret markers there is a slight lightening. Any thoughts from the rosewood experts much appreciated.
3. I've always been a maple fretboard user with my instruments but recently I've been coming around to the qualities of rosewood too. I have noticed there is a bit of discolouration on one of my fretboards. I've lemon oiled it but there are still a couple of slightly lighter bits on the fretboard. Being new to rosewood I have to admit I'm stumped. Do I just reapply lemon oil paying attention to the lighter bits? Is it a problem or is there another way of addressing this? Thanks in advance.
4. Looks good but I am a bit cynical with Fender when it seems to be little more than an existing model in a different colour. I'm a major Fender user but they do keep reinventing the wheel (but what a wheel!). I was on Fender's website earlier and noticed that my favourite sig models are of bassists who I don't really care for. And adding my name to the out of touch club, I thought this was James Jamerson too.
5. Sometimes you get real gems at that price. Usually not though! Still at that sort of price I say go for it. I have a sub £200 acoustic bass that is simply awesome.
6. Thanks guys - it was genuine curiousity. I play 50/50 between pick / fingers, My USA P-bass has black nylon strings and they just naturally seemed to lend themselves more to fingerstyle. Sounds fine with a pick as it happens but I prefer the tone with fingers - perhaps I need to play around more and roll back the tone a little? I like McCartney / Beatles but don't play them much. I was aware he was a pick user but assumed he mixed it up a little.
7. I don't use effects. Occassionally I have the tuner pedal but usually it's just the bass. Two reasons, I don't like bass effects as a personal view and I don't like carting any more kit then I have to.
8. I can only see myself with a variation on a Fender P-bass. I'd go with Body Shape: Standard P-Bass Body Body Wood: Alder Finish: Black or white or a cool shade with matching headstock on the cool shade (my sig bass comes in several colours!) Neck: 1-Piece Maple, Thick “C” Shape,(Gloss Urethane Finish) Scale Length: Standard 34" Fingerboard: Maple probably but coming around to rosewood more in my old age. Frets: 20 Vintage Style frets Pickup: Seymour Duncan SPB-1 or Antiquity Pickguard: tort Hardware: Chrome with ashtray covers
9. Pretty much as the topic title says really? Looking at the video it suggests he does. I like the TruBass strings but must confess I have been playing them fingerstyle.
10. Welcome... and I like the name The Runwells!
11. Fair play! I'm not a Marshall user but it's always good to hear such stories.
12. I was admiring the same bass in Dawson's Reading only the other day. very cool!
13. I bought red purely because of the matching headstock. White was the second choice for me and had it had a matching headstock I'd have gone for that instead.
14. Love them all - very similar taste to me
15. I've owned both & they are both good basses. My view is try both and pick what feels right for you
16. I have the 1978 Bassman 135 and it's great (came from these pages too. Why have you got a question mark over the year? If you PM me your serial number I can tell you what year yours is. Anyhow, here is mine
17.
The Last Waltz is a classic, but I think the Rock Of Ages is a much better album. The Alain Toussaint arrangements and the horns really work well with the songs. Any Band fans should read This Wheels On Fire, Levon Helm's bio of the band.
I prefer Rock of Ages too. Always have. I like Levon's book but it's hard to look at Robbie Robertson the same again.
18.
Band fans should try and get their hands on a copy of the box set 'The Band; a Musical History....some really great, rare tracks with the Hawks, some grainy, but interesting film footage on the DVD and some really good photos in the book.
Got it. Essential stuff!
19.
I'm sorry that you can't find me. My Bassworld/Basstalk/Basschat User name is obbm. Yes I've been here for a long time. My Ebay Username is bassic-bits. Try following the links in my signature.
Thanks. I thought it might be you but wasn't sure if your username was because you really liked the cables (I'm guessing you do anyway!?) or because it was actually you. Next time I buy cables I'm happy to keep it in the family and will check you out . The Ebay search function was confused by the lack of a simple "-" character.
20. I appreciate that this thread may dry up a bit quicker than the Mark King or Flea thread but I think it's awesome that one of my genuine bass heroes is being discussed. I recently picked up his 70s self titled solo album on EBay for £21 that's rarer than Hen's teeth. It sounds like a natural continuation of the last couple of albums by The Band.
21. Well I can't find OBBM or Bassic Bits on EBay. I assume it's this link http://www.bassic.co.uk/ ? I don't know a lot about cables other than an old band mate who used to work at a hifi store taught me not to skimp on cables. I tend to use high quality expensive cable and often unbranded ones designed for bass and figure I can't go too far wrong with that philosophy
22.
Plug in P or J, play. Thats usually it. I dont like having lots of average options and a few good ones. I just like a few REALLY good tones.
I'm pretty much the same. Just centre the EQ on the amp and tweak it once I'm plugged in. I guess it's easier with the passive basses
23. I genuinely believe the Classic Series Fender (usually MIJ) are simply awesome basses. I would recommend anyone try those before buying anything else. Streets ahead of the MIM standards and serious rivals to even good MIA's
24.
Ampeg AUB-1 basses come up every so often, but you can buy a new repo from this guy http://www.xstrange.com
And Eastwood do a copy that I have often wondered about too http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Eastwood-Airline-EUB...=item5635105e55
25. What with the postal strike I'm a bit reluctant to send mine over right now but as you are a regular poster I'm happy to lend it to you when things calm down a bit more if you like. It's must see stuff. Here's a clip Danko is one of my favourite bass players. I love The Band and he was stunningly bang on. They all were
