You have to accept a certain amount of noise when playing P-basses through valve amps (my setup too). Have you got an earthing problem on the bass? If when you touch the strings / bridge / tone knob it goes quieter than copper tape is the answer. Otherwise it may just e that this is a noisy set up. You can learn to love the hum. Well I'm neither of those! Firmly in the middle, a pretty competent player without being flash and I'm sure many are the same

I'm half tempted to see Ace Frehley next month as his 80s show at the Hammersmith Odeon was my first gig. I saw Kiss on the 3D tour for Psycho Circus which was the original line up so I felt I'd achieved a childhood ambition. I'm sure the new line up will be better though!

The only lady sound engineer who springs to mind was the one at Honky Tonkin' Sunday in Camden who was excellent. We had one at a London venue back in the mid 90s who our drummer confused in soundcheck by speaking backwards into the mic and then shouting over to say she must have plugged it in backwards. Bless her, she checked!

Never owned one but we had loads of Westone Thunder 1A'a kicking around at school back in the 80s and I was a fan. I love seeing them as it reminds me of when I first started playing.

I bought and paid for a 51 reissue Fender P-bass back in 2004 from them. They charged the card and didn't have it in stock. 3wks later I got a full refund and no bass - only because I complained. Not impressed but reading this it seems that I was just unlucky. I bought that bass this year from soundslive and it is a firm favourite of mine.

Pretty much as the title says really. I picked one up a few months back and have been getting on fine with it, having even gigged a few times with it. However I would like to improve my right hand techniques and iron out any bad habits I may have at this early stage. I'm in no rush and probably looking at just a couple of lessons initially to put me on the right road. I play roots music / Americana stuff so really looking to learn in that style - techniques like double slap appeal I have to say. Thanks for looking.

Ex Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley played the Hammersmith Odeon on 19th March 1988 and I was there. Bass player John Regan fell over onstage and I was really impressed. My friend Robin who came with me wore an especially nerdy light blue jumper which killed any rock credibility we could have had but I loved the show. Looking back that band was a bit rubbish really but at the time I loved Ace Frehley and I liked John Regan as a bassist.

22nd December 1989. I was 16yrs old at school and we were the, ahem, band in the sixth form production of Cinderella! On the plus side we had an audience of 700 kids who had to be there. We were awful. I broke the strap to my, ahem, blitz boot and did the gig barefoot which was hotly debated for a long time afterwards. However we got to play school assembly 9 months later and became heart throbs to all the girls in the years below for a good 3wks until the school Rugby team won a match and we became yesterday's chip wrappers. Crazy days!

Welcome - I used a GENZ-BENZ amp at a venue the other week and was quite impressed (a real life saver as I'd blown a fuse which I couldn't replace in mine). In terms of coated strings the closest I have come is Rotosound Trubass which I really like

I remember the Top of the Pops appearance which had no bass player miming along!

Just to bump my own thread I have now had the nod from my wife to say that this will be more of a reality so I am now officially in the market for one so less of a feeler. Please keep them coming
