£30 surely a fair price? Neck pocket is 2.25 inches wide
What's the width of the neck as it joins the body?
Hey Rich, I'll measure tomorrow morn and let you know

    SOLD
Has the lacquer been stripped off the neck or just sanded to take the gloss off? If it's not down to the wood, a bit of T-cut will get the shine back. J.
It feels very woody but I'm pretty sure there is some form of lacquer still on it (albeit very thin). It's a refinish project for someone really, looks like it's had years of hard use
Looks like potentially a tidy Japcrap P project. Interesting 2-piece neck, don't remember seeing that before. Do you know if the body's ply or solid timber - or veneered butcher-block, like a lot of JapCrap was. Jon.
The neck construction is pretty cool, shame some did a poor DIY finish on it. I believe it's a veneered butcher block like my other one It's got a nice weight to it.

I picked this a up a while ago, I planned on giving it a refinish and all sorts but never got round to it. I have another one that is very similar to (might put that one up for sale as well) it and appears to be a 'Craftsman' but the logo is long gone. The previous owner looks to have poorly refinished it it in a matte black and taken the 'shine' off the back of the neck so it feels more ermm woody organic haha. Don't expect it to be anything special, it's badly refinished and old. Made In Japan. The plus side is that everything appears to work and the electronics seem fine on it and I'm pretty sure its all original. P bass style, metal dome knobs, 2 ply pick guard and I *believe* the pots are full sized. It's cheap for a reason but someone can something with it hence why I'm only asking for £30 plus postage (prefer for you to arrange courier) or pickup from birmingham. Or I'm open to swaps as well, anything really. Loads of pics...
  6. Found this quote in the 'Jap Crap Spotting Thread' (love that name haha), about a craftsman bass that was for sale on ebay a while back...
Not without playing it or taking it to bits, but it looks to be a nice mid 70s JapCrap P. I've seen a couple of Craftsman-brand JapCraps come up over the last few years, but I don't know anything about the brand or who made them. One thing - despite what the seller says, it isn't solid wood. Worst case scenario is that it's ply, if you're lucky it'll be butcher-block, or a sandwich with front & back veneers. The telltale big black oversprays on the contours are a dead giveaway. The only other issue is a dodgy nut - this bass would have had a Gibson-type rather than the Fender style someone's bodged onto it. Simple job to sort that if you don't like the way it looks. I'd say the £99 BIN isn't unreasonable. Jon.
7. Cool, thanks for the reply I wasn't expecting anyone to reply until later this morning since it's 1.55 in the morning haha. I was planning on removing the laquer on the neck back to bear maple. I'm gonna order up some 500k pots for it, some new strings and give it a good setup and see how it plays then
  8. I've been the look out for a bass (still looking for something else newer) but picked this thing up unexpectedly today . I have little or no info on it, all I've been told is that it's from the 70's and the neck plate says 'made in japan' on it. The neck is actually awesome, the fret work is very clean with no sharp edges at all and very smooth. It looks like it's made from a few pieces of maple but still very good craftsman ship on this. I didn't have a proper chance to hear what it sounded like through a bass amp since I don't own one and didn't fancy sticking it through my valve guitar amp but stuck it through my line 6 on my computer and it sounded alright and worked fine. Anyways pics...

  11. Hi, I'm predominately a electric guitar player (boooo!) but joined up as I'm looking to buy a bass to finish off some recording I'm doing and learn a thing or two Thought I'd say hi
  12. Awesome replies, really appreciated! I think I'll pop to a music store and check out all the basses you have recommended and choose based on what sounds and feels right to me One more question, active and passive seems to be a big thing with bass guitars. Can someone explain the differences / advantages / disadvantage / tonal characteristics? When I hear actives I automatically think of the likes of EMG's like in electric guitars (known for high gain metal pickups)
