1. Here's mine (l-r) Fender Precision 51RI CIJ 2009, Fender Precision 57RI MIJ 1989, Fender Precision USA 60th Anniversary model and a Fender Precision 1978 USA Keeps me out of mischief.... mostly!
2. Very cool - check my 1978 P-bass thread I posted earlier this week for another piece of late 70s Museum quality http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry672449
3. I think there are good practice amps out there. Good not great but I don't see why anyone can't achieve a fair sound. My thoughts are that I just try a few variations on the EQ until I find something that works for me. Bear in mind that what works in one room may sound rubish in another
4. Try www.starnow.co.uk. I've seen you on the Berks Live site too (nice tune but I'm not actively looking at the moment). Someody posted recently on Josaka saying they were tripping over bass players for auditions using StarNow so it may help you out. Good luck.
5. I just think Leo got so much so right in the early days, from teles and strats to Precisions and Jazzes. Then there's the amps. I know it's a cliche but it really was a case of being bang on the money. I love Jazzes but do struggle with the narrow necks otherwise I'd play them more. I've played a couple of nice Lakland Jazzes recently
6. Plus one on the EBay shops, I've done them cheaply for my last few bands. www.custompicks.co.uk is the main site of the EBayer I use
7.
Jakebass, Where are you based?
Beat me to it! I border NW Hants so this could be achievable. Thanks
8. I certainly agree that some genres / players are more popular than others on these fine pages. I recently felt I was the only one who liked Americana / Country / Bluegrass and a whole load of people came out in support of that (I suspect a whole lot more bit there lips!). One of my favourite records ever is "The Harder they Come", the Jimmy Cliff film soundtrack which has Desmond Dekker and a whole bunch of greats on it. Rancid equally are fantastic too. Music is like a big melting pot and I try and soak up as much as I can
9. Just got my dream 1978 Fender Precision so I have to show it
10. Now I might sound like a big head here but I got mine tuned up when I bought it!
11. Thanks to all!
I have a Seventies Precision and a wife who beat cancer this year - I thought I was the lucky one, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone. All the best, my friend!
Congrats to Mrs. Mickeyboro - I've met some amazing people through this forum and in the hospitals, many of whom put my story in the shade by comparison. All the best for 2010 and well done.
12. If you are still struggling at a later date I'm sure I can get you a copy.
13. Hey all - thought I'd flash this one. I've always wanted a Fender Precision from the same decade that I came from. Some years are more key to me than others. 73 was when I was borm, 78 was when I started school so I was keen to find something from between 73-79. One of my favourite albums of all time is The Band's brown album so I have always felt the Mocha colour scheme reminded me of that. Anyhow, stumbled across this little museum condition 78 all original. I've edited / hidden the serial number from the photos but this is all original. I even have the original thumb rest, receipt and letter of authenticity! In fact I also have the original strings with the purchase (not on the bass, they have been obviously been changed). All original pots etc!!! This year has seen my wife get made redundant, my Mum get diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's Diesease and then me get diagnosed with cancer. My wife got a new job this week, I'm cancer free and going through chemo and Mum is on fair form at the moment. This bass was a reward to myself after a stinker of a year. Drool worthy pictures to follow. Set up to my specs, low action & nice neck but with no string buzz! The tone is actually as you'd expect and it's about medium weight, not like some of the 70s basses. I've posted a lot lately as I've been off work recovering from the cancer but today has been a playing day. I'll post you these pictures and then I'm off to play more. I had some great offers of 70s P-basses from many of you (so there are bargains to be had folks!) but this is new blood to the site. And not one for resale! Enjoy More pics to follow...
14. I think this depends on what you are hoping to achieve. Certainly a decent set up is always good. If you've upgraded the pup already I'd see this as the priority.
15. I'm pleased this thread is being kept alive. In the old Bassworld days (pre BC) there was a much more anti Fender vibe to a lot of comments. I like to have a flatwound P, a roundwound P AND a P bass strung with Rotoswound TruBasss nylon strings. I agree with WoT that there is a growl as well as a thump. Every genre I've ever explored has always had a bit of inspiration for me with a bassist rocking a P-bass. I love telecasters and I love P-basses so I really do buy into the old adage that Leo got it right first time.
16. The G3 is the only one that is more my tastes, the first two are a bit too 80s for me. I perodically do EBay searches for Rippers and Grabers but I'm just window shopping really
17. Sounds like a lot of the jams I have had on the alt.folk / alt.country circuit. Great fun!
18. What do you have in the way of Americana & I don't suppose you have any Bluegrass? I'm looking for a couple of records by The Dillards and I also always keep an eye out for Dylan. Cheers
19. I do like the idea of this product. I like ashtray covers on P-basses so the technique is ruled out with the covers on. However I'm liking the alternative (cheaper!) suggestions listed here too.
20.
ask your local guitar shop. most chuck the boxes for big cabs
Depending on your relationship with them they are normally happen to obilge, Or try one of the industrial estates. Making packaging to fit around is the other passable alternative. Good luck
21. Massive precision fan too. Fantastic picture, welcome to the forum...even if you have been here a fair while lurking! Good luck with the beard too
