  1. I have an old valve Bassman head which of course has a guitar input and a bass input. I've actually never tried the guitar input but presumably would want a different cab to get a halfway decent tone. My thoughts are that it's all a nice theory but ultimately I suspect more effort for less results. Probably best off lurking around the 'Bay as they often have decent bargains cropping up, especially old 70s stuff
  2. The same ad was on Berkshire Live but has now mysteriously disappeared suggesting it has been filled. I jammed with that guy a few years ago and he was a really good player.
  3. I was going to offer mine for £150! Same model but different colour
  4. Good idea but I don't know that I do. I think I do with some basslines, in my head at least but generally I lean towards no. That said I can think of a few songs in the set where I most certainly do. I guess it must be subconscious
  5. I like the price but 95% feedback on EBay causes me some concerns. He's only got 3 as a seller and somebody wasn't happy (stating the fretboard was coming away from the neck). HE could have been unlucky but I'd want more reassurances before buying
  6. My double bass is chinese and plays fine for my needs. I know the guy at my local music shop and we set it up together so it plays well. I wouldn't be put off. I got mine off a straight trade and didn't spend a penny
  7. Nice colour Wayne. How smooth is the finish? It looks pretty professional to me.
  8. New Year Bump-a-rooney!
  9. Great thread. I think the 90s was more a decade of nostalgia generally so there is unlikely to be a 90s tone as such. I reserve the right to be wrong but that's how it felt at the time, as we faced the end of an era and the dawning of a new millenium. One term I used to hear a lot which I don't so much these days is "chocolate-y" but I think you got them all covered. We can all walk into studios and create the impression we know what we are on about! edited for my woeful spelling!
  10. Picked up this head as a spare for the gigs where I can't be bothered to lug around my 1978 Bassman to go with my regular (& slightly blurred in this pic) Ampeg SVT cab 115E
  11. How much?
  12. I'm surprised by the responses but believe them. I get mine into an MG ZS and can have a passenger too but hadn't tried my wife's VW Fox. I think sometimes it's surprising what you can get in the car, even if it does mean creative gear changes whilst driving!
  13. Cool. I'm sure he'll have loads of fun with it.
  14. Just remember it's rock n roll so there are no rules! I saw a great picture of Paul McCartney in Abbey Road studios with a capo on his Hofner bass - I don't play as well as Paul so can't stand in judgement! I wouldn't use one on a bass personally because I know the neck well enough now but I figure if good players wish to then there is no harm in it.
  15. Like Dandelion says it really depends on the paint. You may well be able to scratch off most of it with a fingernail just going steady. It's not always popular at home but I've used my wife's nail polish remover for paint removing in the past. Failing that go with Wayne's white spirit. Just remember try a little bit on a small area at first with whatever you try.
  16. I too have a lot of Scottish heritage on my Mum's side. My parents are in Scotland at the moment and my band are hoping to tour Scotland in 2010.
  17. Some lovely basses in there. The prices are a little high but I'm sure there are people who will pay asking price.
  18. I've looked into refins too just recently (just plain block colours) and the standard cost seems to be around £300 which means you really have to want a different colour if you get a professional job done. The results I've seen are excellent though
  19. Great story and mine is similar(ish). Who'd have thought somebody came to Basschat and wound up buying more gear?
  20. Pick whatever feels right for you... I'm surprised you weren't happy with the Fenders as they do some great basses within that price range but if you can't find the right one (or there are basses that are better suited) go for whatever feels good.
  21. I've played a couple and think they are good for the money. The Stingray copy stood out for me.
  22. Welcome to the site and welcome back to bass.
  23. My theory is enough to get by but certainly has gaps. I wouldn't know how to play over a jazz progression either to be fair. I'd like to improve on my theory but each teacher I've been to has thought my knowledge was fine - it isn't!
  24. I was in Dublin back in April - excellent city but I wasn't blown away by the music shops. Back then the exchange rate was at it's worst so any purchase would have been a bit silly on my part. We stumbled across a couple of guitar shops that were ok
  25. Welcome & echoing what Telebass said that is a great looking bass. Very unique!
