1. It's also worth mentioning the neck profiles of Rickenbackers range dramatically. My old one was like a baseball bat but there are ones from the same era that are like Jazzes.
2. I swapped them about before, never been an issue
3.
I haven't clicked the link but my only Gene Simmons fantasy involves a gun.
presumably not a sunburst gun?
4. Paul McCartney is very talented though

Hello

Welcome Dog
7. Hope you don't mind if I embed the original clip? I love the Supremes. Very much of it's era that clip with the band all bunched up together to fill the shot. Mary Wilson is playing locally to me in a couple of months and I am sorely tempted.
8. Back to the 70s!
9. We'd stopped for the year as we're not really a Xmas functions band and like to have the month off for people's various work & family commitments. However last night saw the singer and I head down the local open mic night that is run by our mandolin / banjo player. We opened with a tune off the last record and it was a disaster. The hall was half empty, I was the only one in tune and Pete (singer) broke a string. He quickly restrung and broke the string again. So we sat back down for a while. However we decided to play all the outtakes from the new album when we got back up. So after a couple of pints each we got up and did a really laid back stripped version of our heaviest song "Dragging the River" which I thought sounded superb and more than redeemed the opener. Then we all lept off the stage and came and stood in the middle of the audience to play my favourite "Don't Ever Hold My Hand". I'd be surprised if my acoustic dobro bass was heard by anyone other than me but it was an almost magical moment. One of those I wasn't expecting this to be any good situations. Of course without any mics it really drew the audience in. We finished up the night back on the stage with an accordian player performing The Felice Brothers "Whiskey in My Whiskey". And then we went off drinking.... Merry Xmas!
10. As is so often the case, this is a recent acquisition for me that is staying within the Basschat family. Fluffo had this for sale. I love Jazz basses, I love beat up mojo instruments and I struggle with the thin Jazz necks, preferring a Precision profile. So this ticked all the boxes for me & I struggle to think of another Basschat member who this would have been screaming out to have been bought by. It's an Ebony 1976 Fender Precision Fretless neck that has since been fretted (good job too!), old 70s cream Dimarzio pickups and an old 70s body (almost certainly not proper Fender & more likely some old Japcrap). I added the heavy flats and pickup covers to give it my own stamp. Enjoy...
11. Hi Tom - Welcome to Basschat

Hi

Hey Verb - Welcome to the forum
13. Pretty much as a basis you are right and just feel it around your band from there
14. Welcome to Basschat
15. Just an updated shot from today I'll update again if I get a new sofa!?!
16. If we had a sarcasm smiley I'd comment on the great pics
17.
Ed Friedland gets it right, plays the same Riff 10 times, different pickups, tone settings etc with 3 or 4 techniques.
Totally agree. Demo the gear not the player
18. I'm inclined to agree. It's obviously a style of playing but I always remember when I started playing. EVERY time I walked into a music shop to try a bass I'd always have to sit through some prat slapping the bass before handing it to me. Nothing against that style but it does seem to be over represented in some gear demos. There are other ways of playing something interesting.
19. I really like the Reghin, the Starfire and that 79 P-bass
20.
Our Guitard has been looking into Les paul copies and found a website where you tell them what you want made (Anything in the world is possible) and they will give you a quote. He specced a mahogany body and neck and with all the usual Gibson goodies except a case and they came to £60-80 a piece! There was one catch though at the bottom of the page the price difference depended on if you wanted the 20 or 40 foot shipping container full
I know the site and apparently it is majorly flooding the UK. More of a Les Paul thing than a bass thing. At the moment anyway
21. I don't think it's a problem though. I sold mine for a quick sale. I'm sure if you up the value to say £800 it could still sell. ultimately things are worth whatever we want to pay for them.
22. Just a thought but perhaps they moved onto bigger and better things Then again.... does anyone's musical dream really end in happiness and glory? Very few really
23. I'm skint but have a looks amazing bump on me
24. I bought the Barry Matthews book on the 66 Slab bodied Fender Precisions http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fender-Bass-Britai...149&sr=1-10 (for those who don't know) but financially it stops there.
25.
+1, if you're paying, it's yours and the band's call, not the engineer's, if you're not happy with the sound, he's not doing his job. However, you'd need to talk through the pros and cons with him, don't simply say "I want it this way". He knows his gear and his room, and may have learned through years of experience that in the majority of cases, the way he's working gets the best results with bass. He may not be right in your particular case, but you'll probably need to get him on side to get the tone you want. C
I'm kind of in agreement here. Ultimately I think studio engineers tend to know their set ups and we tend to know our live sound. Obviously if he is making you sound different to how you hoped to sound then it is an issue. However I always go into the studio with an open mind and even bring in CDs of sounds I like sometimes to get the idea across. The engineer changed a few of my basses around from what I had planned last time and the overall impression is that I am happy
