Interesting. I expect someone will now post something like: 'How dare Alphonso Johnson, Bobby Vega, Chester Thompson, Chuck Rainey, David Ellefson, Divinity Roxx, Frank Itt, Gary Willis, Hellmut Hattler, John B Williams, Kai Eckhardt, Lee Sklar, Rhonda Smith, Ryan Martinie, Stu Hamm and Steve Bailey imply that I can't have an opinion. They sound like my Dad. 'Who are these people, anyway, and what makes their opinion more valuable than mine? Seeing Crispy Ambulance at the Spurley Hey Youth Centre in 1978 was ten times more influential for me than the Beatles ever were'. I love the internet. .
I didn't see Crispy Ambulance until '79, I think they had sold out by then , they just didn't inspire But I am not sure that anyone is actually questioning the influence that the Beatles had, but when you open a thread with the statement.....
I have notices over the past year that generational issues come up and make for a lot of confusing discussion and misunderstandings.
......... and then come to the conclusion .........
My point, some of us were just born at a time that gave us wisdom and a perspective on rock that future generations would not have.
..it doesn't actually clear it up much does it
Yep. Hearing Slade Alive genuinely changed my life. Got me into music in a massive way. First musical heroes. Know Who Are, Know Where You're Going To..
Uh oh , I feel a 'my Slade curse' coming on On the other hand my Ambrosia curse is obvious for all to see

I think that it is just a case of sorting the levels to be honest , there may well be things that you want to discuss , but to record what you are doing now is probably a case of positioning , use the extra mics and getting the overall mix closer volume wise . The room sounds fine , the PA and the bass a bit quiet , I am sure there are some clever ways of doing it , but its trial and error from my perspective. A bonus to this of course, is that if the recorder is in an 'audience' position , then what it records will not be a millions miles from what the audience hears, so it might help with the overall mix , and you can then tell the guitarist to turn it down , and have the proof that he is too loud
To kill a tiger to make powdered penises, That is as mean as meanness is. It's taken me three days to come up with that......................
maybe , but it would take me three years to be able to croon it as you would in 3 minutes ! and even then mine would suck tonally
-
I have had a play with one and I think you really need to download it or even use headphones to hear what it has got recorded. There are the options with added mics that really help to get a mix if placed carefully , but our rehearsal room is pants for sound , its like playing in a big biscuit tin , and as I dont get enough time to mess with the thing at gigs , it hasn't been used for a while , but with perserverance , good results are obtainable
I'm afraid it is. It's happening right now, all over the world. Anytime and any place where any group of people are walking on stage with electric guitars. Blue
is the issue here that some see this whole discussion as a matter of faith , and that that in itself, is being offered as its own proof ?
The picture keeps repeating the opening line of a shania twain song over and over in my head. "Looks like we made it.......
I was thinking just the opposite
The injured pride and rampant insecurity peppered around this thread are - in their way - quite deliciously indicative of the internet's power to reduce otherwise uninvolved and uncommitted individuals to the silliest of observations in the cause of bolstering their opinions; none of which - pro or con the original assertion - have any real value beyond that of dark pixels on a light background. The original contention is very simple: (i) The Beatles had the biggest, widest impact and influence on their audience and on their peers than any other pop group before or since. That much is probably true. (ii) Those who were not present at the time will find it difficult or impossible to accurately estimate the nature of events as they transpired (iii) To have contemporaneously attended upon the Beatles phenomenon will have granted the observer / participant a specific insight into that particular phenomenon which will be denied to others who were 'not there'. Seems reasonable. (iv) Other epiphanies are equally valid on a personal basis but when viewed in a historical context may reasonably be considered to have been a less formative influence on the wider development of the popular music form in the 20th century I mean, none of this is particularly difficult to understand nor does it in anyway devalue the very, very special personal value of individuals who dissent from the view, despite the misapprehensions, misconstructions and maledicta that flit around the thread like bats at twilight . Frankly - and as I mentioned before - it seems like some of us are rather upset that Blue holds his opinion and is - moreover - laudably resistant to all efforts to make him cave in. The fact that some are resorting to ad-hominems kinda means they've lost the argument; but kudos to the constructive debaters. Nice work, Gents. .
Forgive me a little chuckle as the first actual line of the thread .......
I have notices over the past year that generational issues come up and make for a lot of confusing discussion and misunderstandings.
While trying to rhyme things with penis I find the whole saga quite heinous when you think of the trick you can do with a prick I'm not sure that its intravenous
Powdered penis..... What are you like????
I did some research on tigers , it is not good news for the things in the wild , they have some dodgy 'farms' in China breeding them for traditional medicines , they call them reserves , as they are not allowed to farm them , the way the Far East are killing them is criminal . The rich Chinese pay up to £500 for a soup containing a small amount of powdered tiger penis , it is good for virility according to 'traditional' beliefs
"It might be easier to get some help now I have a pedigree " I take it we're passed the bribary stage ?
Oh yes , many moons ago , these youngsters just don't have the ear for quality tunes , mind you I think the voters have only just caught on

That's the spirit Lurksalittle is a bit miffed with my choice of pic as she said I promised to use a photo of her and some mates dressed in horror make up , I did say I would do it , but that was the month before when she helped me , she bailed this month as she wouldn't sing the the 'powdered penis soup' line However, she gave a very quizical look when I said I had won , so I think she now has a bit more respect for her dads song writing prowess . It might be easier to get some help now I have a pedigree

Hi gents , I am not sure how that voting has gone for Bilbo , maybe the time delay in the vote distortioniser is playing up not to worry , Now don't panic , I have got hold of Paul via text , he is in deepest darkest Wales with little chance of tinternet , so I will start the thread up myself in an hour or so , I have promised to take the family out for a meal to celebrate this momentous occasion , and besides, I have a 2 for 1 offer I need to redeem before Wednesday , so upon my return I shall upload the September thread. Sorry for the delay , normal service will be resumed at the earliest moment, we will forego the puddings , though lurksalittle will kick off at that one .
-
Cheers guys , and thanks to Dad for the certificate , it shall take pride of place in my studio. I have sent a link to a picture for Skol , I hope it inspires you all.
-
Wow , holy Schmoley and everything , that I very kind of you all , and I have no speech ready I will send a pic through as soon as I can
-
To be honest , as long as you can hold a tune down, be close on the timing and get on with the others OK , your actual tone and sound is something you can work on to suit the songs being played , besides , they probably wouldn't know that you didn't actually mean to sound like you do

We did a last minute gig covering for a band whose drummer unfortunately had a heart attack on Friday ( he is OK , if a little knackered) the first set was a bit loose to be honest, though the smallish gathering were quite appreciative , but the second set had them all going properly and seemed to drag a fair few in, it did seem an odd night , but ended with a bit extra from the LL and the promise of extra dates next year , he tried to give us a booking before Christmas but our diaries didn't work out.

well played gents , excellent stuff
Quite so. And Los Beatles will probably have accounted for more of these epiphanies than all the other bands or artists put together. Not for much longer though. The Grim Reaper crooks his spectral, bony finger for the older generation and today's lazy, self-entitled, narcissistic floppy-haired youngsters are mostly too busy getting tattooed and drinking alcopops and indignantly protesting about the desperate unfairness of modern life to identify music as anything but a cheap, disposable personal soundtrack. In this misapprehension the young are greatly to be pitied; verily, it is a curse which will render the balance of their lives a barren, soul-less wasteland wherein they will wander in direction-less melancholy. But when they lay the sod over the last of the Beatles generation we shall be whistling 'She Loves You' through our decomposing lips; the last laugh shall be ours.
It matters not that everyone might not have an epiphany in a musical sense , as long as some do.
I've listened to all, but still need to choose three! Great stuff by all.
I just love your cakes dude

The daft thing here is that lots of people will have had musical epiphanies at various stages of their lives and they will be especially influential at an early age. Everyones experience will be personal and will awaken ideas and thoughts that provide an insight and even a passion that they can follow , this is a wisdom in its own way , but is very personal to the circumstances that brought it on. I think the argument about which artist influenced which artist is immaterial in this context, as is also the 'curse', I think that if someone has a 'hallelujah' moment with regard a performance or an occasion , whether it be on their own or shared with 10 million others , it is a personal thing. It is not really for anyone to be upset that they can't make us have the same feelings as them about the same event , but I am sure most of us will have those feelings about some event , so don't feel cursed , we may not actually have been there, but we've been there
