Just listen to them play...!
come on Chris, you know playing is subjective.. there are fantastic bassists, but the best is like saying my girlfriend is better looking than yours

Wasnt i trying to snag this from you a while ago Geoff.. check this out, they are great sounding basses.. this guy told me the pickups were stock, but the pre was an Audere. sounds amazing...i can imagine the EBS sounds just as good.. good luck with the sale...
This hits the nail right on the head. And with all due respect, I suspect aside from Mike Flynn that Geert is probably the best bassist on Basschat. If you've ever seen his youtube videos you'll know what I mean! So if he is ok with it...
so why are they the best then?

quote>>> Often the impression of dynamics comes from the space that the good players leave in between what they're playing.<<<quote.. bang on.. slapping for the music as Mr Washington does in that great tune says it all... there is a wide line between tasteful slap and lesser so.. i wouldnt agree that you cant get certain desired dynamics from the technique though.. ive heard some wonderful slapping from Randy Taylor.. you wouldnt even know he was slapping until you looked for it... Chuck Rainey on Peg is a good example too..
I don't slap much. I mainly widdle. But seriously, if I don't try playing a bass fast, how do I find out if I can play it fast? As I believe Chuck Rainey said, you don't want the instrument to hinder your expression. Therefore you have to see what you can do on it. When I'm trying an instrument I want to see how little it limits my expression, not whether I can play a blues in A; being able to play it with as little hindrance as possible is very important to me. One other thing, people always seem to assume that people playing fast in shops (slapping or otherwise) are showing off/attempting to show off. Why? I'm usually in my own little world (see first para), and unaware of most people around me. I know plenty of other people who are the same.
i can tell the difference in someone trying out a bass and shining his ego...
It's the MacDonalds of bass playing. Impressive how quickly it fills you up but ultimately violating.
ha ha.!!!!. love this..

trust me.. you dont need to slap in a shop at any time anywhere.unless you want actually hear what the bass sounds like slapped......do your thing and try out the bass.. i cant stand people who slap/w*** in shops.. i went into guitar guitar to try a sadowsky and the guy got it down and started doing 100 miles an hour slap before i got to play it.. total idiot.. i dont go into a guitar shop to show everyone my chops.. your buying a bass not there admiration

I just adore some of there stuff..the master Gene Perez is playing bass on these.... dont get me wrong the originals are amazing and my bread and butter but these are just groove city... damn what a rythm section!!!!!! this one is produced by MAW http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...p;v=848w__KrjRE this is a slow burner..
Oh come on! He was clearly just having some fun riffing with the drummer! Don't we all get a bit silly sometimes and just muck about? I don't think Hadrien would want that to be listened to as a finished product anyway, more it should be watched as a celebration of what improvised music is about! Fun and chops! Truckstop
thats part of his thing.. i wouldnt say hes just "having fun with the drummer".. he very often plays in this style.. yeah sure he could do anything on the bass.. but imo he does like to explore the fret board alot.. and it sometimes comes across as a bit self indulgent.. but man if you got it... ha, i wish i could muck around and get a bit silly like that though..
-
is it a show case for his chops... is it musical bass playing.. i think its both... but it does get to a point where hes just showing off and it sounds a little silly.. no doubt hes amazing on the bass.. but overall its fret w***ing... though im betting when hes not doing all that he can lay down the groove like no other.. i bet his skills pay the bills for him edit.. i was listening to it without the vid and it just sounded bad.. hes awsome no doubt but he just sounds like some idiot on his own personal journey through some free jazz mind trip..... sorry..
