If you could wind back the clock and....
Twigman replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
Tell me about it!!! I made a Warmoth PJ lined fretless a few years back.....it's been played probably for a total of about 10 minutes. I'm clearly no Jaco -

Do you never play chords* on your bass? By chords I mean notes on the D string and G string at the same time - 2 note 'chords' -

I would still have chosen bass but, having dabbled with synths and computers that might've got a look in. I had many ideas of how synths and samplers could be used but I didn't have the funds at the time to invest in all the frighteningly expensive gear that I needed - back in the early days of midi and using CV as well....many of 'my ideas' have subsequently been done - I'm pretty sure I invented psy-trance in about 1983 (in my mind)......the money required for the gear was what kept me on bass - it probably still would if I went back in time now, unless I could take a stinky poo load of cash with me. -
Why are so many metal/hard rock lyrics such merda?
Twigman replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I know I've gone way off topic and the genre but one of my favourite meaningless lyrics is Numbers by Kraftwerk: Eins, zwei, drei, vier Fünf, sechs, sieben, acht Uno, dos Três, quatro One, two Ichi, ni, san, shi Adjin, dva, tri Li, tva, tri -

Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge Smiths fan - I'm not so keen on Mr Morrissey, the man, he's a silly billy but I did enjoy a Smiths lyric: His take on first love is great too: It's time the tale were told Of how you took a child And you made him old You made him old Reel around the fountain Slap me on the patio I'll take it now Oh Fifteen minutes with you Well, I wouldn't say no Oh, people said that you were virtually dead And they were so wrong Reel Around The Fountain - 1984 -

Whereas Mr Steven Patrick Morrissey was, I'm sure, 100% genuine in his : I go and I stand on my own, and I leave on my own, and I go home and I cry and I want to die - How Soon Is Now? 1984 The Smiths -

I thought that was more Shoegaze territory -

I know we don't fit the genre but on the topic of 'meaningless' lyrics let me present to you verse 1 and 2 of the SL&G song Close to the Sea - see if you can work out what inspired the lyric: Pinned to a day Striped like a cage Suits you in grey Made to withstand Too many plans Measured in sand -

If I worked in the benefits office I’d do too many drugs too sounds like an English Zappa crossed with 70s children’s TV themes to me

Thought I’d add another one - this song always leaves me feeling a little exposed and that it will all fall apart any second - I love playing it though. This rendition in a converted barn on an old dairy farm in the plains of Emilia Romagna Italy earlier this year....I give you 3 Lines

Do you consider reading music important?
Twigman replied to greghagger's topic in Theory and Technique
It may be a worthy skill but I'm convinced it would be of little value in my band. We communicate ideas by playing them to each other, yes we'll tell each other what key something might be in or as is more likely they'll ask me as they won't know (even their own ideas)......the conventions of music theory are not at the forefront of our minds, the overall aural effect is.- 115 replies

We don't do covers - none of the bands I've ever been in have been covers bands.- 115 replies

The total opposite of what it is to play in my band (or most [edit:originals] bands IME) - nothing is ever written down - everything is performed from memory (with improvisation if someone goes off track)....totally different ball game.- 115 replies

I apologise if this has been posted elsewhere but I know many of you lust after Wal mk1 It seems Bass Direct has one with both fretted and fretless necks for sale at the moment. You'll need to sell the car or extend the mortgage though.... http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Wal_MKI_Fretless_1988.html?fbclid=IwAR0rJMzDZ8qn4yDHABKFYFCXKdK6lQXl1Ux5NQ3stLH-FGAv8L5vhWrdj3w

Ah but we must try to think what Mr Tracy would do.......

All the bass on our last album was recorded in one of 2 ways depending on whether I was tracking at my place or Tony's: 1) My Bass>Yamaha 82 mixer> RME HDSP9632 > PC running Sonar Platinum 2) My Bass>UA Apollo > MacbookPro running Logic We recorded everything at 96k/32bit and moved wav stems or aiff stems between software no problem. It seemed to work out fine. We mic'd nothing but did model some mic sims in the mix. - That said I am receiving PRESSURE to migrate my home studio to MacbookPro/Logic/UA....but budget constraints'n'all that.......

I don't have one, hence the talk of batteries. I do however have a 35 year old JV-62 P - but it never gets played these days
-
I ALWAYS have the DI on post and ALWAYS press the Mute button on my amp at the end of soundcheck and have not yet forgotten to un-Mute it before the start of the set - it's the last thing I press before playing and the first thing I press before going off stage - that way any plugging and unplugging of cables won't get pops and bangs won't get to the speakers. I also currently drape the bass end of the cable over the stand....i was just concerned about if I could get away with not unplugging the bass end as it would give me one less thing to remember when I get out on stage.

On this subject, does anyone know how long a 9V battery lasts when left in a plugged in EBMM 3band bass? I ask because often we leave our instruments on stage between the sound check and the show. The soundcheck might be at 3pm and the show not start til 11pm or later. A couple of times I've almost forgotten to unplug the bass at the end of the soundcheck and i'm wondering if I ever forget, whether I will be facing disaster?
