Would be up my avenue were the colours a bit more exiting. The gloss finishes are sky blue and 'Russian army green' which are not really me. I also have an irrational hatred of satin finishes with visible grain.

TBH all the BB finishes are a bit dull. Bring back metallics ! I'd take orange or pewter any day.

Both very well made instruments that will sound great, but also very different. For me: Yamaha - great passive sound, more 'Fendery'. P/J combined does not sound like a Jazz for me (734A). Neck profile will be moderately sized. G&L - bright, punchy and a bit more 'Musicman' in presence, but won't sound like a Stingray. Neck profile is chonky. More controls but that doesn't mean massively different sounds. Personally i'd get on with both of them, but for what you described i'd go with the Yamaha.

I'm considering a Nordstrand NJ4 in my Yamaha BB734A. P pickup is flawless but the bridge just needs a bit more oomph.

Ordered a b-stock bass from their eBay account on a Saturday, received it Monday - can't really ask for more there. Some stick is definitely in the UK, if in doubt - just call them.

It's a bit like a tractor having more horsepower than an F1 car. It's what happens to that power that is more important than how much is there.

I didn't say it was a commission sale, but a fair few on their will be. I've put about a dozen through there over the years and always get a better price after commission than selling privately, plus no hassle posting.

They've had more than this thread about similar issues and I know they moderately often rush ads online and reuse previous descriptions without proper edits. The owner knows how he's doing business and I've definitely had disagreements with him over things in the past, but I'll keep going there as overall, they have the best stuff out there. And it's just down the road 🤣

Don't forget BassDirect sell many instruments as commission sales. As such they don't set the price (the owner does) and they'd have to seek their permission for any discounts.

I use a moderately sized clean paint brush, brisk movements off the side. Works well in pickup cavities and bridges too.

Yeah I had one, was modded with a double J pickup at bridge. Heavy, not best parts but totally useable.

I just bought a damaged B-Stock 6 string from Gear4Music on eBay, broken nut and 'knobs scoring marks in lacquer' that you can only see if you take them off, that was apparently enough for it to be sold for £110 instead of £429. It arrived today, I glued the nut back together and sorted the truss rod out (back bow). It is now utterly fine and i'm sat here wondering why G4M couldn't do that 10 min job and sell it for £275 or something. I intended to make a new nut etc but just wasn't necessary. So yeah here you go a 6 string fanned fret bass, new for £110 that is absolutely fine. I think someone at G4M has sausage fingers.

Had it a week, so far so good.

I'd have the MM a bit higher than they did, with the bottom coil in the J position. The gap they have between the lugs bothers me though, not sure if that can be avoided however.

I really like this idea. If that MM can be coil tapped as well, even better.
