1. At the same time, I don't think anyone is comparing the quality of Fenders to ACGs or Foderas, but they are generally good-quality very playable instruments, designed to be easily maintained and last for a long time. All of the above is good enough for me, but I suppose it depends on your definition of quality.
2.
You haven't done your research.
I think Johnny has probably done more than most. From what I've read (and that's a lot), Leo was very hands-on when it came to QC, and the workforce were very skilled and loyal.
3. This thread TOTALLY reminds me of a man dressed up in a Nemo costume:
4. *pssst* http://basschat.co.uk/topic/183234-rule-changes-to-marketplace-36-hour-bumping-rule-and-trade-valuations/
5.
I'm sorry, but I don't get it. I can understand wanting to make the finish look vintage and look the part from the casual viewer's eye, but why go so far as to fake the date stamps?
I don't get it either... faking details that are usually out of sight is a few steps too far IMO. But, each to their own. Rick - apologies if I'm mistaken, but I seem to recall that you've advertised a detailed (and lovely) fake relic on BC before, clearly described as a fake - but with no markings on the instrument to make it clear. I remember raising an eyebrow at the time - sorry if I'm wrong.
6.
Vintage stuff still appreciates though. I bought my '58 gold guard P, from a very famous denmark street dealer (The good one), in 2003, and its advertised price was £2500, i traded another vintage bass for it, but that was the price, the full on, ticket price in the most expensive vintage guitar street in the UK, and it was £2500!, i remember it was the going rate at the time, and i had it, because it was the first one i'd ever seen for sale in the UK, since I'd started collecting, so snapped it up. Its now worth upwards of 3x that. A boutique bass bought in 2003 certainly wouldnt be. My point is, they climb steadily, you dont have to wait yonks, obviosuly the longer you wait, the more it would appreciate, but 5 years would see you make money for sure, and have had 5 years owning and playing a great bass. certainly better than money in the bank at 0% interest, and what fun is that.
I generally agree - you're certainly unlikely to lose money in a five-year period. But to be sure of a return you're going to need to wait a while longer - the market is a bit wobbly and might get worse.
7. I think the days of snaffling pre-1975 bargains are over. I did OK with my current crop, and past purchases, as I bought them at very reasonable prices. We've seen the prices of early 80's buyout-era basses rise a fair bit... my guess is the longhorns will be the next to bump up a bit. That said, vintage stuff holds its' value better then most band-new basses. New car syndrome, innit. If you want to buy a bass as an investment, be prepared to hang on to it for a VERY long time.
8. Joking aside, I love this thread - I just wish I wasn't so skint at the moment. Have a bump on me.
9. Awesome. How can stuff like this be left to fester in an archive somewhere? Criminal. Anyway - this is proper prog. Atmosphere, emotion, clever... The current 'Clever-for-the-sake-of-it' Prog by numbers (Dream Theatre etc.) is a different beast entirely, IMO. It's of no interest at all to me.
10. The word 'Funk' makes me sick up a little in my mouth. It just makes me think of white socks and shiny suits with pushed-up sleeves.
11. TIM!
12. Lakland flats, bought directly from Lakland, are about £22-ish including shipping. And they're fab.
13. Jeans and a gig shirt (i.e. not something i'd usually wear for every day stuff). Sometimes a suit with no tie for corporate / posh stuff.
14.
Ahh yes! Classic rock band get back together for a few more shows only get criticised for doing so. Sounds about right!
You forgot to mention that was for charity. The money grabbing swines.
15. Or - an opportunity for lots of people who missed them the first time round to get see them, and a chance for the band themselves to put the demons of Live Aid and the Atlantic Records concert behind them.
16. Yay! But... despite Newcastle being the location of LZ's first-ever UK gig, they aren't showing the film anywhere near here. Boo!
17. Nice to see he's in a cantankerous mood. He's right. That genre plagarises itself left, right and centre, and has done for generations. It's nothing new. (sic) The album is great, btw.
18. Nice one! Enjoy it... I think you owe me a pint.
19. I've used the HD's predecessor, the HS, and I now own a pair of HS's - as far as I know, there's not a night-and-day difference between them. They're amazing cabs. I can do most of my gigs with the 2x10 - the 4x10 is incredibly powerful, punchy, clear - all the usual clichés.
20. Just read that the O2 reunion show is about to come out on DVD. Yahoo!
21.
This is interesting to me - in what way? Also, it was actually a random live recording of Zep in concert I was referring to originally, not one of their recorded albums - nonetheless, I'm interested in your comment re mixing as it's something I can speak with little authority about!
Was it a boot? Which one? I'm basically a fan of the 70s rhythm-section-and-up mix. Fat and warm, and everything has room to breathe. You can feel the weight behind the bass. Modern production is generally sparkly and clear, but dense and woefully undynamic. Look at recent Rush stuff, for example. Someone recently pointed me at a new record by... Porcupine Tree, was it? Not a fan of the music, but the sound was incredible. The guy that produced that also did the new Ian Anderson CD and it's equally involving. All IMO, of course.
22.
Not forgetting the fretless P-bass on Bron-Y-Aur stomp. So sexy!
That was an electric upright - he used the fretless P on In My Time Of Dying...
23. Loads of times - it'll be fine. He may well have a slightly different internal clock to your regular drummer - you'll adapt quick enough.
24.
There's nothing amazing about his tone at all. It's just bass-heavy. You can get that sound from virtually any bass through any amp with any kind of strings.
I kind-of agree. It's a great tone, but there's nothing mystical about it. It's great because of the production - records aren't mixed like this any more.
