Its hard to think of a better one. Rare that musicians achieve Critical and Popular success too---Nile's played on over £10bn dollars worth of music, if that documentary was accurate

Mixer / powered monitor recommendations
uncle psychosis replied to niceguyhomer's topic in Accessories and Misc
This thread is also relevant to my interests. My current mixers preamps seem to overload when I put my bass through it -
'why are all the things I want too far away?'
I agree with you on the rest but thats not a terrible comment. There have been two or three things I would have bought had the seller been prepared to post them.

Heads up:- Nile Rodgers: The Hitmaker BBC4, good friday
uncle psychosis replied to Stu-khag's topic in General Discussion
If you haven't done so already, buy Nile's autobiography. The documentary missed out a lot of the *really* interesting bits. Really enjoyed it, got it recorded and will probably watch it again this week! -
I'll start. Yammy BB414 with custom ebony fretless board (this in an undisguised excuse to show off Mr.Orange !)
So much hotness.

Heads up:- Nile Rodgers: The Hitmaker BBC4, good friday
uncle psychosis replied to Stu-khag's topic in General Discussion
Nile Rodgers is one of my all-time heroes, and I say that even as someone that doesn't actually like all of his music. On my Virgin box the tagline for the documentary is "Nile Rodgers was raised by heroin addicts and has sold 100 million records". Truly staggering. -
Sell my Thumb? Or keep it and get a 6?
uncle psychosis replied to Chris2112's topic in General Discussion
Personally, selling a bass that you really, really like just to get a bass that you may like seems a bit silly. Given that its also a terrible time for selling stuff I would hold onto it and save up for a 6 string. Once you have the 6 you can decide what to do with the 5. -
I had the Mooer and didn't like it (didn't try it on bass). The shimmer effect is a 5th, not an octave, which makes it sound a bit different to other shimmers. I really, really, really want a BlueSky or Hardwire Supernatural but I wouldn't do anything with them other than put them on shimmer mode and go "ooooh, pretty...."

Why are you frustrated as a bassist?
uncle psychosis replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I get frustrated because I don't have the time or the money to devote to music. I love playing with other people but just have too many other commitments that aren't going to go away. I'd love to be a full-time musician but I am realistic enough about my own abilities to know that I wouldn't be able to make a good enough living at it. -
It is NOT just about strength and repeated practice. You can get away (to an extent) with poor left hand technique on a guitar because the frets are closer together. On bass, if your technique isn't right then some of the stretches can be nigh-on impossible. The position of your left hand thumb will really make a difference, for example. I'm not saying that your technique *isn't* good---it may well be---but it might be worth making sure that it is whilst you are still new enough to the instrument to change it easily (old habits die hard)! Also, if one finger per fret doesn't work for you then don't sweat it too much. Double bass players typically only use three fingers and they seem to manage ok

I realise that hosting problems are not the fault of basschat but now that lots of people are paying for basschat expectations will rise. I also realise that the subscriptions are just meant to maintain the current site, but the second people are aware that payment is involved their attitude naturally drifts towards that of "customer and supplier".
I refer to your post: 1.Been meaning to get Mr E's book for years! Glad its worth getting.
Get it. Seriously.
2.http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p016r4vs
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up!
3. Absolutely love Bill Drummonds book
Its brilliant. I almost think he's a better author than musician!

Can't see embeded photos from photobucket
uncle psychosis replied to uncle psychosis's topic in Site News
There was a reported issue with Chrome and Photobucket and the RealDownloader extension. If you type chrome://extensions into the browser you should be able to disable the RealDownloader extension. HTH
Thanks but I don't have that extension! -
The single best music bio I've read is "Things The Grandchildren Should Know" by Mark Oliver Everett ("E" from Eels). Astoundingly good. The second best music bio I've read is "Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny" by Nile Rodgers. Also astoundingly good. Another brilliant music book which is almost a biography is 45 by Bill Drummond.

Blender pedal: is the Boss LS-2 good enough?
uncle psychosis replied to Lobster fingers's topic in Effects
There are better blenders out there than the LS-2 but they cost significantly more. Personally, I'd buy a second hand LS-2 and see if it does what you want. You'll easily sell it again if you need to. -
And finally, a previously torn and ill-repaired ligament in my left wrist means I have pain when playing anything below 3rd fret.
I would deliberately avoid playing that low, then. With a bit of creativity you can rework your basslines etc so that you don't need to play down there.
Well I'm going to go down a slightly different route. It seems pretty obvious to me that the course of action most likely to provide the best chance of not investing in another unsuitable bass would be to get the underlying health issues out of the way. Until that's sorted out I have a terrible vision of a house full of expensive discarded compromises...
I have to agree with that.
Zingzillas is on CBeebies.
Did you know the BBC is starting an adult channel? Its called CBoobies
Had no issues with putting the thumbrest on the BB. Just have to get it right first time ! No moving it later. Just for the record, I am back in the BB fold, having just bought a BB414 fretless. It will be getting a thumbrest at some point.
Did you buy the sexy orange one from the classifieds here? I was sorely tempted by that but full austerity measures are currently in effect at my house...
Unc, sorry for a hugely late response, but I added a rest inbetween the two pickups on a BB424X I had last year. It did exactly what I wanted it to. Got it from http://www.classicgu...thumb_rests.php . I havn't got a picture of the BB with one on, but I have put one on my current G&L SB2 in exactly the same place. It's only very small and subtle, but anyway. Here ......
Thanks! That looks really good. My only concern is that the BB has no pickguard to hide the scars of a botched job. Did you have any issues?
I do wonder how useful a test the plank bass above was, as it's looking at "cheap versus expensive" rather than any innate property of the wood. The density and stiffness of the bit of scrap and the alder might be fairly close to one another. If I really wanted to test whether the wood used for a solid body contributed to the tone, I would use pieces of wood which had wildly different properties - say one very soft and light wood (like poplar) and one bit of something hard and dense (like something in the rosewood family), swapping the same neck and pickups between the two. If nobody could hear a difference between those, threads like this could be put to bed.
You would also need to take the neck and pickups off one of the guitars and then reinstall them in the same guitar and make sure that no-one could hear a difference there either before repeating the whole process with the other one.

Where is the Jam? Most practice rooms have bass amps that will be more than decent for a jam, and if its a jam night they'll probably provide one.
-
As far as I'm concerned, the different woods thing is so insignificant in real world applications that I really don't give a monkey's about it. Until one can measure it in a repeatable experiment then it's a waste of time to even debate it. There are no hard facts in this, you can't even say that two pieces of wood from the same tree, never mind the same species or locality will be even similar, never mind identical.
+1. I spent about five years studying brass instrument acoustics, and a lot of brass musicians and instrument makers will swear blind that a trumpet made from brass sounds different to one made from white gold. However, even in scientifically controlled double blind tests the results are inconclusive, at best. Talented instrument makers are truly gifted individuals, but that doesn't mean you have to believe everything they tell you as gospel.
