Yeah, I saw the Blueberry on Fuzzdog and was intrigued. I wasn't sure whether it was the same as the Bjfe version or the Mad Professor one, though. Reading/listening online suggests the mad prof version is higher gain and not as subtle. I'll maybe contact the Fuzz Dog and ask! Think the Soul Food is still my favourite, just because of the clean blend.

The VT1 was on my shortlist but the size of it and the irritating power requirements put me off to be honest!

Fantastic kit, that's really well made, but the messy paint and scribbled on markings really do it a disservice IMO. I think if you order one direct from him you can ask him not to give it one of those finishes!

Normally in the band I play everything with a pick, but recently we've written some stuff which for lack of a better description is country-rock-esque and would perhaps be better served using fingers. However, if I just jump from pick to fingers without changing anything else then I find the tone a bit...muddy/muffled (??? I hate describing sounds) I guess. Any generic tips for changing from pick to fingers and vice versa? EQ changes (what?), level changes, anything really? First person to turn this into a pick vs fingers argument is waiving their right to complain should I ever meet them in person and deliver the world's most epic wedgie. You have been warned.

On some of our punkier/rockier numbers I sometimes want to add a tiny little bit of grit or grind, not overt distortion, just enough to add *something*. Using my B3 I get a sound that I like by using the Tubescreamer model, with the gain down low and the blend also low so there's only a bit of the distorted effect coming through. Will the EHX Bass Soul Food get close to this kind of sound, or should I be looking elsewhere? Its really hard to find demos of this kind of sound, 99% of youtube demos are people running way more gain than I want to. I quite like the look of the BJFE Blueberry too, but I don't like the price tag at all!

A few years ago I had some lessons from Jennifer Clark and she really helped me out. I notice her website no longer mentions tuition but if she's no longer teaching I bet she can recommend someone.

I still really fancy one of these but just can't face another jazzmaster style bridge like that. They always cause me stress and hassle. I'd want to make it hardtail I reckon.

For me things like this are filed under "lots of fun, but I can never find an actual use for them"

Kind Of Blue is one of the essential records in any genre. Jazz is such a huge genre that it's difficult to know where to begin. You could do a lot worse than getting a few compilations, working out what styles you like and then going from there.

On paper, I hate everything about that bass. Too many strings, coffee table top, single cut, weird ramp thing between the pickups... In reality, that's absolutely fantastic. Wow. Great work.

She's clearly very talented and I really like her apparent stance on celebrity but her music does nothing for me at all. Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.

Demand is low and supply is high. I don't think enough sellers have worked that out yet and are still pricing based on what it was like a few years ago when the economy was booming. I'm not convinced that those glory days are ever coming back, especially with the ever-increasing quality of budget gear. Suspect that the guys who justified owning a million instruments by saying "I can always get back what I paid for them if it comes down to it" may well be in for a nasty shock at some point.

In my experience its usually because the drummer is too loud and so the guitarist turns up so he can hear the guitar and then the bass turns up so he can hear the bass and then the drummer plays louder because everyone else has turned up and the cycle repeats. So the drummer normally initiates it, but the whole band is to blame because rather than deal with the actual problem (get the drummer to play quieter, and set your amps up to maximise the sound heard without increasing the volume) they all make it worse.
