I don't think I've ever regarded a bass as being 'the one' as much I do this, but sadly unless I raise some cash I won't have any more gas or electricity. A decade ago when I owned a Zon Sonus fretless, I could have sworn blind that it was the best fretless I could possibly own. I was wrong. I bought this about eighteen months ago from Alan on a whim and paid £1800 for it. It's a slightly unusual bass in that it has a spruce core and a spalt alder top and back - precisely to make it as lightweight as possible. It weighs 3.1kg and is without doubt not only the best fretless I've ever played, but also the lightest. It's a classic ACG in that it has a flat board, an asymmetric neck and a proper filter preamp. The pups are both singles, have balls, and the tonal range defies any other preamp I've ever used. If you want Jaco, this will do it in spades, but it also does that front pup semi-Precision, Bill Laswell thing to a tee. It is beautifully made and detailed, with matching spalt alder back, heel and headstock. The ebony board isn't far away from being a full centimetre thick, with side dots on the line positions. The action is very low and (heinous though it is to say) this is not only chock full of 'mwah', but is weirdly slappable. Will be supplied in the blue Fusion gigbag in which Alan originally delivered it to me. The bass is in pristine condition, and has only ever been noodled on in my flat. £1200 feels like a very fair offer, but I am wiling to listen to reason up to a point. Would (hugely) prefer collection, or meet in central London, but you can arrange a courier if you prefer. I'm in Kingston, in SW London. I bought one of the first of these in the UK in 1987 or so - a black one, with the EMG Select humbuckers like yours. The new price was £275. It was my standard bass for five years or so. The pickups were very powerful, and the bass (or mine at least) could take a very low action with the crazy light gauge strings that were fashionable at the time. It was basically thought of as a Status copy (for well over £1k less than the real thing). I loved owning a bass that actually had a red LED on it....

I bought this in 2003 or therabouts from Andy's in Denmark Street. It's a 1978 with a rosewood board, blocks and binding. Recently set up and truss rod replaced by Charlie Chandler in Hampton Wick. Plays like butter, and it probably the growliest Jazz I've ever owned. Don't want to sell it, but need funds for deposit on an ACG 5. The obvious question is - why the hell is it so cheap. And the answer is that the body I've used it with is a replacement. It's a light ash JB body expertly fitted by luthier Tom Anfield in 2005. I still have the original, but it is seriously, seriously heavy, and the black paint is very mangled. Everything else - right down to the pickguard - is original. I bought it with the ashtrays and may still have them (somewhere). There are no issues with it. Even the strings are pretty new. You could put the original body on it and have an original 1978 Jazz. I'd advise that you might have some back problems after a while though... All this makes a bit tricky to price, but I think £700 is very, very fair indeed. I can probably even throw in a hard case or a decent gig bag. I've tried to attach photos and hope they work (can email on request anyway). Bass is located in Kingston, Surrey. You are of course very welcome to attend my humble abode for a test drive. I would prefer collection or meet in central London. Courier is possible, but you would need to arrange and pay for that please. Payment preferably by bank transfer. Thanks,

Hmmm. A lot of people in this thread are really just saying that they only like the bass they happen to have...and, er, that seems to be partly true in my case. Anyway, after 30 years of playing, at this point, I think my favourite things are: V-shaped or asymmetric necks Graphite neck rods (huge improvement to modern US Fenders IMO) Filter preamps Jazzes. Just any playable Jazz really. Thin frets. Can't stand massive Warwick bell brass things. Straplocks Original EMGs (though unfashionable these days) Chunky new nickelwounds Thin bodies and light weights Some sort of passive master tone control, whatever the rest of the electronics Pan pots Clip-on tuners.

Aria and SGC claimed, subject to pickup. Westone remains.... Free bass! -
1. Aria SB-SLT, through neck, twin humbucker, passive, red grain, lovely. Needs new jack socket, but otherwise fine. This is a passive Korean re-issue. 2. Westone Spectrum DX. Red, battered, but fully functioning. Original electronics replaced with aftermarket active preamp. Sounds great. Matsumoku bass. 4.SGC Nanyo Bass Collection fretless. Red grain, unlined rosewood board. Very light. VGC, other than one replacement knob. ALL FREE IF YOU CAN PICK THEM UP. I'm in Kingston, SW London. First come, first served. Thanks

I'm speccing my new Krell five with Alan now and am seriously unsure as to whether or not to ask for a 20" radius fingerboard or a flat one. The flat board on my fretless ACG feels great, but the five will be fretted. I'm used to Fender boards, having played mostly Jazzes for 30 years. Any advice or experiences to share? Thanks

I was wondering who'd bought that Zawinul...

I was awakened from my slumbers this morning by a gent delivering this: http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/0220-recurve-4-fretless/ Now I have to admit that buying a bass at this level without playing it first is a risk. I've been looking for a really good fretless for a few years to replace the Zon Sonus that I should never have sold. And I'd been thinking of asking Alan to build me one - although I wasn't sure I could be patient enough, plus I was a bit worried about weight, as well as how I'd get on with the asymetric neck and zero radius board. So my SGC Bass Collection fretless had to soldier on for a while. When this bass popped up in the 'for sale' section of the ACG website, it just screamed 'buy me!'. And I did. Alan was a delight to deal with; very straightforward, and very helpfully arranged delivery on a Saturday. Whenever I buy a new bass, there are an uncomfortable few days when I need to set it up with preferred strings, lower action, etc. Straight out of its (very nice) Fusion gig bag, it was obvious that just wasn't going to be an issue with this ACG. I honestly don't need to even think about doing anything to it. It is light - 3.1kg. It's not quite as light as the Bass Collection, but feels a little more solid as a result. It looks absolutely beautiful (I'm having trouble taking my eyes off it) and the luthiering is flawless. It also has a quite distinctive smell... The flat board and asymetric neck work perfectly. My intonation seems to be a lot better than usual on it. Yes, the preamp is going to take some time to master, but the tonal palette is clearly huge, and offers things that conventional ones can't. The pickups are seriously powerful and (unless I go nuts with the preamp settings), very quiet for single coils. All in all, while buying this was an impulse, the result isn't just the best fretless I've ever played, but the best bass I've ever owned.
