1.
P/J - all pros, no cons. I'd also look at Wizards P/J sets - I've got two of the Big sets, and they're fantastic for what I'm after.
How would you describe the tone of this Thumper/84 combo? Peter
2. Rather than looking for what a J pup might add to a P (and correctly balanced it's worth it imo) there's the added versatility of switching from the P to the J, a huge plus.
3.
Having said that, I'd fit the Seymour Duncans into the bass first and see if I actually needed to make any 'tweaks' with those in place - otherwise you've no idea where you've just moved the goalposts to...
That's advice I've not always followed myself but it is very good advice
4.
I thought the bass playing was quite interesting, it's Bruno Mars that I think is dross.
Apologies, I misunderstood. Bruno Mars isn't my taste either but that baseline was nailed down
5. Jamereo Artis Regardless of whether you like his style of music or not, to say it's dross is just your opinion, many will have a different one Sound is dire but the guy isn't just a pretty face. http://youtu.be/Oqz0-IA8EAo Peter
6. Great playing but if it was done live, and with the dancing, I'd be surprised. The bassist who played that for real possibly can't dance so well or look so good?
7. Mine is my 'rat' bass to be honest. I don't love playing it but if it takes a knock I won't get too upset. It works and sounds pretty good. A black pup is needed though
8.
I'm guessing a standard pickguard needs a bit of filing to fit a Ryder P. My 2p: I'd get black pup covers and a mint/black/mint pickguard, but that's just me.
Yes it does. I'm not sure that the pup is exactly a standard P size and shape either (more filing). It'll do for now, it's not as if it's my main bass
9. I resurrected my Sue Ryder P today. I've had it a while (bought it new when they were 1st mentioned). In case you forgot (how could you), the neck was defective so I fitted a Mighty Mite Fender P clone. I also obtained a cheap pearl scratch plate and some CTS pots with a harness. I fitted the scratch plate after filing many lumps out of it and wired in the new pots and harness. While trying to fit the original Chinese push fit knob onto the volume pot I badly damaged the pot by pushing its innards right through I've have a new pot for months but the bass has just sat around needing attention. I've got an interview at a residential school for autistic teenage boys next week and playing in a band is a popular pastime. I thought that it would be good to have something I can throw about if I get a job. I wired in the new pot this morning and set the bass up. Trouble is both pots were acting as volume  I got a wiring diagram from the interweb and it was completely different to my set up so I rewired the lot. It works really well, sounds just like a P should, no longer resembles a Sue Ryder bass and it need 2 more knobs (it's already got one ). It doesn't hold up very well to close scrutiny but it'll do I'm not overly keen on the white pup but it sounds good so it'll have to do. 10.
I guess that illustrates the differences in taste we all have. I found it almost completely lacking in low-mid kick, and that's after wrestling with it for 100-or so-gigs over a year.
Low mid is where my hairs on the back of my neck start to stand up. The RH didn't do this. It sounded 'oily' if that makes ANY sense at all - lol
11. Luvverly indeed. I bought a Mk1 but not a P. I've got a Mk1 6P though. These basses are immense.
12. New BadAss's can be fairly unobtainium at the moment I believe. There's always Babicz from Bass direct. I rate the Gotoh 201 higher than a BadAss myself. Pickup 1st I'd say, then wiring & pots. Finally bridge. Peter
13. Thanks, great looking bass. My question was more through curiosity as I have too many basses and need to let at least one go myself
14. I always thought that mine sounded 'loud enough' but to my ears 'something' wasn't quite right. Maybe this explains it?
15. Is this through neck? Peter
16. Sure, the woods used and the contruction of the instrument do affect tone. If the string vibrates with altered overtones then the pickup will respond differently. But in my opinion and experience this influence is minimal. The overwhelming influence is the pickup and electrics. Witness people who've made a bass out of a lump of aluminium and guess what, it sounded just like a bass, perhaps even a little 'woody'. Peter.
17. I bought a bass from Mike. He despatched it overnight immediately he had the funds. All correspondence was a real pleasure. The Bass, it's special What more could one ask for? Peter
18. Three questions for yourself and those knowledgeable in such things. Is it compatible with the Sterling 5? (I'm thinking that the neck dimensions are the same). Are the tuners Ultralites? What is the weight of the neck vs a wooden one? Edited to add - it won't fit. 5 vs 6 bolt fixing Peter
19. I'm lucky enough to own a Marleaux and this one is also stunning. I think they all are
20. Bass of the day for me was probably the Moth. If it were fretted I'd be pleading with Alan to let me have it (yes I know there's a queue Dave ). Did anyone actually get around to counting how many ACG's had 'come home'? I wonder what Alan feels like when confronted with all his history? Peter
21. Well, having gone up a day early to miss the snow and stayed on a day for the same reason I'm finally home. It was a little dicey in the final couple of miles as I thought it may be but the thaw was on and I made it. Best ever no doubt! The friendly atmosphere was a credit to all. My non bass friends who were staying in the hotel over the road came along for an hour and were bemused, amused and enchanted at the same time by this odd gathering. What with looking after them, listening to the band and being terrified as my Basseokey spot neared my camera was severely neglected but I'll check out the results. Thanks go to everyone who was there and took part in some great bassy banter. Especial thanks go to Alan, Dave, Shaun and the band and especially Lihnnie for those great cakes Peter
22. I was loaned this bass for a couple of weeks. It's that good that it made me a 5 string player
23. That looks like a whole lot of fun. Congratulations Peter
24. I would suggest you include EAD cabs in your list. I'm biased as Dave is a friend but I don't think you'll find a better 3 way 2 x 12. If you're near to Chorley you could check em out too. http://www.extendedaudiodesign.co.uk/ Peter
25. I bought a replacement Skyline neck from Lakland in the States and it was less than that.
